28mm on an h1 or h2
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:56:48 pm »

I know the Hasselblad software automatically corrects distortion w/ the 28 used on an H3D. But can I auto focus and shoot with the lens normally (auto aperture) on an H1 or 2 (knowing the corners will fall off at full frame as well)? The 35mm doesn't focus close enough for my purposes and a diopter defeats the optics of such a high end system.
Thanks for your answers so far...

No, it will not work; you will get a Lens Not Compatible error message on the grip display.

Kind regards,

Yes, it works perfectly on an H2F. I rented one for an architectural shoot. The results were terrific.

Does this mean, I would be able to use the HC 28mm on a H2F body with a Leaf Aptus digital back (with a sync cord)?

No. The H2F is a closed system. You can use the Hasselblad CF backs with it.

strange - my hasselblad dealer offered me the H2F for use with my leaf back... what else should not work, when syncing with a cord and powering tethered or battery?

The 28mm HCD is dedicated to the H2F with Hasselblad CF digital magazine, H2D, H3D and H3DII.
On an H1 or H2 you will receive the message "Lens Not Compatible"
H2F with a HM 16-32 film magazine you will also receive the message "Lens Not Compatible".

A third party digital back on an H2F will deliver the message "Module not compatible"

Thats the idea to lock user like me with a leaf back out. They want us to buy only there camera, lens and back.  Its a very sad business model but I guess it works for them. This is the same company that comes out with a new $7000 lens that does not even take advantage of there own new full size sensor?

Actually I don't know what to do , i got this proposition from PhaseOne in Germany >>
you will get a new PhaseOne Camera 645 AFD and P45+ with two new digital lenses  D AF 2,8 / 45mm  and D AF  4,5 / 75 – 150 mm  in exchange  Habla H1, 80mm, 35mm, 210mm and P45 for 10.000 euros without VAT
with a new H3 I 'll buy : a new H3 , the new 35-90mm ,the Tilt/Shift system  = about 10.000 euros for Hasselblad

a H3D is nothing for me as it is actually,  a new H3 will keep the old customers and some day I'll change for a H4D or a H5D, if I go to Mamiya or Leica S2  , I'll never come back to Hasselblad

I remember reading somewhere that the current firmware upgrade for the H2 adds compatibility for the 28mm lense.

Not the H2, John, just the H2F, which only works with Hasselblad digital backs.

If you like the idea of a 28mm lens, actually if you like the idea of a 28mm lens which can be used with a full frame 645 sensor (or film!), consider the Phase One Camera System. We're working very closely with Mamiya on continued development of this system, and I believe a more and more compelling argument is being made for it. A vertical grip is on the way as well as Leaf Shutter lenses and umm, some other things.

Heck, you don't even have to put a Phase One back on it, you can use Hasselblad or Leaf or Sinar or....

But you might seriously consider putting the Phase One DB on it.

I spoke with Victor at Hasselblad and he assures me that the 28  works with the H2D with the latest firmware.

That could be. Although that still restricts use of that lens to Hasselblad digital users since the H2D is mated to a Hasselblad digital back only - no other digital back or film back will work.

As far as I know the 28mm does not work with the H2 camera. Paul Claesson, please correct me if I'm incorrect.

I've got a H3D and a 28mm. What I want to know is will the lens and back work on a H2. I want a film back and a backup body and I'm being offered a deal on a used H2 kit. Will it work with a firmware upgrade? Will the 28mm work on the body with the digital back installed? lastly can I still shoot film after a firmware upgrade.

Thanks, Franc

get a hardware upgrade to a H2f and the lens will work with CF backs, the lenscirkel and corrections do not allow use with a film back.

The 28mm will not work with a film back on an H2.
