For a cheap, hand-held, and stupid-looking solution, I was thinking of attaching the camera to a monopod, attaching some weights at the bottom of the monopod, and control the camera by gripping the pod with the right hand, and of course, focusing/controlling aperture with left hand. This is similar to what people did to make their own homemade steadicams to use with small camcorders.
I do have a real steadicam (the ones for small camcorders) that I think should work perfectly with a DSLR and any lens that doesn't stick out too much.
