The new D60 body looks like a tarted up D40x. Not entirely certain what is different about it. Must be cost reduced or something.

According to the Nikon Press release this is the first of three new perspective control lens that they are introducing this year. Specs look very good the price $1,924 seems a little high but this is a very specialized lens.

T/S lenses are finally becoming a credible option on DSLR thanks to live view.

Nikon has been doing a good jod a closing the gap with Canon these past 6 months, give us a few fast primes and things will become really interesting...

Assuming Nikon will be releasing a 24MP body by the Photokina, the 24 mm shifted 10 mm both ways will enable to do a 2 images flat stitch that will be 36x44 mm at about 40 MP. I could see myself using this on a regular basis.

Yes, I thnk that Nikon has done some serious soul searching and looked at their gaps in their line-up.. They have plugged some serious holes between last year and PMA now. VR for Telephotos, a FF camera, and now T/S lenses.

They want their nr 1 spot, and at this rate they are almost sure to re-gain it. It feels like a "shock and awe" campaign! :-) Poor Canon.. they must wake up sometime soon.. Nikon has taken the game to them BIG TIME.. Unfortunately I fear that Canon's reaction time is long.. and that they are more likely to stick to their planned strategy instead of revolutionizing their camera business.. or even keeping up the pace of innovation and upgrading of their lens and camera lineup.
That's the problem when you make photocopiers and printers and industrial products.. you can't keep focus (pun intended!). Still, I think there WILL be a reaction..sometime..
.. just not too soon!

In the mean time congrats to Nikon.. they are really shaping up!

Just tested the Canon 1Ds Mark III and while the camera itself can make very good high resolution pictures, the Canon lens lineup in the Wide Angle sucks a lot. The new expensive 14 mm L II is okay, the 17-40 a pain to use and even the 24-70 has some nasty problems in the corners. The 24 TSE I had to send back (tested on the 5D) because the picture quality was a bad joke. Many of these lenses are old designs of the film age, they where very good with film, some are still very good in the digital age (mainly the Tele). For me the conclusion was either stay with my Canon Equipment (5D and 40 D) or if I want to go the high resolution route I have to change to Nikon, as the Canon lenses are not worth the investment. I know that Nikon lenses are usable on Canon via adapter but that does not make much sense in the long run. Nikon is really starting the digital age of photography new and seems to do it with the most important thing: with lenses that are capable to fulfill the demands of high resolution full frame sensors.

It makes sense to me as I have a lot of investment in Canon already. Plus one has the option to adapt all sorts of other lenses onto the EOS platform. When doing critical work with the TS, I wouldn't mind stop down metering... though I'd prefer that Canon produce a better 24TS.

Keep in mind the sample variation with the TS 24. I have a very good one, and they do exist.

The press release indicated 2 more. What do you think they will be? A replacement for the 85 maybe and longer or somewhere in the middle?

I think I will start saving up for the 24

I agree, with LiveView critical focus is much easier to achieve and you also have the benefit of being able to preview the Tilt, zooming in to check different areas of the image. It's been surprising to me just how useful LiveView is on a DSLR.

Yeah, D3x plus the three new T/S lenses is pretty much a Nikon landscape photog's dream come true. In addition to simple 1x2 stitches, these lenses also make it possible to to 1x3 or 2x2 for even more resolution, although composing is more difficult for the 2x2 stitch.

The only downside is it's not truly "flat" stitching, because parallax can be an issue (and will be with the 24mm, I think). It would be nice if these lenses had a tripod collar/foot so we could keep the lens stationary and shift the camera.

Canon's quality control is indeed terrible, and there is a lot of sample to sample variation. The Canon 24TSE is not one of their sharpest lenses (some of their zooms do better at 24), but it is nevertheless decent, and certainly not a "joke". It had the merit to exist for more than a decade - during which time Nikon users had just a 28 shift without tilt and auto-aperture - but there is almost no doubt that a newer and more expensive Nikon will perform better.

They will be a 45 f2.8 T/S and a new 85 f2.8 T/S that does indeed appear to be a replacement for the current 85 mm T/S.

Just use a RRS L bracket and shift the camera the same distance you shifted the lens, but opposite direction. If you are accurate enough, you'll get true flat stitching in a matter of seconds.

I used to do this from time to time with an old 28 mm shift lens on my D2x.

T/S lenses are "finally becoming credible"? What do you mean by that? They have been in use by many pros for years. I don't think the digital era has anything to do with their credibility. Perhaps you mean that they are easier to use with digital due to the instant feedback.

As for a 24MP Nikon, I personally doubt it. The photosites would be very small indeed, probably smaller than the 40D and besides, I think Nikon with the D3 and Canon with the 5D have proven that 20+ MP only gives you an incremental improvement in IQ over a 12 MP sensor. Personally, I just added a 1Ds Mark III to my camera stable but I would hesitate to say it is a huge step up from the 16MP in the 1Ds II.

Not to start the whole debate about four-thirds again, but I wonder whether Olympus will be left behind here, at very least in pixel count. Will they ever produce a 20+ MP dSLR? For that matter, since there are new Canon XSi and Nikon D60 bodies recently released, will there be a new E-510 replacement, or perhaps something between the E-3 and E-510?? Thoughts?

Agree with you about T/S lenses. As a 4x5 shooter, I am really excited by announcements. For the first time I can see retiring the Technika.
