I find it fascinating that you chose to criticise me for my reply when others responded to comments regarding their images in this thread and you had nothing to say to them.

I like the 2:1 finally. I agree about the mist. I wish I could see a 1:1 print. The scale here makes it difficult to actually appreciate how immense the mountains are, and the car looks pretty small. I like the photo more all the time.

Collum, I like the pictures taken in Egypt - where were you precisely? (bit of an Egyptophyle here).

Darn it!  I was able to see my post from my computer at home and now they are red x's. I am still able to see sfbay 420 posts and evryone elses. Any suggestions? The size of my photos went from 640x512 to 28x30 all by themselves. Any web gurus out there who have any ideas why?
It could be that your office firewall is blocking outgoing traffic to certain web sites and/or access on various ports. I know that with some of the people I deal with they are unable to access the Pbase website as it is blocked by the company's firewall - there is a list which is updated with non business friendly websites which companies download onto their firewalls to prevent employees wasting company time on personal web browsing; this maybe what is causing you some difficulties.

As to the ports issue, I had the problem with JW's site that he uses Port 81 for his personal images - however, I have my firewall setup to block all outgoing traffic except port 80 (temporarily relaxing this rule allowed me to view his images).

Thanks for the comments guys! No I did not use any of the artistic Photoshop filtes because I find them very destructive to the images. Besides they are used a lot!! I used a program called Painter by Corel. I t is very robust but it is not as intuitive as Photoshop; that is why I did all my levels and final printing out of PS. I have Painter 8 but Painter 9 is out and I hear is wonderful! I printed this image in watercolor paper and you could see the brush strokes quite clearly.

Thanks gain,

Andres

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and have been really impressed with some of the work I've seen.  I'd like to add a few of my own from a recent vacation trip to Ireland.

Just as an aside, this is why it is better if the photographer does not reply to comments.  Someone should be free to say an image is ugly (better to say why than to just make a statement) without getting an explanation of why their opinion isn't correct.  The critic may need an eye exam, a new monitor (or the current one calibrated), but a critique of another's image isn't the time for that.

The object of a critique isn't to show the rest of us how good we are.  That is what galary shows are for.  Critiques are for learning from our failures and successes.

I also find it interesting that when the critic says something to the effect that the image is beautiful, there usually isn't a rebuttal for explanation of the image or type of monitor used or the latest eye exam results.

Thank you. I have a 40x20 inch print sitting next to me, and I'm going to go have it mounted shortly.

I also like the second Egypt photo. Where was it taken?

Thanks, that would make sense, I am able to see my posts from my house. I was wondering how many more people are seeing red x's with my posts?

Andreas,
If you did use an effect around the lady in the photo - you did a great job - it turned out well.

That shot of the window out to the garden was good to.

This isn't a juried show or a class assignment, so I see no reason to artificially limit discussion. This is a discussion forum, after all...

Jonathan, nice conversion to a more web-friendly image - I think we can now get an excellent glimpse at the ethereal spirit you captured - very nice indeed!

Finally got to see your pic - I quite like this, however, IMHO there needs to be more contrast in the mountains to really bring out the texture. As it stands at the moment they are getting lost at the back of the picture which gives it an overall 'soft' feel.

I did a quicky on it (for fun) using the shadow/highlight then curves to give an idea of what I would try and aim for...obviously you may have a different idea of what works and doesn't.

ciao ciao

Andres! Now I see - I thought that the lady in the market was just beautiful - first the photograph and then the watercolour effect applied. I'm not surprised to see that it is Corel Painter. It's a superlative program. Love it. Wish I owned it.
