Bypass Color Management
« on: September 10, 2025, 05:21:30 pm »

How and where do I bypass color management on my EPSON P700? All I see are Printer manages color or photoshop manages color. I'm trying to profile my paper using calibrite and it says to bypass color management.

What kind of computer are you using? Windows? Mac? Linux?

this is the relevant part of Andrew's link:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/no-color-management-option-missing.html

obv they're not using linux since they're using photoshop...  but long story short, you can't print without color management from photoshop directly.

I also like "print tool" from the QTR creators, it's mac only, but it also allows bypassing color management:  https://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRprinttool.html

Or you could use both Printer Manages Color (in Photoshop) AND Color Management Off (in printer driver) simultaneously - the so called pseudo null transform technique.  There are some threads on the subject somewhere here.

Not with modern versions of Photoshop. Don't even try.
There are other means to do this rarely needed print path.

It's been a while so I will defer to you.

On the other hand, why does the OP need the color management bypass in Photoshop if using the Calibrite software which I presume is similar to my ColorMunki Photo or i1Studio which does not need to use Photoshop but prints the target from the software itself allowing one to choose Color Management Off in the printer driver.  Little confusing what the problem is here.

ColorMunki Photo is no longer able to print with colour management turned off.

ColorMunki Photo is no longer able to print with colour management turned off.

CoorMunki does not use Photoshop at all so where is the need for turning color management off.  It sends the color patches as is without any color profiling.  It opens the printer driver directly where it is recommended that all parameters are selected as you would when printing the actual image including Mode, i.e. Off (No Color Management) option.  After profiling process, print from Photoshop selecting Photoshop Manages Color and the newly generated paper profile while leaving the printer parameters exactly as they were during creation of the profile.

That's how I do it on for my P400 anyhow.

I assume you are using Windows.  The issue is with the Mac OS which enforces colour management.  The last time I made some profiles I was advised by Calibrite to use the Adobe Color Print Utility (ACPU) since the ColorMunki application could no longer by-pass the Mac OS attempting to enforce some kind of colour management.  Certainly, the profiles produced printing directly from the Calibrate application were unusable.  In fact, the ColorMunki application now contains instructions on how to export the pages of colour patches and import them into ACPU.

There are other applications which can be used on the Mac.  The ColorSync Utility allows printing without colour management.  If you have a Canon printer their 'Canon Professional Print & Layout' (not available for all Canon printers) will allow printing of colour patches without colour management.  Does Epson have a similar utility I wonder ?

A warning though, if you are printing from Sonoma or Sequoia printing from Lightroom or Photoshop with [Application] Manages Colour is broken.

Got it.  I know nothing about Macs - not since my Mac Plus I had in College.... :))

Thanks for calrification.  OP never specified so I automatically assumed PC.

Thank you.

Andrew, you seem to be in a better position with Epson than me with my Canon printer.

I have done some extensive testing with both Sonoma and Sequoia and it is not possible to select the radio buttons “ColorSync” or “Canon Color Matching” as they are greyed-out when ‘[Application] Manages Colour’ is selected.  I have tried every possible option with the correct profile and every print is sub-optimal or unusable.  I can check this against reference prints produced concurrently on another Mac which has Monterey installed and which does not have this problem.

It is possible to produce prints which match the reference ones by using Canon’s ‘Canon Professional Print & Layout’ which bypasses all the Mac OS printing dialogues and, I assume, connects directly with the printer.

Canon’s professional printer technical support in the UK have looked into this issue in depth and, having confirmed and enlarged on my findings, reported it to Canon in Japan.  Canon Japan’s reply is that this is a bug/fault produced by Apple and it is for them to rectify.

This is as much as I know so far and I am sharing it so that others may also be aware of the issues.

In case of Canon I'm always printing targets (and anything else) from Canon Professional Print & Layout or Mirage Print software, both bypassing driver and ColorSync issues flawlessly.

Canon is passing the buck. Its their bug if they can't behave like Epson with these grayed out radio buttons.
Some software products use a private (undocumented) SPI called kPMApplicationColorMatching, which you see in Photoshop, Lightroom, Adobe Color Print Utility, the ColorSync Utility, etc. When you set Application Manages Color, the area of the driver that controls Colorsync will alter the radio buttons so they are grayed out. X-Rite’s i1Profiler and a few other software products have also implemented this SPI.They work as well.

are you not able to use the canon professional print and layout software?  if not, im telling you, check out print-tool, you can use it for 30 days even just to print your targets:  https://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRprinttool.html

I am using Canon’s software. It would not be my first choice but at least it works.
