Can't import from iPhone
« on: November 26, 2024, 09:46:54 am »

Suddenly, from a week or so ago.

LR Classic (on Mac) has initially very hard time displaying previews from iPhone, some are displayed randomly, others grayed out...

Selecting one or several, the result is the same: the import progress bar appears (but doesn't move) and the central part displays "Importing photos" message... but nothing happens. It stays like that frozen for many minutes, until I manually cancel the import.

iMac OS: Sequoia 15.1.1

iPhone OS: 18.1.1

It hapens on Windows too. I cannot tell if it was the IOS upgrade or LR upgrade, but shomething is wrong. I tried resetting the location & privacy settings on the iphone to factory default and it started working, but not issue free. The annoying part was then customize the permissions for every app.

Also, make sure that itunes is not running (if you have it)

Try importing and selecting unmodified, especially if you are shooting RAWS,  I export from the photos app using unmodified and that preserves the whole file in RAW format.  I import into a folder and put to with all my other older where my lightroom files are stored and then import into LR.  Works like a charm.

If you are having problems it could also be that your images are going to the cloud and when you export them they need to come done form the cloud and thus if you are doing it over cellular or a poor wifi connection you may get faulty transfers.

I gave up trying to transfer from iPhone to computer via cable. As I seldom shoot many pix at a time, I ended up simply emailing them to myself and putting them into Photoshop that way. I keep them full-size and do not upload to any cloud.

Another problem doing it by cable was this: I was prevented from saving the images in the folders I wanted to use.

Too much “smart ass” in this world. Nobody is going to look back fondly and think of this era as any kind of golden age.

I managed to dowload all the pictures with some hicups. After that, I deleted all the pictures from the iphone, and now it works without issues for new images.

This worked for me as I don't keep the photos on the iphone, but may not be the solution for someone keeping image collections on their device.

Guys, thanks for the suggestions so far.

The most frustrating part is that it sometimes works, but most of the time doesn't. The other day I normally imported several shots from iPhone without issues. Then, today, Lightroom doesn't even want to display thumbnail images, let alone import a single image. Then it crashes at quitting LR. After which, I need to Force Quit it.

I even uninstalled it and installed it again. No luck.

I just tried. what I did was to select a number of photos shot in HEIC format on the iPhone and send it to my MBP via airdrop. Then I imported the photos into LRC and it worked as it should. I have done the same a number of times but not very recently. Maybe a cojple of months ago and also then no problems. I always do it this way.

I'm simply using AirDrop to import then ingest with Photo Mechanic and now via Bridge.

My older Photo Mechanic doesn't support the newer HEIC format of the iPhone 15 until I purchase a pricy update or go to the bricking subscription model.

However in the past couple of years, I'm only able to import 150 or fewer photos using AirDrop, at least on OS 14.x.

I used to be able to AirDrop 400-500 photos at a time and now sometimes it stalls at 150 or fewer images.

The only fast workaround seems to be by selection fewer images to import per batch. However, they all end up in the Downloads folder so make sure things are cleared out!

I'm not using LR to ingest my work so this could be a system-wide problem not necessarily related to LR.

Thanks, Hans (and Larry). I am sure there are various workarounds, but I am still perplexed why I need a workaround when it used to be working perfectly fine in the past, i.e., a direct import from iPhone to LR.

(I'm still on Sonoma 14.5, LrClassic 14.1.1, iPhone 15 Pro 18.1.1)
but
Can you see your iPhone in the Mac Finder either on wi-fi or connected via usb-c ??

If you can't then the issue is either with yr wi-fi connection or the usb-c cable.
Ideally it's safest to use an apple usb-c cable (many cables are so-called 'charging cables' not suited for data transfer).

I've double checked, no problem importing ...

I am connected via a usb-c cable, can see the content of the iPhone photos, it displays even file names, but everything is gray or only a few images show... even if all images are shown, and one or a few selected for import.. it doesn't import, but stalls the process.

1/ ok, but can you see the iphone in the left hand bar on the macos Finder, not just on Lr ?
2/ Is Lr sync turned off (shot in the dark, but could possibly interfere)
3/ Have you tried changing the usb-c cable ?
4/ Can you download images using the built-in Image Downloader in MacOS ?

I can’t compare directly because I'm still using previous generation macos, but did have issues until I paused all cloud syncing.

Trouble shooting is a PITA, If none of the above solve the issue AND you can download images to another similar computer with current MacOS, it may need a clean Lr re-install.

One more thought, Slobodan...

I've had issues also between older iPhone and iOS/newer Mac/MacOS and newer iPhone+iOS and older version of MacOS.

Sometimes being out of sync by a version or two creates havoc between the iPhone and Mac; sometimes it's the newer hardware on one vs. older on the other that's a problem, especially different versions of Bluetooth and Wifi.

I could never get my iPhone to transfer to my old MacPro since the wifi hardware was much older than the phone and the software couldn't be updated on the MacPro.

Things seem to work much better between iOS 18.x and MacOS 15.x. It's when there's a version or two difference that some of the syncing problems crop up.

I have just airdropped RAW images from my iPhone 12pro (iOS 18.3) to my M1 iMac (Sonoma 14.7.3).  They appeared highlighted in the Downloads folder and I copied and pasted them to my Pictures RAW folder and imported into LR Classic (14.1.1).  There were no problems at all.
