X2D Hassie - mounting Canon TS-E lens adapter?
« on: September 19, 2024, 12:54:18 pm »

Would anyone happen to know what is working to accomplish Canon 24mm Tilt Shift on Hassie X2D?

Thanks,
Jack

Not sure what you mean. If you mean the physical adaptor itself then there are probably lots of them. I know of at least the Kipon and Techart ones. If you mean what effect it has then I suggest that you read Limitations of Electronic Shutter in the User Guide.

I understand E-Shutter issues, I'm seeking feedback from someone who has found AND successfully used one, ignoring the issue of E-Shutter.  I only do landscape work and never had a problem with E-Shutter when I had to use it.

Well as a 24mm lens it works fine. I use the TSE 24 with the Kipon adaptor.
You won't get much tilt/shift though.

Could you define just how much tilt and shift you are able to get out of the 24?

Are any of the other Canon TS-E, or even the Nikon lenses a better mate to the X2D?

Shift in particular is important for my work.

Image circle for that lens, from what i can find, is 67.2 mm and designed for 24x36 sensor (43mm diag).
diagonal for that X2D sensor (32.9x43.8 X2D spec sheet) should be about 54.78 mm
So it seems to just cover the sensor with about  6mm +/- cumulative movement on the diagonal.

you could cut out a 67 mm circle from wax paper and move it over a drawn box of the sensor to see how much shift is possible.

Vignetting may be an additional issue.

Thanks for the clarification.
Just looking for a free lunch!  LOL

Love the X2D, gets me back to the LUT I loved from Hassie prior H cameras I owned.
(went from H5D 60 to GFX, but just never as happy with the GFX for my work)

Hmmm, only "real" solution is put the X2D on the back of something like a Cambo with TS and a lens that gives me sensor coverage to mate to the X2D.  More gear to buy and haul around - not fun at 78 years!

The X2D is of course, not a back, it is a complete camera. So it is not designed for a Cambo as the sensor is further back. Also you will not be able to get anything like a wide angle lens of 24mm as the whole thing is far too long.
Best bet is to use the Hasselblad Tilt Shift Adaptor and an HC lens. Then you can do away with the electronic shutter altogether. If you don't already own the TSE24E then you probably won't pay anymore as I have seen them on eBay lately quite cheap.

Posted this back early September - only one adapter that folks have used?

My best friend has more lenses, cameras, etc than most camera stores, Clyde Butcher.
I've never been able to get him to move to Hassie, but he is now back to shooting film as a  experiment.
Got a cool camera body out of Iran!  Wizard there machaning so cool bodies.

But just finished a chat with Clyde and he say the Canon TS-E II on his GFX works just fine!

Think I am going to give it a try, again landscapes and all manual shooting logic from my old 4x5 days.

As I said, Kipon and Techart are widely used. See the Facebook forums. The question is, other than a Tilt Shift Lens, why would anyone put a non Hasselbad lens on a $10K Hasselblad?
Strangely lots do.
If you haven't already read the Limitations of Electronic Shutter in the User guide.
Basically only useful for landscapes on a tripod on a windless day.

Then again, for many users the reasons can be very not strange.

And in the case of the OP, if Hasselblad made a tilt/shift lens, perhaps it might seem less strange to use a Canon lens.

Electronic Shutter is also very useful when using continuous light for product photography.

It is possible to use the electronic shutter on the 50mp back (and camera) handheld. One needs to pay a bit of attention to technique, but it's workable. Shot below taken with CV 15mm, just walking around.

Not many use continuous light for product photography. You usually need flash and lots of it to use a small enough aperture to have the product in focus front to back.
If you do use continuous it should be DC powered. I have heard of banding with AC powered lights

In the USA many studios have switched over to continuous lighting for product photography without issue. For some, it is a mix of strobe and continuous, but for many others, the advances in color quality and increases in illumination have meant switching over to continuous exclusively.

For video maybe but shooting all day with a continuous light bright enough to shoot product at f11 would be very hard on everyone involved.

Bob, these studios are photo studios. This isn't a "would be" scenario, this is a has already happened scenario. Real world, continuous lights have become well established for product photography. Strobe still has a place. But continuous light is now in use in a substantial percentage of the large studios we work with. If anything, I would say that for product, they dominate. Unless someone needs to freeze motion or shoot people. Then we still see strobe. Even Brad Kaye, our technical services manager, who still has a few long term clients he shoots projects for, replaced the Profoto and Broncolor strobes that he used with continuous light. And the amount of light output has only increased since he wrote the below article.
