You know the feeling we can sometimes get, after spending lots of time, effort and money, putting ourselves in exactly the right location, at exactly the right time and under the best possible conditions and then in the briefest of heart pounding moments, it all comes together and pays off big time? I think is the absolute essence of what landscape photography is all about and is what we are all continually striving to achieve.

Because you only require one shot in your life like this one, to experience that feeling and when you do get it, I guarantee you will become instantly hooked and have an insatiable craving to experience more of those feelings, for the rest of your life.

Sorry for waxing on a bit too lyrical there for a moment, but you all know exactly what I mean don't you?

Yes, Dave, and thank you for the lyrical moment.

This is one of the many shots done during a Hans Kruse workshop* (a LuLa member, btw) in the Dolomites.

Really easy. You just have to typically get up at 3 am, drive for one hour in the pitch darkness, on hairpin-turn, hair-raising roads, often hike for the next half an hour or more up the mountain**, with 10 kg backpack, then hurriedly set up the tripod and camera, waiting for that magic moment... which sometimes materializes, sometimes not.

I made 10 (bracketed, thus 30) shots in the span of 23 minutes, as the drama in the sky was developing. Here are the four selected (the third is the same as the OP):

Hans Kruse takes away your night rest but it delivers !
The Dolomites are made of some sort of limestone - dolomite!
To walk there is magnificent but there is no water- that - you have to carry…
Btw where is Hans?

Hans is alive and kicking quite well. Busy with workshops.

On the other hand, I noticed that not too many older forum members are still here or post often.

What I think makes this image attractive is the sequence of the structures that culminate in the tower jutting into the sky.
