New macOS Ventura – run it on your 2012> Mac!
« on: October 25, 2022, 07:13:19 pm »

So Apple says, the following Mac computers are officially supported by macOS Ventura:

      •MacBook (2017 and newer)
      •MacBook Air (2018 and newer)
      •MacBook Pro (2017 and newer)
      •Mac mini (2018 and newer)
      •Mac Studio (2022)
      •iMac (2017 and newer)
      •iMac Pro (2017)
      •Mac Pro (2019 and newer)

So what if you have a perfectly good machine going back to 2012 or a bit later and you don't want to junk it (or run it unsecured without the latest patches that aren't offered for it)?

The Dortania folks have just released their OCLP app which makes it possible to run Ventura (and Monterey) on older Macs very easily. I've done it myself several times and it's great fun seeing the old Macs rise from the dead! Screenshot shows a 2013 iMac running the Ventura release.

There's no cost to do this other than needing a flash drive...

Usually it is a case of not supported old hardware - like wifi etc.
But often also a simple case of Apple wanting you to buy something new..

But of course! It's definitely about the new hardware. To be fair, anything M1 or above is way better than Intel, but the older hardware is still perfectly fine for most tasks and shouldn't be forced to the curb.

As for wi-fi, certain GPUs, etc., the patch addresses such issues and all is usually well.

Just beware of this ...

Thanks for the heads-up! This is an example of just because you CAN do something (whether via OCLP or even on supported hardware) perhaps you SHOULDN'T – at least not until the dust settles a bit.

The current rule of thumb with Apple and perhaps other developers is to avoid a .0 release. Let others "test". Unless you have spare computers of course.

Soon enough though everything gets sorted.

LRC 12.01 is released.  It fixes the problem where LR would not run if your catalog is on an external drive
