Cannot install Epson 7800 on Windows 10
« on: March 13, 2022, 04:24:11 am »

Hi folks, to begin with, I am a computer geek and know a lot about Windows, Linux, and even some Mac. I write C/C++ compilers professionally. All that just to say, I have finally met my match ;-P. Long story short is that I have 2 Epson 7800, one converted to Piezo, and neither would talk to my Win10 PC currently.

The long story is that the Piezo 7800 WAS working on the same PC, and I just got another 7800 to print colors (my 7900 recently died....) and somehow something broke. I have downloaded the latest compatible driver from epson.com

The best I can tell is that Win10 refuses to install the Epson driver over the generic Local Print Queue (from Events tab in the printer Properties under Device Manager)
***
Driver Name: printqueue.inf
Class Guid: {1ed2bbf9-11f0-4084-b21f-ad83a8e6dcdc}
Driver Date: 06/21/2006
Driver Version: 10.0.21390.1
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Section: NO_DRV_LOCAL
Driver Rank: 0x1
Matching Device Id: PRINTENUM\LocalPrintQueue
Outranked Drivers: oem7.inf:usbprint\epsonstylus_pro_78007703:00FF0002 c_swdevice.inf:SWD\GenericRaw:00FF3001
Device Updated: false
Parent Device: SWD\PRINTENUM\PrintQueues

*****

Somehow it outranks the OEM drivers

Things I have tried
  • reboot in test mode to disable unsigned driver check
  • change group policy or some such to treat all drivers equally
  • reboot multiple times

I have an ancient XP box for scanning, and I have verified that both printers do work fine under the XP box.

Any help is appreciated. My next step is to reinstall Win10, but I need to back up my files first, as I had installed Windows Insider Preview and I can't just reset the PC and keep my files.

Anyway, appreciate any comments.

When I bought a used 9600 I discovered that Epson did not make a driver for it beyond XP but they did for Mac, so I bought a used Mac just to run the 9600. Sounds like Epson is in the process of discontinuing support for the x800 series as well.

So you can either install Win 7 on your computer as a secondary operating system or buy a Mac.

Normally, this should not be a problem.
The last driver version from 2016 that I have seen for the Pro 7800 has the version 6.6.2.

Here is the link: https://www.epsondriver.net/epson-stylus-pro-7800-drivers/

According to Epson this is a 32 bit version and runs without problems under Windows 10 64 bit. However, if the installer is 16 bit (e.g. an older Installshield version) then they have a problem. There helps then in the standard only a 32 bit environment / OS in which 16 bit programs are still running.

Greetings Gerd

Yea, I got that version but Win10 insists of using the generic USB type 3 driver. This is something specific to Win 10 ranking driver, and I can't seem to change its mind problem.

Thanks

I haven't had a problem with Win 10 x64 on multiple computers. However, I run though the printer's ethernet adapter. Haven't used the USB since Win 7.

Yea, I'm thinking of getting a couple Ethernet cards. Thanks

For anyone in the future who found this thread, the problem is fixed by installing an ethernet. If you get a used card (and they are probably the only ones available), you will probably need to set its IP. I have both 7800 working on the PC now.
