Linear Profiles Option by Tony Kuyper
« on: July 24, 2021, 06:25:46 am »

Tony has just made available a new set of profiles.

https://tonykuyper.wordpress.com/2021/07/23/the-linear-profile-a-new-beginning-in-light-room-and-camera-raw/

PS: My first impressions - On bodies where I have custom profiles made using the ColorChecker Passport, the advantage seemed less obvious and on the examples I ran, the custom profiles gave a quicker path to the final destination. On camera bodies I did not have custom profiles for, Tony's profiles did well. (Pace Tony, I would not recommend using Auto as a starting point.)

Interesting, and thanks for the info. I just installed Kuyper's linear profiles for my 7D, and will be working with them over the next few days. Easy enough to change them in either LR or PS, so it's a no-loss experiment.

Yet another "Solution" in search of a problem.
Under the text: Advantages of linear profiles: I see mostly assumptions and a lack of proof of concept.

The proof is in the eating of the pudding. On the examples I tried, his profiles work better for highlight recovery on those bodies I didn't have a custom profile for. For my custom profiles with the standard gamma curve, I see little advantage. As Tony himself has noted, it is possible to get to your goal with any of the profiles in there. Just takes more work.

Kuyper has indeed solved problems - his TK panel is an outstanding piece of work.

No: highlights are affected solely by exposure (and that is solely an attribute of the amount of light striking the sensor through only Aperture and Shutter).

Highlight “recovery” from the ACR engine “works” (somewhat) only if one or two channels of the raw data is not clipped; so expose correctly and ideally and it's moot and provide superior data and rendering.

I do recognize that *some* photographers are unable to ideally expose their raws and might feel highlight “recovery” and profiles are their “fix” to a fundamental part of photography sadly.

There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.” -Warren Buffett

My impression too.

This "Advantage" was enough for me to go away:

Quote
“Expose-to-the-right” has greater potential since applying a linear profile darkens the image.

Indeed, seems he's got some misunderstandings of both optimal exposure, its effect on the actual raw data, and what profiles actually do with that data.

Wow, with the world filled with political and Covid-19 misinformation, do we really need this?
Within the first 2.5 minute's of the video, this guy has already provided numerous misunderstandings about DCP profiles.
Want to go into those silly, assumed ideas provided in just the first 2 minutes? I stopped viewing after that.
Sorry, this fellow hasn't a clue about what profiles (excuses me, 'camera profiles'), actually DCP profile are, do, and affect.
The first 2 minutes of this video is nonsense.
And now I'll have to cross post the above, since folks here deserve to know!

Andrew, do you have a video or online essay explaining this subject in detail with the correct information?

Tony's repository for linear profiles is growing. He has now added profiles for some DJI drones.

Thanks for sharing this! For a beginner like me, it is very easy to understand and to use. However, I have still more to learn. Plus, I want to take some writing courses because it is very difficult for me to express my ideas clearly and also to develop them. Plus, I make many mistakes, but I always use an editing service that I have chosen after reading a lot of reviews and the Polished Paper reviews indeed. Wish me luck!

Fortunately, neither of these fictitious entities appear to be very ambitious in their posting activities on this forum... or very bright.

It's not necessarily about spam postings, the bots could also be harvesting other data.

Most disappointing is the lack of action from any moderators. Once spammers were kicked out and deleted the same day of a report.

could you share your take on DCP profiles?

Is there a good reason Adobe does not support the RAW of the Nikon Z9 in older versions of LR ( 32 bits 10.4-mojave)
really love my 32bits programs
