Have just come back in our EV to UK from France.  There are loads of chargers, often very rapid, i.e. 20-25 mins, more than in UK and at 1/3 to 2/3 UK price.  Work places in UK are starting to put chargers in for employees, and Sainsbury's supermarkets are installing rapid ones that will charge while doing a shop.

Someone wrote to the Times newspaper that he does not suffer range anxiety in his EV as he gets bladder anxiety first.

Jonathan

Ah those roads!

Even twenty-five years or so ago, when I had yet to experience my first heart attack, the culture shock when getting off the ferry at Dover to face the long drive oop north was humiliating. Our motorways, compared with the French ones, were a disgrace, a result of both political hubris and fear by all parties to make the public shell out in order to enjoy properly maintained, high-speed motorways.

Some time afterwards, I achieved my first heart event, and my wife refused to accept any more foreign marathons. That being the case, I can’t say with any certainty whether things improved later on. I recall being parked in the fast lane the M6, yep, engine off, in my delightful, Spanish-plated black XR3i of the time. I think we’d innocently contrived to be in that part of England during Motor Show time.

So more nonsense based on a decades old anecdote.

It was pretty much a question; are things better on the UK motorways today?

Russia sure knows how to treat image makers who mock their leader https://petapixel.com/2025/09/26/museum-director-sentenced-to-russian-jail-over-composite-photo-of-putin-and-hitler/. I'm sure many envy them that power.

Sally Mann is interviewed by NPR and warns about culture wars, https://petapixel.com/2025/09/25/after-her-photos-were-seized-by-police-sally-man-predicts-new-era-of-culture-wars/.

We are "this" far away from an exhibition of "degenerate art".

Well, why is anyone surprised?

The RC church invented the Spanish Inquisition, the same psychology was used in France to eliminate the Cathars; in the States you have a plethora of tribal “Christians” doing their level best to trample over women and reduce them to domestic slavery and private whore-cum-baby farmer. How any of that equates with the concept of a divine, merciful God, is beyond me. Yes, I do have my form of spiritual faith, but it has nothing to do with any of those organised power structures of the holier than thous. God, at best, is an emotion within, an attempted reasoning of what life may be about, not a subscription to any clerical brotherhood, whose principal means of conviction is good old-fashioned fear. So much for love, then, in their creeds. I had the personal bad luck to spend several long years in a boarding school “guided” by missionaries of these very sects. Happily, in those years, they held no political power outwith their home states. Now, the rot is corrupting government policies across, mainly, the English-speaking world.

Art, ever the public face of whatever represented the changing epitome of female pulchritude, is a sitting duck for those people, able, in today’s political/social climate, to fantasise, project and, sadly, execute their varied hysterias both to and upon a pack of morons too afraid to think for itself and terrified to appear different to the herd within which it runs. Whilst I can understand that fear, I can’t forgive it.

The history of the act of burning books and destroying art is, sadly, a long one.

I didn't know that Portland Oregon was a "war zone". The various media kept that well hidden.

He thought he saw it on tv. Perhaps he got confused with a piece on Gaza.

I hope I’m mistaken, but I can’t see Hamas accepting his “peace plan”, which looks more like a tactic he and his buddies think Hamas can only refuse, and thus provide a new PR number for the continuation of the killing.

I can see Trump being honestly interested in peace. Not out of compassion or any moral sensibility, but only because he is hot for the Peace Prize.

So popular thinking suggests, but when you consider how little he's actually managed to do either in Ukraine or Gaza, you can't help feeling he has no power other than to supply or withhold weaponry. Both Israel and Russia seem to be saying yes, yes, and doing exactly as they intended to do all along, people in their sights dying by the score every day. All smoke and a few cracked mirrors, then.

Will that be enough to fool the Peace Prize people? Could well be...

Well, the intentional small boats flotilla attempting to land food aid directly to Gaza seems to be being hassled by the combined powers of the Israeli Navy in its illegal, self-declared and enforced blockade of the Palestinian coastline. Spanish tv news showed a current Israeli naval officer (female) telling the little fleet of yachts that it must divert immediately to an Israeli port, from where the aid cargo will be transmitted to Gaza. Funny that; they have blocked the vast amounts of aid already massed on trucks for delivery, letting food rot, and when allowing controlled PR deliveries of it, immediately afterwards attacking the poor sods trying to get to said aid. That that cynical action is the precise reason that the flotilla exists to circumvent seems lost to the Israeli navy. Yeah, right…

The Spanish and, I think the Italian govts. sent naval boats to offer protection to the yachts, yet have been ordered not to enter the blockaded area or otherwise engage with the Israelis. Kinda negates both the purpose and the moral strength of those two countries. Bend the knee to Trump and his friend. What an international disgrace. I wonder how Turkey will react if/when its nationals on that venture are arrested or harmed. Somehow, I believe they will show more balls than the rest.

Thank goodness Trump is such a powerful president or Gaza and Ukraine/Russia war would be big problems. It occurred to me that Trump may not understand maps very well or he'd realize that Russia isn't very far, just a short distance across Arctic waters. But I can't hold that against him, very few people are comfortable with maps or have ever seen a desk top globe.

I guess Trump is busy domestically trying to sidle his way into martial law without calling it that so everyone will be fooled. He wants soldiers in NY now, among other places, and he repeated to his soldiers at that pep rally that Canada should be the 51st state. He must trying to prime them. His hotels in Vancouver and Toronto didn't do well, that guy can really hold a grudge. I hear Jared's business deals are going gangbusters in Saudi Arabia. Bully for him.

I like it that Hegseth wants his warriors to look like real men with short hair and impeccable grooming. I don't think the Viet Kong or mujahideen worried much about their appearance. :)

What about Greenland? What about the Panama canal? What about California? How's the war in Oregon going, I wonder.

Did they catch the guys yet who were eating dogs? I don't think so but I keep reading that they've had to hire back some the DOGE firings. I guess they should have been more careful. Speaking of which, Musk has been quiet lately, I hope he's gone back to his MARS mission, he was good at that.

You may well be on the money regarding presidential map-reading skills, and it may not really be entirely his fault. As a rich kid, from birth, it may have been his fortune - or otherwise - never to have had to acquire a driving licence, in which case, as long as his chauffeurs had the skills to read maps, it didn't seem a thing with which to have to overburden the brain. Could have been awkward on romantic dates, but then with friends able to arrange such things on a professional level... apart from that, chauffeurs and domestic staff are totally invisible to those who can have them. Win win.

Martial law is an excellent solution for holding on to power for just as long as you can control the forces. Swearing allegiance to some flag or an other is not the same thing as feeling allegiance; situation ethics are far stronger drivers than vacuous promises to flags. I was a boy scout for some time - I understand the psychology of swearing stuff.

I suppose that the ideal Hegseth man must be a skinhead. Kinda figures.

Interesting piece: vanity knows no bounds, and neither does cavalier attitude to responsibility. Boy, don’t those people just love their in-community tech-speak! Obviously, a tv personality is just the man with the right qualifications for the job title he enjoys. What could possibly go wrong?

Come to think of it, Mr Putin must the most relevantly qualified leader of them all. Now there’s a thought.

I saw some images online of ICE stormtroopers along with their vehicles in Illinois. Reminded me a bit of Tiananmen Square.

Trump sunk the 4th Venezuelan boat. This one was supposed to have drugs on board too. He also stated that the US is in "armed conflict" with the cartel. Did any of those cartel guys shoot at the US military? If not, it's a bit of a one-sided conflict. Next step, martial law, followed by cancelled mid-terms. Xi and Putin must be laughing, they didn't have to lift a finger.

And in case things weren't nutty enough, some folks have decided to have a hissy fit over the NFL's choice for the Super Bowl halftime show. It's someone called Bad Bunny, whom I'd never heard of. I looked him up and he's a Latino rapper, among other talents. I don't really know what the objections to him are, but last week Trump threatened to send ICE to the Super Bowl, so Bad Bunny may be a real badass. Would ICE have to pay retail for their tickets?

Some online commenter (sorry, but I've forgotten which one) suggested that Trump may be grooming Hegseth to run for Prez. Both JD Vance and Mike Johnson might be miffed about that. Since JD converted to Catholicism a while back, I wonder if that would rule him out him for the top job among MAGA. MJ's religious beliefs may be more in line, but Hegseth has that Christian warrior tattoo, that's hard to beat.

I would have thought by now that the "states rights" crowd would have had something to say about all the federal troops being sent to cities. Have any of them been sent to red cities yet, is anyone keeping score? Maybe Trump could forbid the Super Bowl being played in red states, seems like a natural next step. That might be more difficult to stage manage in baseball though, he'd had to fix it so that both teams in the World Series would be from red states.

Fixing games is child’s play - much like playing them when you are an adult… why would you? Play them, I mean.

This is not really breaking news, but it is new to me. China has developed a system whereby you can get a complete full charge on your EV within just a few minutes. It's done by battery swapping, and an automated system at a service station will take out your old battery and put in a newly charged one in just a few minutes. As usual, the United States is far behind in this, a technology that would remove one of the barriers that prevent many people from owning an EV. Here's a story about it.
