You might be looking at a situation where in the future a woman who travels to another state to have an abortion may possibly one day be prosecuted by her home state. In the land of the free?

Everyone suffering in this world were born.  So, perhaps birthing should be illegal, not abortion.

I saw a great photo of Margaret Atwood drinking out of a mug lettered with "I told you so," very funny.

It is funny indeed.  Makes us proud to be Canadians, eh?  :)

I didn't read the details of the story because it's summer and who cares about Trump, really, but I saw on a headline that at some testimony or deposition or whatever, Trump pleaded the fifth. Imagine a guy running for President who had to plead the fifth to something. Maybe Orban can find a job for him in Hungary.

I also saw that some GOP spokespeople are talking revenge investigations if/when they win the House/Senate. They want to go after Hunter, of course, but maybe the current AG too, was that who they threatened?  The implication is that these political leaders view criminal prosecutions as just more partisan political fodder. That's some serious banana republic type stuff right there. It's sad to watch this.

And then I read this opinion piece re the un-separation of church and state, https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/08/10/supreme-court-separation-of-church-and-state-00050571. Man, what year is this again?

I don't think I've heard this term before, "The Lie Economy", https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/08/10/alex-jones-and-the-lie-economy-00050731.

That article uses Alex Jones to demonstrate that despite multi-million dollar settlements (even assuming that they eventually get paid out), that might not stop the practitioners as there may still be profits to be made in the business. So what do you think, is this what the "founding fathers" had in mind when they came up with "free speech"?

Trump in the past:
Quote
“The mob takes the Fifth,” Trump said during a 2016 campaign rally. “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”
Trump the hypocrite today:
Quote
”When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.”
No surprise to nearly everyone here. Nearly... 😢

Some schools in North Carolina will have AR-15s stored on site to help prevent school shootings, https://www.newsweek.com/ar-15s-stored-county-schools-protect-against-mass-shootings-1731535.

I can't see any problems with this idea.

Please forgive me for bringing this up. Anyone have a guess why Trump would, at this late date, still have incriminating evidence at his place? There must be a fireplace there, no?

He hasn't finished watching the youtube tutorial on how to photograph 20 boxes of old documents.

Robert,

I think this should actually be a two part question: Why did Trump take the property to begin with, and your question, why did he retain the property when he could have easily destroyed it?

To the first, I think his psyche took a real hit when he was booted from the Presidency and, in his mind, taking those documents was his way to hold on to some degree of power that he lost. And his greatest need, even more than wealth, family, you name it, is power.

To the second, he spent his time in office, largely unchallenged. Sure a couple Impeachments, but he skated through those, which solidified his belief he was untouchable. I think it was easy for his ego to believe he would not be subject of anything as drastic as a warrant (I suspect almost everyone else also believed a warrant was unlikely). At worst, he was confident he may be subject of some minor legal skirmish (subpoena) to which he would play the usual delay game and finally, hand over some part of the booty, and likely hang on to a trophy or two. And that would be the end of it. Surprise!!

My fave part was when he described it as an “unwarranted” attack.

Marv

The unanswered question is - what were the documents he destroyed?

It's mostly forgotten now but a few years ago there was some controversy, including on this site, about how authorities were separating children from their parents at the border. There is an article about that in The Atlantic, https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/09/trump-administration-family-separation-policy-immigration/670604/. It's not pleasant reading.

I learned a new word today, "based". A guy running for the Arizona Senate is based. Turns out that if you like ticking off "liberals", then you're based. The explanation is given here https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/08/12/blake-masters-king-of-the-trolls-00051318. The guy is a disciple of Peter Thiel, they even wrote a book together. There's some weird stuff going on in Arizona. :)
