Democrats and anti-Trump fanatics must be disappointed.  He didn't pardon himself, his family, start a new war or press the nuclear button.  Nor did he crash Air Force 1 into the Capitol.

Out of all of the news today, Trump's pardons are what is really chapping my ass!

I can't find a single pardon that makes any sense.  I am still holding out hope that Biden will now issue the right pardon of Snowden, but not likely.

I also am looking forward to Cuba being opened back up.  Cigars are so much cheaper on the island.

Bide?

Unlike my issues with loose and lose, this was actually the fault of my laptop keyboard.  I am patiently waiting for the next MacBook Pro 16 inch to be released.

Here's the deal Frank, I really dont care if MSNBC or some other openly partisan news source fawns over Biden, it is to be expected.  But what gets me is that the mainstream media (CBS, NBC, CNN, etc.)claims to be neutral unbiased, but they are not.

There is no objectively neutral news coverage. Certainly there are news sources on the left and on the right which claim to be fair and balanced and both fall short. So it makes sense to read news from a variety of sources.

I thought it was some new nickname or something.

Not going to lie, I really am feeling the unity today.

Anti-Biden Antifa attack Portland police officers forcing cops to retreat

I dont think Biden has much to worry about from the right, but now with the Dems controlling both houses, I feel he is destined to be pushed off the cliff by his own flank.  I predict first on the list to truly push him into the realm of incompetence will be $15 minimum wage, through budget reconciliation none the less.  Sanders is already pushing forward; hunker down for another recession.

From Bartlett's Book of Anecdotes.

Pierre Salinger was mystified one day when the President [John Kennedy] called him and asked him how many Cuban cigars were available in Washington. Salinger couldn't make a guess, but offered to find out how many cigar stores there were. "Buy every Havana they've got," Kennedy told him.  Later that evening the President announced an embargo on Cuban products, including cigars, for every American.

What you actually mean is that you can't find a pardon that seems *reasonable.* But some certainly make sense. For example, Steve Bannon has been charged by the feds with an obvious fraud that netted him more than a million dollars. The feds could hold a deal over his head, if he has anything incriminating on Trump. Pardoned, the feds have no hold on him, and there's no reason for him to rat out Trump. Certainly makes sense to me, at least, from a Trump perspective.

Perhaps you're right, with Steve Bannon.  And if it was only Bannon I would be more inclined to agree with this theory.

However, if you take the 30K foot view, it still makes no sense, or perhaps it just gets more confusing.  He pardoned a lot of shitbags on his way out, none of whom provide him any benefit, and given who some of them were, I'm surprised he did not just go for broke and pardon Joe Exotic.

Another one that makes sense to me:

From ArtNews:

The New York-based dealer Hillel Nahmad, known as Helly Nahmad, received a pardon yesterday from President Trump in his final hours in office. In April 2014, Nahmad was sentenced to a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty to a federal gambling charge; he was released from prison after serving five months.
Helly Nahmad, who reportedly spent over $21m buying the entire 51st floor of Trump Tower in New York, was one of several suspects accused of playing a leadership role in a $100m gambling and money laundering network.

Perhaps he pardoned a few close friend shitbags and through in a bunch of other random shitbags (like Kwame Kilpatrick who made a cottage industry off of being a corrupt politician and of a different party) to muddy the waters.

That's only two so far, but a pattern is emerging...

Be interesting to see if, after this particular pardon sh*t show, the legislators in both parties can agree to modify the President's clemency powers. Or least circumscribe how it is used. Because if not enough of them think this stinks on high, well, it either doesn't say much for them, or maybe they like it that way, thinking it might be useful some day.

Wouldn't it be good if Bannon gets charged by a state instead? With Trump's pardons not applying at that level, the FBI might still be able to get the dirt on the Small-handed Orange Trumpanzee.

A good succinct opinion piece by David Frum at The Atlantic about Trump's "swamp draining", https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/01/trump-was-swamp/617748/.

Seeking to ascribe rational motives to Trump for pardoning those whom he did pardon may be a fool's errand.

Anyone care to explain why we are given farewell messages from Trump's kids? For God's sake, just go away. No one wants to hear from you.

Best thing everyone, and especially the media, can do is completely ignore them.  If he runs naked across the lawn at his golf club with his hair alight, we should all just turn away.

At a time when people have lost their jobs, especially at the bottom end of pay, to increase minimum wage is just counterproductive.  Instead of creating jobs we need, it's going to increase unemployment.

If they did away with it totally, some firms might even start manufacturing stuff here.  Like pillows or whatever.  But it might only be economically practical at let's say $12 an hour.  So by increasing it to $15, it's only pushing more manufacturing off-shore eliminating even more jobs.  So the money we're handing out winds up going to China to buy their goods, adding insult to injury.

He's only helping Republicans in 2022.  Unfortunately for Democrats who run both houses of Congress and the presidency now, they're going to get blamed when the economy tanks and the debt created by the Fed requires higher taxes.  Republicans should be thankful they lost.  :)

What does "economically practical" mean? How did you calculate that $12/hour is "economically practical"? Who is the we that is handing out money?

The average wage for a Chinese worker in the manufacturing sector is approximately 78,147 Yuan ($12,100 or $5.80/hour). By comparison, the average wage for a US worker in the manufacturing sector is approximately $48,300 or $23.22/hour. It would appear that whether the US minimum wage is $7.25/hour, $12.00/hour, or $15.00/hour, the invisible hand of the free market is going to ship manufacturing jobs to China and other countries with lower labor costs. It is obviously more complicated than that, but if we are only focusing on labor costs, it is no surprise that virtually everything in Walmart is made in China.

With respect to pillows, at least before he became a Trump supporting conspiracy theorists, Mike Lindell, aka the MyPillow Guy, made a pretty good living selling pillows made in the USA. I have no idea where his pillow parts came from though.

So you want to compete with China, Vietnam etc... at the low end of wages just so you can manufacture pillows in the US? Let the race to the bottom begin.

But anyway, I should have been more clear, she has a degree and practice in child psychology, not exactly my choice for a health expert.

You continue to post more misinformation regarding Dr. Rachel Levine. She IS a "real MD" that has spent over 30-years diagnosing and treating real patients as a physician both in hospital environments and private practice. She is NOT a child psychologist or psychiatrist. She has the same general education and training as any of the "real" medical doctors from whom you've ever sought examination, treatment, or diagnosis. Like any other physician she had medical training that required clinical rotation thru every area of medicine in a hospital.

In addition to her general medical education to be come a "real MD" and licensed to practice medicine, she choice a specialty of pediatrics and received additional education and training in that field. Beyond that, she received additional training in the subspecialty of adolescent medicine (approximately teen to young adults). She is a licensed physician that is additionally board certified in both specialties of pediatrics and adolescent medicine with decades of experience in treating patients for a broad array of illness and disease. A principle difference between your primary care doctor and a pediatrician is that a pediatrician has additional training in medical issues involving the development and maturing of children and adolescents. They provide all of the same care that your doctors offer except with younger patients. Pediatricians may have additional pediatric subspecialties like pediatric oncology, cardiology, anesthesiology, etc.

https://www.healthychildren.org/A-Pediatricians-Training

She has been a leader in her field as a practicing physician providing patient care and as an academic researcher and professor. She has been nationally and internationally recognized for her work in medicine.

If given the option between a child psychologist or a real MD, I would go with latter every day of the week, especially for public health issues.

Then you have no need for concern. She is a "real MD".
