Tonights sad news: 85 million Americans may travel this Christmas/New Year's.
900 hospitals have filled their ICUs.
Many stupid people will cause unnecessary deaths to follow. 😰

That is really unconscionable and extremely stupid.

Following the recent Trump's ban on Cuban rum and cigars, Rubio now demands a prompt US retaliation and increased tariffs on import of Stolichnaya vodka and other premium spirits from Russia.

Somehow I don't think tariffs on vodka are going to be a deterrent to Putin's behavior. Maybe as a part of a larger response. I have no idea what we export to Russia but I assume Russia would retaliate.

You mean the Oddjob reference. He was in the book I read too.

There is so much I don't remember, lost in the mists of time:

"[Oddjob] has a taste for cats as food, apparently acquired in Korea when food was in short supply (Bond frames Goldfinger's yellow cat for destruction of surveillance film, and as punishment, sees the cat given to Oddjob for dinner)."

That is one of the skill requirements for "00" status. Knowing how and when to frame the villan's favorite pet. I don't recall anyone getting to eat Dr. Evil's cat, Mr. Bigglesworth, so Austin Powers has a ways to go with his secret agent training. Obviously.

Actually, retaliation is completely pointless in this example. Microsoft and other US software companies should never release software that allows read/write access to the critical parts of a computer operating system.

Bernard's and Frank's theories are quite plausible, but it could have been also the Cuban operatives trained in the old Soviet Union, although Marco Rubio tries to divert the suspicion to Russian hackers. Following the recent Trump's ban on Cuban rum and cigars, Rubio now demands a prompt US retaliation and increased tariffs on import of Stolichnaya vodka and other premium spirits from Russia.

A friend has a theory about why Trump seems to be downplaying the recent cyberattacks. He figures that he's just trying to build up herd immunity to such attacks.

Going back to herd immunity etc, just finished watching the CNN documentary on the 1918 Pandemic and it was amazing.
Didn't realize the "Spanish Flu" actually came from Kansas! The Treaty of Versailles, affected by this "flu", mind blowing. Anti-mask'ers existed.
Well worth watching.

It just keeps coming, https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/sidney-powell-special-counsel-trump-election_n_5fde93ecc5b6a7df6664fb15?ri18n=true.

Sidney Powell as Special Counsel? We might have gone past paranoid narcissism, I think we're into bonkers territory now. It's starting to get a bit creepy watching this sad spectacle. Why doesn't one of his kids just tell the old twit to shut the eff up and go away. Golf maybe, or work on his tan, just disappear for a few weeks, no one expects him to actually do anything at this point.

Looks like congress will agree on a trillion-dollar support/stimulus package while restraining the Fed a little from financing everything especially state deficits with funny money next year when/if the economy goes off the rails.   This might be a good time before the new year to take profits in stocks before they raise taxes for 2021 on capital gains and everything else.  Goodbye Trump tax legislation if the democrats win in Georgia.

:)

Now, I hope we at least all agree that the official story shared by the Trump administration or Trump himself (they don't seem to agree) has very little chance of representing the truth of the matter.

So looking into what really happened now and not in 30 years may be a valuable exercise.

Cheers,
Bernard

Good point. I read an article once that said Trump occasionally makes exaggerations and aspirational statements, and, unlike me, he occasionally veers toward sarcasm, so maybe it wouldn't be a fruitless exercise to examine whether his latest pronouncements fall into one of those categories before we conclude he just hasn't gotten around to reading his presidential briefings in a week or so. Or we could could just flip a coin: heads, he's lying; tails, he's an idiot. I am personally in favor of the coin toss; it is how we usually solve our most pressing national problems like who is going to kick off and who is going to receive. I heard that now that he is a senator, the old washed up college football coach is going to suggest a coin toss whenever there is a tie in the Senate, so they don't have to drag the vice president down to the capitol in his pajamas.

In light of the political doings over the past couple of days, I am going to e-mail my senators and remind them that if they worked during the day, they wouldn't have to stay up all night negotiating and voting. Sometimes when people are in the heat of battle, they overlook the obvious stuff. Not that, in this case, they were negotiating; they were just walking back and forth to and from their colleagues offices to find out who had the best Christmas candy in a dish by the door. It was how they were keeping themselves awake. Sure beats pinching yourself. One guy had a big stack of full size Snickers bars, so everyone decided to vote for his idea. Most of them didn't have a clue what the words Federal Reserve lending policy actually mean, but if this guy was smart enough to put out full size Snickers bars to get their vote, maybe he was an expert on Federal Reserve lending policy too.

Remember old Mitt Romney? Who has a first name like that? Anyway, he lost his presidential bid in 2012 against Obama, so now has the runner-up prize of being one of the senators from Utah, where polygamy used to be legal, but isn't any more, at least not officially. Anyway, he is a Republican. You probably gathered that because I said he lost to Obama, and most people know that Obama is a Democrat who was born in Kenya. So old Mitt boy occasionally comes out of his Trump trance, and votes with the Democrats on stuff like impeachment, unlike Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, who leads you to believe she might vote with the Democrats so she can get a spot on commie/lib news shows, but always chickens out at the last minute. Now where was I? Oh, Mitt Romney. Well, he is a pretty perceptive guy, so a reporter from The Hill, which I don't know if they are a commie/lib new source or not because they seem to be all over the place, was interviewing him, and when he got through and wrote his article he needed a title for it so he came up with this: "Romney: Trump has a 'blind spot' when it comes to Russia". That Mitt Romney is the master of understatement, no doubt about it. Or maybe the reporter was Rip Van Winkle, and this was his first story after waking up from a four year nap. Many people say he, the reporter I mean, is angling for a job as editor of the No Shit Sherlock Gazette.

So while that reporter was polishing up his article, another reporter, this time from The Guardian, which may or may not be a real newspaper in the UK, because they sure don't do as many stories on Harry and Meghan as the Express, got in for an interview with Mitt Romney on the subject of the election, and Trump's efforts to prevent Biden from fraudulently assuming the mantle of Commander in Chief, and to right the most villainous wrong in the history of mankind except, of course, Eve offering Adam a taste of her apple, which I am pretty sure was a euphemism for something else because she wasn't wearing any clothes. They tell you in Sunday school that the apple represents knowledge, but they never really go into what kind of knowledge, and besides you can't believe everything they tell you in Sunday school. Have you actually heard them try to explain the Trinity? Well, they, I mean Mitt and the reporter, not Adam and Eve, had a nice chat and went over all three sides of the issue, the three sides being Republican, Democratic, and Just Shoot Me, and the reporter finishes up the article and comes up with this title: "Trump attempt to overturn election is 'nutty and loopy', Romney says". Kind of makes you wonder if he thought he was interviewing Mitt Romney, but it was really Mr. Rogers.

His stance, excuse not to deal with Putin and rubbish about China is dangerous but he'll be gone soon.
Let me just say that my wife works at a national lab at a  fairly high level and has a very high security clearance. We don't talk about her work. When she heard what Trump said about the hack, she rolled her eyes and confirmed, he's simply lying.

In other news, Jason Chaffitz won the Best Kiss-Ass Story of the Year award for this article appearing in, you guessed it, Fox News.

Jason Chaffetz: Melania Trump has been an outstanding first lady — liberal media have treated her unfairly

https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/melania-trump-first-lady-jason-chaffetz

I can't remember what any other First Lady did except Lady Bird Johnson, who got everyone to stop throwing trash out of their car windows and got auto junk yards to build fences around their property to block the view which usually looked worse than the auto junk. I think Dolly Madison started a snack food company, but I might be wrong about that one. Oh, Michelle Obama tried to get everyone to eat more vegetables, but that project was doomed from the start. I remember telling my son the first time they were served up that lima beans tasted like chocolate, but that ploy didn't last long. I don't think he even swallowed the first spoonful, and it was pretty gross when he spit them back out on his plate. He might have missed the plate and they landed on the floor. Fortunately, we had two dogs that were always hovering around. I think they might have spit them out too. But that's nothing compared to brussel sprouts. I'll save that story for later.

Let me just say that my wife works at a national lab at a  fairly high level and has a very high security clearance. We don't talk about her work. When she heard what Trump said about the hack, she rolled her eyes and confirmed, he's simply lying.

Well, that's easy to say, since he is lying all day long. However, this time he wasn't lying, he was just "downplaying" the alleged hacking campaign. That's much more mature and presidential stance than the whining and distressed comments from his fellow republicans. Heck, Trump assured us that there is nothing to worry about and if anything unusual happened, it must have been Chinese hacks not Russians. Even Microsoft said that the hackers wanted just to disrupt a few companies and divide the already divided US population. Besides, the alleged attacks took place a long time ago, so let's forget about it.

Quote
As the CIA concludes that Russia tried to help Donald Trump win the presidential election, intelligence officials have released one more intriguing detail: Russian hackers had dirt on the Republican National Committee but never released it, according to a new report. A senior administration official said, “We now have high confidence that they hacked the D.N.C. and the R.N.C., and conspicuously released no documents” from the Republicans, according to the New York Times. Officials said the hacks into the Republican committee took place in the spring, at the same time emails from the Democratic National Committee were stolen by hackers thought to be connected to Russian intelligence.

Investigators are divided on whether the hackers’ original goal was to support Trump or simply hedge their bets and go from there. President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly shrugged off revelations of Russian interference, doesn’t seem fazed by the conclusion of the RNC hack, despite the fact that any intel gathered by the hackers could be used later. On Friday, Trump’s transition team released a statement dismissing the CIA’s conclusion. “These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction," the statement said. “The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s now time to move on and ‘Make America Great Again.’”

https://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2016/12/10/report-russian-hackers-had-rnc-data-but-didn-t-release-it

Not surprisingly, many republicans displayed genuine shock and displeasure with the hacking campaign and now demand financial penalties and retaliatory hacks on Russian infrastructure. Trump could ask Rudy Giuliani to drop the suit against Sacha Baron Cohen and instead sue the bad Russian actors since he already has good connection in Russia. And as we heard, Trump met last Friday with Sidney Powell in the Oval Office Friday night, no doubt to help him to deal with both hackers and displeased republicans, who seem genuinely upset with hurt feelings. We all agree that it wasn't very nice from Putin to let his hack team play in our backyards. You just don't eavesdrop on your friend's secrets especially for prolonged periods. Well, unless they wanted to retaliate for our hacks and software intrusions.
