That's a great question.

But in the Covid case, the government is destroying the livelihoods and businesses of millions of people.
One has gone out of it's way to kill hundreds of thousands by not doing it's job protecting them.

How will they support their families?
Maybe the way you do, government handouts until the virus is under control.

Less deadly. And of course you forget about stopping at red lights and smoking on planes, driving drunk, because all where excellent examples you don't want to pay attention to or address.

Meanwhile, the hypocrite governor of California orders everyone to stay home while he goes out to eat with his wife and important political supporters.
Yes, shameful. But Trump has done far worse, more often, has a bigger megaphone.
Remember when he told us wearing a mask was patriotic? Then a week ago, invites hundreds for a party at the People's House, all without masks, social distancing? If course you don't.

its not about stupidity, its about self interest which is what a lot of people unfortunately tend to prioritize over the common good....
taxes come to mind, if it was left up to the individual there would not be much to spend on roads, eduction, healthcare ...or the military (where the US likes to spend its money)
smoking on planes (or public places) is a great example someone already mentioned
unions come to mind.....unless you would prefer child labor
guns are one thing that obviously should be much, much more controlled, freedom has nothing to do with being able to carry around war machines that can take out an entire Walmart in a few minutes...

I always find it interesting how conservatives define freedom: being able to say what they want no matter how offensive to others, put policies in place that tend to limit the freedom of others (and yes that includes guns) and disregard science and destroy nature....and others' future habitats...
and of course the big one: deciding that a woman does NOT have the right to choose what happens to her body
Your point is inconsistent with reality. Politicians respond to their voters.  They are doing what people want most of the time.  That's what representative democracy is about. Of course, everyone wants everything free.  Just tax the other fellow.  That's just human nature.

That's a great question.  Obviously, we draw lines all the time.  But in the Covid case, the government is destroying the livelihoods and businesses of millions of people.  Their lives are being destroyed.  How will they support their families? How will they provide shelter for their families? How will they feed their kids? Their lives are being turned topsy turvy. That's a lot different than the minor inconveniences of stopping at traffic lights and not speeding.  Meanwhile, the hypocrite governor of California orders everyone to stay home while he goes out to eat with his wife and important political supporters.

Like I asked before, what is closed around where you live? Everything is open around here and has been since June. The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker are all open for business. It is not the government's fault if nobody wants to go shopping because there's a pandemic. Even the hospitals are doing a brisk business. You have to have a reservation for an ICU bed weeks in advance though. Otherwise, you are going to get one of the less requested beds out in the hallway.

Here's an idea from planet crazy:
State Sen. Amanda Chase (R), a Republican candidate for governor in Virginia, called on President Trump to declare martial law to keep Joe Biden from being sworn in as the next president.

You can't make this up.
January 20th can not get here faster.

Yes, you are correct.  However its not the ideas or the way they are written that takes courage and conviction.  Its signing your name to them that does, Mr. Tech Talk.

It seems that the posts here represent the convictions (conviction: a firmly held belief or opinion) of the authors regardless of how they choose to identify themselves. So, let's address the courage that is required to post commentary here. What danger do you face, on the battlefield of this relatively obscure forum, that makes you feel courageous in posting with some personal identity attached? The danger of disapproval? It appears that you disapprove of my free choice to post anonymously and if you feel that it lessens the weight of—or renders invalid—whatever I choose to post, you can ignore my comments or assign to them whatever weight you choose. You're not the first to raise the issue, it's been thrown out as an attack on the credibility of my commentary before—as a way to dodge the substance of the arguments presented and generally when substantive or convincing counterarguments appear to be lacking or difficult to muster. Were some attempt made to link the asserted attack on my character to the content of the commentary I've made, I'd be happy to address it—but I've yet to see it.

I've expressed, on a few occasions, the reasons for my personal preference to post with a pseudonym. Since you've never inquired as to why I choose not to provide personal information online, I presume that you're not interested and are simply raising the subject as a convenient line of attack instead of putting forth substantive counterargument to my posts or simply choosing to ignore them as having no validity due to the lack of a personally identifiable link to someone who may—or may not—be who they claim to represent online. After all, it's the Wild West world of the internet and anyone can represent themself to be anyone they choose. A name, a weblink, a picture are all easily copied and pasted. I don't post here seeking personal attention or to bolster my ego regarding my courage. It's viewing the presentation of interesting information or well reasoned argument by some and the countering of misinformation and falsehoods pushed by others which represent any value to me in participating here.

In any event, congratulations on the exemplary courage you've shown in the battle of LuLa. Due to Covid restrictions, your medal can't be presented personally, but it's in the mail and should be arriving anytime.

Clean your weapons and load the magazines...

* Please don't display your beautifully cleaned weapons with their loaded magazines to the postman or he may fail to deliver your well earned medal for internet bravery. He may not have your courage.

One of the hospitals here had that setup back in March/April. It didn't see any use, but a least they were prepared. It is worse now than it was in March/April, so they may have to set it back up.

Isn't that what was called for the week before last. Some right-wing group put a full page ad for it in a D.C. paper, and then Michael Flynn and some other like minded "patriots" endorsed it on Twitter.

Politicians respond to their voters.  They are doing what people want most of the time.  That's what representative democracy is about. ...

Alan, your opinions are inconsistent with both yourself and reality.

For instance: My understanding is that some 70% of Americans are in favour of increased gun regulation.  Yet governments refuse to implement meaningful change.  Why is that?

The same goes for health care.  Many Americans find their health care system inferior and unfair compared to other countries' but your governments oppose moving towards the obviously-better.  How come?

Similarly, many think that America's hundreds of billions of dollars a year in defense spending is wasteful and illogical given current realities.  Yet it persists.  Why is that?

Politicians have essentially zero interest in citizens.  Their interests are attaining and maintaining visibility, financial reward and power.  That's why their prime loyalty is towards their financial contributors.   And, for better or for worse, the media.

You said that you were against income distribution, (SOCIALISM!  AGHHHhhh!) yet you apparently wish for financial support for COVID-affected business.

You think the government shouldn't pick winners and losers, yet now you want them to do exactly that.

It's been said here before, Alan.  "What's it gonna be?"

Investigation Finds Georgia Officials Decline to Prosecute or Correct the Double Voters They Catch

https://theohiostar.com/2020/12/15/as-the-u-s-senate-runoffs-approach-georgia-declines-prosecuting-the-double-voters-they-catch/

More than 1,700 Georgians were singled out for illegally casting two ballots in 2020 elections – including last month’s hotly contested presidential race -but their fraudulent votes weren’t canceled out, according to state election officials. And so far, none of the cheaters has been prosecuted, raising concerns about continued fraud as Georgia prepares to vote again in twin U.S. Senate runoff elections next month.

The majority of double voters were Democrats who cast an absentee ballot either by mail or drop box and also voted in person on Election Day, officials said, which is a felony under state law.

The highest share of offenders were from Fulton County, which includes Atlanta – many of whom were allowed to cast a second ballot by poll workers, officials said.

Hundreds of workers assigned to county poll sites were recruited and trained by the Democrat-run Georgia chapter of the ACLU and a minority-owned temp agency run by Democrat donors, according to documents obtained by RealClearInvestigations. Most of them were young and inexperienced.
