Do you have an external drive for your Mac?  You may need to consider moving more stuff off the boot drive at some point.

For example, my 1TB boot drive has only what is necessary on it.  Everything else goes on external drives.  That gives me 864GB free on the boot drive.

Yes, the speed of things has improved a bit, not a large amount.  particularly, when swapping the  view of images on the filmstrip has improved the most.

I do have the Catalog and the program on the primary hard drive and all the images on a separate external drive and this has worked well.

Yes, harddisks should not get fuller than ~70% of the effective available space if you want still sufficient speed.
