Title: Lr slowing down
Post by: mdijb on June 23, 2020, 06:06:29 pm
Out of the blue, LR has become very slow and unresponsive.  I have optimized the catalog and run Clean my Mac with no effect.

The only  thing that has changed is the release of the latest LR update which I have NOT installed--Is there a connection?

Most of the comments I have read are to the effect that the latest version is speedier and more responsive. I can't say I've noticed much difference, but it may be that I'm just unobservant.

On a PC I would open Task Manager to see what programs/processes are taking up processor time. Mac must have a similar tool.

I've been told, on the PC (which I don't use  ;) ) "Acronis True Image Protection" creates a problem for ACR in terms of speed and turning it off is a fix.
This version runs fine and as fast or a tad faster than the last on my Mac.

Since you're using "Clean My Mac" I'm going to assume you're running a Mac.   ;D

- What version of MacOS are you running?
- Have you looked at "Activity Monitor" to see what might be consuming the resources on your Mac?

Using MAC on Mohave.  What do I look for on the Acivity Monitor?

For starters:

- click on CPU at the top and click on "%CPU" to make sure it sorted for the biggest consumers of CPU
   - if you've got an app gobbling up CPU consider killing it or simply stopping it

- click on "Memory" - make sure its sorted for the biggest consumers of Memory at the top
   - if you've got an app gobbling up Memory consider killing it or simply stopping it

Last thing... make sure you've got sufficient drive space available on your Mac boot drive.  You can easily see that using "Disk Utility"

I hope this helps

Look at CPU usage too. See what else might be hogging processing power.

I checked the Activity monitor and LR and Photoshop are at the top of the list in each category with everything else using small amounts.

That's to be expected.  Both apps chew up a good amount of your computer resources.

They key is:

- How much of the CPU resources are being consumed?  What % of the CPU resources are available with those apps running?
- How much memory is available with those apps running?

In both cases look at the bottom of the Activity monitor for CPU and Memory to see where you're at.

How much space is available on your boot drive?

Attached are screenshots showing the Activity Monitors windows.  LR and Photoshop are running.

Does this help?

Those screen shots show a pretty healthy, normal Mac.

I'm stumped unless you've picked up some malware.

I'd check to see if it's a problem with the catalog.

Create a new one and test it
   if all seems good
Go back a few days/week or so before this happened and run one of your recent backup catalogs to see if it is OK

Good thought, Mike.

Beside recently optimizing the catalog I hope he has some recent backups of the catalog prior to the problems.

Just a check, is there enough free space on the disk(s)? Needs to be more than ~30%, else disk access speed drops progressively

I have a 1-TB drive with 60GB available.

Is this a problem?

I would say yes. When modern drives approach becoming "full", they can cause lots of issues, from slowdowns to outright data loss. Yours has considerably less than 10% free space available, so it's a leading suspect in this case. Try changing the situation to leave your drive with say, 50% free space to see if that helps.

Yes!!!  That's not enough free space.

Yes!!!  That's not enough free space.
Itís a critical problem if it is the primary internal drive where your operating system is running.

I have cleaned up the hard drive, moved files around and now have 260 GB instead of 60GB available.  Let's see  if that improves things.

Do you have an external drive for your Mac?  You may need to consider moving more stuff off the boot drive at some point.

For example, my 1TB boot drive has only what is necessary on it.  Everything else goes on external drives.  That gives me 864GB free on the boot drive.

Any improvement?

Yes, the speed of things has improved a bit, not a large amount.  particularly, when swapping the  view of images on the filmstrip has improved the most.

I do have the Catalog and the program on the primary hard drive and all the images on a separate external drive and this has worked well.

Yes, harddisks should not get fuller than ~70% of the effective available space if you want still sufficient speed.
