Solved: C1 connection Problem w/ Nikon Z7
« on: April 14, 2020, 04:34:22 pm »

Hi everyone, I can’t get one of my Z7s to connect to Capture One.  Feels like something simple, but it’s breaking my brain…

Normal Z7-1:
A. Camera powered off, plug into Mac, green indicator light on back of camera lights for <1s, camera shows up in C1.
B. Power on camera, C1 shows “No camera connected”, green camera light pulses for ~15s.
C. C1 shows all camera controls.
D. Power off camera, C1 shows, “No camera connected” for ~6s, then camera shows up again in C1.

Problem Z7-2:
A. Same as above.
B. As above, but camera light pulses for ~30s.
C. C1 shows “No camera connected”
D. Same as above.

Any ideas?

Both Z7s are on FW 3.0.
Mac-1 (Desktop) is on High Sierra 10.13.6
Mac-2 (MBP 16) is on Catalina 10.15.4, including the supplemental update from a few days ago.
C1 is v20.0.4 on both computers.
Trying multiple known good USB-C cables and adapters.
Both cameras connect to Mac-1 with no issues.

Edit 1: Connecting one camera at a time.
Edit 2: Downloaded Nikon Camera Control, both cameras work with this on the MBP (Mac-2).

Edit 3: Solved! It was the memory card in Z7-2, with 800 photos on it, taking longer to read than the one in Z7-1 w/ only 300 photos.

For future reference, I went through the items in this page to find the issue:

Are you trying to connect both camera's at the same time?

No, one at a time.

Ok then so it’s a process of elimination to find the problem.

Desktop/Laptop

Z1/Z2

Cable 1/Cable 2

Adapters are unknown at this point.

You don’t mention the model of desktop. Is USB A or USB C. The MBP 16 is all USB C obviously but us the desktop USB C as well?

Mike, thanks for looking through this - I appreciate it!

*I just downloaded Nikon Camera Control 2 to test, and both cameras work with it on the MBP (OP updated)*

Yes, MBP is all USB-C.  Desktop is a hackintosh, with USB-A connectors.  (5Gb/s - whatever the current USB3 name is for that.)  I think the difference between the USB-C Mac and a USB-A Mac can be eliminated since Nikon CC2 works with both cameras on the MBP.  Both cameras also worked with an older MBP with USB-A.

I'm disconnecting one camera, plugging in the next with the same cable.

I've also reset all settings on Z2, copied settings from Z1, started a new C1 session between cameras, restarted computer between cameras.

Is there an issue using C1 w/ 2 cameras of the same model?  C1 shows the model/SN/settings for each camera when they're turned off.  It's only when turning on Z2 that C1 doesn't see it.

C1 worked with both cameras on other computers, older OS though.  Maybe a C1-Catalina problem?

Sounds like a Catalina issue.

To recap:

Desktop + High Sierra Z7-1 and Z7-2 work.

MacBook Pro + Catalina Z7-1 works, Z7-2 doesn’t. Same cables.

Is Catalina retaining some camera ID which doesn’t match the second camera ID so it thinks it’s corrupted or something.

Do you remember which Z7 you attached first and if so is that the one that works?

Sounds like a Catalina issue.

I'm leaning more to Catalina+C1, since Nikon CC2 works w/ both cameras on the MBP.

It's a new machine, not sure how far back I can go in system versions if I were to wipe & reinstall.  I also haven't sent a ticket to C1 yet, trying to eliminate any possibilities of dumb moves on my part first.

Yes.

Mac OS System Report recognizes the individual serial numbers of the cameras, as does C1 while each camera is off.

Z7-1 first.  I've tried both orders in same session, restarting between, and separate sessions for each camera.

Well I’m glad it wasn’t anything wrong with the hardware.

I once had a problem with a friends MacBook and an USB A to USB C adapter not working correctly. That took a while to diagnose.
