Barbers used to be surgeons.
More accurately, they used to undertake surgical procedures.
And that is why surgeons in the UK drop the title "Dr" and revert to "Mr", "Miss" or "Mrs" (never met a Ms), usually on becoming a Fellow of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons. Going down to the badge-making sub-department in the hospital where I was then working and getting them to make me a new badge with "Mr" as the title, was a joyous moment. I think I still have it, somewhere.
