You are suggesting that we ban US citizens from entering the country, which is crazy and unconstitutional.  You're clutching at straws here.

He did not suggest that at all. He didn't even imply it.

This is just false.

No I am not. I'm suggesting a more strict quarantine process for those returning. Canada requires you to have a self isolation plan on entry and if you don't, you are housed in a hotel for 2 weeks. Letting 40k people come in, many I'm sure infected, just promotes community spread. Couple that with very low testing rates and you end up totally out of control.

Now that's just plain ridiculous. By definition, elective surgery is for situations that don't pose a serious health risk.

My sister in law had surgery for her cancer 2 weeks ago. My aunt had a brain clot that was operated on last week.

Elective surgeries are those that are truly elective like knee replacements that no doubt put the person in discomfort for a few months, but is not life threatening. Any surgery that is required to save lives are continuing.

McLennan, the forum maroon spews nonsense once again.  He simply can't handle the facts.  Maroon does not understand free enterprise and the loads of people beside the Trump campaign that sells swag.   They can buy it whereever they choose. I guess maroon has never bothered to see the number of vendor outside a Trump rally.  Nope, ya gotta remain oblivious to reality to be a good leftist as long as you have OMB virus.

Peter, delaying elective surgeries can lead to serious and dangerous situations. Maybe more so in Canada than in USA where the waiting times are normally shorter. If a cancer chemotherapy is postponed by a few weeks, that might not be not critical, but if it stretches to more than 6 months, that would be a death sentence. Similarly, a bad hip if not treated could lead to a fall and thus to serious complications and deferred diabetes consultation could result in an amputated leg.

If you don't believe the quoted numbers, you might want to read the referenced link in my previous post. Or the one below which addresses the US situation.

Quote
Elective surgery does not mean optional surgery. It simply means nonurgent, and what is truly nonurgent is not always so obvious. Gerard Doherty, the chair of the surgery department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, which began postponing elective surgeries on Friday, says surgical procedures can fall into one of three categories. About 25 percent of the surgeries performed at his hospital can be delayed without much harm. These might include joint replacements and bariatric surgeries for weight loss. Another 25 percent are for life-threatening emergencies that need to be treated right away: perforated bowels, serious heart problems, bones that have broken through the skin.

The last 50 percent are the tricky ones. These cases, Doherty says, have “some potential for harm to delay”; they might include cancer and problems in the blood vessels of the arms and legs.

Well then he, nor you, should have no reason to complain about those 40K people that came in unless you are in fact implying that we should have banned USA citizens.

Once again Peter, you are showing your lack of knowledge.

Not all elective surgeries are purely cosmetic; we are not talking about lasik eye surgery here.  Many cancer treatments are deemed elective, as are many other life preserving surgeries.

Banning is at one extreme...letting them in without any conditions is the other extreme. I don't think we are talking about either extreme here...but some measures in the middle.

They were asked to self quarantine, which is about as far as you can go with 40K.

Chez, once again you TDS is effecting your logic.

Yes, some cancer surgeries are elective and that is decided by the surgeons. Chemo therapy is not surgery and has nothing to do with taking up hospital beds, so those treatments continue as normal...my friend is on a weekly chemo treatment and did not skip a beat. I have not heard a single life preserving or threatening surgery being canceled, at least in my area.

Elective surgeries are those that are truly elective like knee replacements that no doubt put the person in discomfort for a few months, but is not life threatening. Any surgery that is required to save lives are continuing.

Maybe the situation in BC is better than in Ontario, Quebec and even UK.
For example, in Quebec, they recently re-classified mastectomy which is performed usually when the cancer cells get into the lymph nodes, into elective surgery.

Quote
Quebecers living with cancer are now living in fear of seeing their disease progress during the COVID-19 crisis. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) reported this alarming fact Monday. According to the CCS, many people with cancer are anxious due in particular to the postponement or cancellation of their treatments. Quebec Health Minister Danielle McCann said at a news conference on Monday that the decision to postpone or cancel treatment, such as a mastectomy, was not taken lightly.

Quote
Roisin Pelan is 38 and lives in Lancashire. She has incurable breast cancer and had been taking chemotherapy tablets every day. Every three months she also visits the hospital to receive the drug intravenously. Last month she was told her chemotherapy treatment would be stopped for 12 weeks. "It's terrifying they've stopped treatment that I know is keeping me alive," she says. "To have that taken away is just unbearable. How do we know it's only going to be 12 weeks? This pandemic could go on a lot longer."

Quote
Mark Shelton, from Solihull, has been treated at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital since he was diagnosed with metastatic malignant melanoma in 2015. His immunotherapy was suspended for a minimum of 12 weeks as resources are redirected to the coronavirus effort. The hospital trust said it was having to make "difficult decisions". "I'm going to miss three cycles [of treatment] because the resources are going towards helping coronavirus patients," Mr Shelton said.

Even knee and hip surgeries, if postponed by a year, could be life threatening for seniors who live alone. In Ontario, right now the waiting time to see an orthopedic surgeon just for the initial consultation is projected to be six months (you can't even book any appointments now), and then waiting for the actual surgery can add another six months or more, so we are talking about one year or longer postponements. Most patients need these surgeries not for mountain climbing or mogul skiing, but just to get to their supermarket or doctor.

Trump was decisive.  He shut down travel from China.  Biden and Democrats called him a xenophobe and racist for doing that.  So Biden would have done less.  So I'm voting for the person who was more decisive.  Trump.
People who commit suicide are decisive.

This Trump business is boring...

Much more fun now to watch Bolsonaro, he is a comedian also.

Boris returned to #10 yesterday, apparently with a better appreciation for the danger the virus is, and all softy towards the NHS.

No one complained about letting them in, no one implied not letting them in. Red herring.

With talk of the UK setting up a 14 day quarantine for all international arrivals, I'm hopeful that born-again Boris might be pursuing the apparently unthinkable policy of eradicating the virus.

If delaying a surgery can "lead to serious and dangerous situations" Then it is, BY DEFINITION, not elective. Is this hard to understand?? Sheesh!

He waited until it became clear that the virus was going to be a real killer so then he shut down the economy with governor's support.
I thought the governors shut down the economy with Trump's support.

But people are complaining.  They keep on pointing out Trump let in 40K USA citizens & Green-card holders after the ban to try and make it look like Trump did not go far enough with it. That is complaining, aka expressing dissatisfaction or annoyance about something.

Collectively we will have to excuse Lameson. Like his Orange Idol, his reading and spelling challenges prevent him from understanding the meaning of the "/s" tag.
