John, we had a choice between Trump and Hillary.  The country picked Trump.  We now have a choice between Trump and Biden.  That's it.  The rest is conversation.

Out of 330M people, that's the best you can do?

Biden or Trump.

Guess. Hint...who has a flock of sheeple approving every single move he does.

Hint 2:  He's making America great again...and again...and again...

It is the apparent choice, so far, until the formal result of the conventions.

Your taunts don’t add to the discussion.

Just published - an interesting in-depth interview with Prof Neil Ferguson, the British epidemiologist whose Covid-19 model precipitated the UK and US lockdowns.

The interview covers the Swedish and South Korean responses, and addresses the fallacy of the 'lock-up-the-elderly' approach:

Could you sum up what his conclusions are?  I don't have 36 minutes to spare.  I'm 75.

Apparently republican voters still like Trump.  Democrat voters like Biden.

Tweedledum and Tweedledee
    Agreed to have a battle;
For Tweedledum said Tweedledee
Had spoiled his nice new rattle.

Just then flew down a monstrous crow,
    As black as a tar-barrel;
Which frightened both the heroes so,
    They quite forgot their quarrel.

I want to say something about the media. Alan and Joe complain about it incessantly, and they're wrong about much of it, but not all of it. I worked in the news media for 25 years or so, at one small and two major newspapers, and I was also a reporter in the Army in the 60s. First off, there is no one thing you can call "media." The "social media" is dominated politically by right-wingers -- I can't even think of a left-wing social media guy, although I'm sure there are some. TV is a fairly even break nationally -- Fox conservative, CNN and MSNBC liberal, though given the rankings, overall the viewership probably tips toward conservative, as Fox rankings are higher than either of the other two. In terms of newspapers, there are three national papers -- the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. MOST OF THE NEWS in all three papers is non-political and quite straight-forward. Politically, the NYT and WAPO are liberal, the WSJ is conservative. All three papers have people of opposite political viewpoints writing columns.

But, here is where it's hard to take either Alan or Joe seriously -- Trump lies, openly and outrageously. Even Fox sometimes will call him on it. The WSJ does. And of course, the NYT, WAPO, CNN and MSNBC call him on it. But because they're liberal, and call him on it, doesn't mean that they're wrong or lying. The fact is, Trump does it all the time -- he's on any number of videos saying things that he later denies ever saying. It's not just about the virus, it'd about everything. He lies about golf, and it's thoroughly documented.

Does Joe Biden lie? I don't know, probably, but I haven't even paid that much attention to him yet. I'm sure Obama lied, the Bushes lied, we know Bill and Hillary Clinton lied as a matter of routine. As a guy who is moderately (very moderately) liberal, I have no problem saying that about either Obama or the Clintons. What baffles some of us (if I can speak for them) is how apparently intelligent people can defend everything that Trump says, when it's so obvious that he's a pathological liar. He lies about things that he doesn't even have to lie about.

Then there's the quality of the argument. I say Trump lies, and the answer is, "Well, Biden lies." That's not an answer, that's an evasion. Biden's not the President. If I say "Trump lies," I'd like just one of those big Trump supporters to say either, "No, he doesn't, and here's where you're wrong," or "Sure, he's a pathological liar, but I like him on his cultural and economic policies."

But they don't say that. They turn away from the obvious fact that Trump is a buffoon, and most often defend him with "fake news" or "the mainstream media lies." How the mainstream media can be lying when they show a video in which Trump says X, and then another one where he denied ever saying X, simply doesn't compute. And they do it all the time.

I have no problem with serious conservatives, and even tend to agree with them on economic and financial issues, though not so much on cultural issues. Trump isn't a conservative, he's a con man. The media wouldn't be doing its job if they simply didn't point that out.

IMHO.

When did you retire John?

In that article I posted, it said 2008 was the beginning of the media becoming concentrated and biased.  No offense, but if you retired prior to 2008, you personal experience is meaningless to the overall discussion.

And, Joe Biden does lie.  He lies all of the time.  That is why his past presidential campaign went up in smoke.  He has lied this campaign cyclce, many times, but the media does not call him out on it.  They wont even investigate a sexual assault allegation against him that is much more credibly than Blasey Ford's.  This is an obvious bias, and the fact that you said it should not be investigated shows you too are biased.

I do have to applaud AOC for saying that it should be talked about.  After she said this, every single Dem I knew admonished her for it on social with comments like, "do you want Trump to win?"  You guys act like you have a greater amount of integrity, but you dont.  Instead of doing what you said we should during the Kavanaught hearings, believe all women, you are going  out of your way to ignore Tara Reid.

Last, let me say that I do not defend everything Trump says.  He is not the smartest person on the planet.  But he is a hell of lot smarter, or should I say right more often, then those whom have been power for the last 30 years, including good Ol' Joe Biden.  So, I'd still take Trump over Biden any day.

Precisely.  It's not like the Dems picked the brightest apple.

As I have said before, if Klobuchar had won, you would probably be looking at Trump loosing.  However, you guys decided to ignore the winner right under your noses and go with sleep Joe Biden.  And I am pretty sure Biden will look over Klobuchar just so he can check the black box with his VP, which will do nothing but be a nod to white woke liberals who would have already voted for him anyway.

We're all going to get this anyway, that's a fact.

It's 3 times more contagious then the flu and we will not have a vaccine for at least 18 months, if ever.  There is no cure to the common cold and the common cold is a corona virus.  It does not sound too promising.

We have to get on with life eventually, and we will all be doing the Swedish options when that happens.  I'd rather just accept that and get on with life.

Trump has street smarts which is necessary when you have to deal with the Xi's and Kim's of the world.  He's also took on, as you know Joe, the entire Republican establishment and beat them all.  Then he went on to take on the Clinton machine and beat it.  Intellectualism is fine in an ivory tower.  But not when you have to run America.  That's why Biden is so dangerous. He's past his prime and doesn;t have the moxie.  He's not up to it. Sanders actually would have been better.  He's tough.    We need a street fighter at the helm to protect the country. The more other leaders and foreigners don't like him, the better I know he's doing.

Precisely.  It's not like the Dems picked the brightest apple.

Well most of them picked a different apple.
That is one of the many strange things for onlookers about US politics.

For three years there is no opposition figurehead, then a year out they start looking for one.
Then there are three or so with supporters for each.
Then six months out they have one and the supporters for the others are supposed to all get behind him/her and cheer.
Then this guy that most people have never heard of is supposed to win against a guy that has been in the job for 4 years.
So the sitting guy usually gets elected again, unless he is really bad.

Does that about sum it up?

You first need to be a grown up adult having his/her ego in check.

You appear to have a playstation view of the world where strategic diplomacy is handled as a series of kungfu fights but the only place where things happen that way is in your imagination.

What is needed to deal with Xi and Kim is first an ability to listen to experts and to take in their advice in the context of a sound understanding of the global stakes of the world. An understanding that requires studying because the world is complex even if you’d prefer it to be simple.

Trump doesn’t have any of that. His understanding is limited to one stupidely basic idea « I’ll just act as I feel (not think) is right and bully my counterpart to accept my position ». It works sometimes in some situations. You can score apparent short term wins.

But why would you need to keep deforming reality time and again if it were solid?

The claim that every politicians lie and that it’s therefore ok for Trump also is idiotic because it overlooks the obvious fact that degree matters a lot. Not all things can be told to the public all the time. This can be debated but isn’t unreasonable. But here it’s more about lying all the time. Mostly lying to you, his supporters. On life and death matters.

Trump is like those financial pyramidal scams where running away upwards is the only way to keep the ball rolling. And you blindly keep supporting that.

Cheers,
Bernard

No personal attacks, please.

I played the nice and polite game to no avail. I can be respond in similar measure too.
Here, Slobodan can not let go that I can spend my time how I want to and the fact that I'm a physician doesn't mean I don't have free time. If I was confirming what he said I'm sure this wouldn't have bothered him the least.

No problem.

Ok, on the 'shielding' strategy ('lock up the elderly' in Joe-speak), Ferguson argues that no country has demonstrated that this is even possible. (This was the cornerstone of the Swedish approach, and they have admitted they failed - Covid has run rife through their care-homes.)

Ferguson points out that whilst a healthy, wealthy, 85-year-old can successfully self-isolate, the majority of elderly are neither healthy nor wealthy, and need regular interactions with younger members of society (doctors, nurses, delivery drivers etc). So letting the virus rip amongst the younger generation will inevitably lead to many deaths in the elderly population.

Instead he advocates for the South Korean approach, which first involves bringing the number of cases right down (which in Western countries will entail a prolonged lockdown), and then requires testing, tracking and isolating to quell new outbreaks as they arise.
