Don't forget water turning to blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness and the killing of firstborn children.

Aw man, not locusts.

We wont know this for at least a year John, until after we can start tallying up the increases in suicides, drug overdoses, deaths due to spousal abuse, etc. from the other Scandinavian countries.

You guys keep on forgetting about this, and insist on just writing off those deaths as "oh they were just crazy people."

And many senseless murders. A gunman in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia killed today at least 13 people, including a policewoman, during a 12-hour rampage, in the worst act of mass murder in Canada in the last 30 years. What is know at this time, that the gunman operated a denture clinic which was closed due to the C-19 epidemic.

From the site you reference:

Sweden’s unusual approach to fighting the coronavirus pandemic is starting to yield results, according to the country’s top epidemiologist.
Anders Tegnell, the architect behind Sweden’s relatively relaxed response to Covid-19, told local media the latest figures on infection rates and fatalities indicate the situation is starting to stabilize.

Gasp! He's discovered he was correct!

On the Worldometer statistics site, the Covid-19 "countries" page, the most comparable European country to Sweden in number of cases is Austria. Austria has a population of about 9 million, Sweden about 10. Austria had 14,749 confirmed cases, Sweden had 14,385. Austria had 452 deaths, Sweden had...1,540.

I didn't choose a Scandinavian country to compare to Sweden, because it would have been unfair. As almost all sites say, the other Scandinavian counties have far few cases and deaths than Sweden.

I was listening to this doctor researcher.  He said that allowing a country to herd immunize even at the cost of additional deaths like we might be seeing in Sweden, will save more people in the long run and prevent more damage to the economy. The whole point of lowering the curve was to make sure we didn't overrun hospital capability with too many cases at one point.  Apparently we were successful at that for the most part.  However, continued isolation will just put off the inevitable - destruction of the economy and more deaths due to re-infection.  If the younger people who can survive the disease go out and work and get it they will survive while old farts like me isolate.  Then when the community reaches a certain percentage of already infected, herd immunity, the disease can't spread beyond that point.  Older people will then be protected naturally.  Meanwhile, the country is working preventing all the social and medical ills created by a damaged economy.

If Sweden's plan works that doesn't mean it can be applied elsewhere. First, they had a clear plan with a rationale and seems most were on board. Second, the population has to buy in and do their share.

The main part of the plan that is different is that they allowed a certain amount of interaction among the populace.  If the doctor researcher is right, the plan doesn't have to be so tight rigid.   After all, the whole point is to allow the virus to spread through the population that is below old age to create herd immunity.  The younger will mainly survive.  So you want to have transmission between people.  Isolation and staying home are just for old folks like me.

Sorry to hear about this.  There are nut jobs in every country.  Considering he spent lot of time dressing up a car to look exactly like a police cruiser, lights and all, this had to be planned for quite awhile.  So I suspect it didn't have anything to do with the virus.  I guess we'll find out soon.

The economic problems could have raised the level of his frustration, and since he was not making dentures, he had plenty of time to dress up his car and prepare for the action.
That's in the country which bans guns. The shooting happened on the April 19th anniversary of the Oklahoma bombing in 1995.

It's not socialist.  As a matter of fact, the Swedish PM has repeatably ask Bernie to stop say they are socialist and have talk about how adopting market based solutions lead to their current prosperity.  You have some pretty bad information if you think this.

Sweden may not consider itself socialist in relation to its neighbours or to the world. But, by the way the word is used in US, they are.

Nope. By the way Bernie Sanders uses it, they are.

Well, it's not easy to shoot someone from acceptable social distance.

Well, the way some people want it, for "acceptable" you'd need a sniper ;)

I know some on here will say, "well they did publish a correction."  If you are thinking that, it's a bull shit excuse.  The fake story is seen by millions whereas the correction is only seen by thousands.  This is why we call the mainstream media fake news and why more and more people are loosing trust in them.

As Joe rightly predicted (I think it was Joe), people are going to rebel against totalitarian rights grab across the world (it ain't just the "deporables" in the States).

Sorry, WaPo is beyond paywall for me, so just a screen shot:

But that is a false dichotomy, Will. The other side of the compassion is not greed, but everyday life for billions. There are millions of people that if they don't work today, they won't be eating today. I am glad you recovered after ten years, but would anyone waste ten years of their life? The crisis of 2008 left me seven years without a full time work in my profession, from which I never recovered, at my age (the proverbial gap in your resume, especially close to retirement). The economy is not just corporations, and definitely not just greed. Now, it is up to each of us to determine the balance of "money is not everything" vs. providing for a decent living.

My daughter secured a well-paid internship with a very reputable global company in Miami (paid internships are still rare). She worked very hard to get it (it wasn't via her school), and was very proud of her success. This isn't just about some pocket money for her summer fun. Schools kick them out over the summer, so she would have to rent an apartment and pay for her food. Not everyone has mom and dad to go back to over the summer. Also, a well executed internship often leads to a job offer upon graduation. That is all gone now. It is really a big question if the generation of college graduates in 2021 will be able to find a job. She was inconsolably crying the whole day when she got the message.

I will tell you that those ten years were not a waste... we lived in a small simplex on a very small budget. My wife and I were lucky enough to find jobs quickly so we were able to build ourselves back up - but, during those ten years we, as a family, became stronger. I certainly learned about humility - before that I though I was bullet-proof. I look back on those years as very important "school fees".

As for your daughter, I have no doubt that she will land on her feet and that this will also be "school fees" - she sounds like a smart young lady. (She obviously inherited that from her mother!)  :D

Now take a look at this and then show me where these guys have corrected all their "errors". I especially like the "Harvard Guy".
