Funny about her: at the "biggest inauguration ever" she wore blue, I think, and looked a zillion dollars of class and style but today, in India, she wore what looked like a white jumpsuit - 'twas hard to tell - and the most terrible, unflattering, stand-out sash/belt you could imagine. Just shows you what can happen to you with prolonged exposure to the wrong influences...
Whilst T and M (the Indian M) were mutually self-congratulating, Delhi was burning with protests about the radical Hindu movement that is backing new legislation designed to disenfranchise thousands of Indian Moslems (anyone reminded of Israel here?) and the "Trump go home" placards were also out, but by the communists, this time. Did your US news services show you that? Did any of them tell you that Modi's party is the modern incarnation of the same one that spawned the guy who murdered Mahatma Gandhi?
Mr T made his speech about standing shoulder to shoulder with his new best friend - much as he described, at one time or another, China and NK as well as France, and managed both to knock Pakistan but still not enough to screw the little remaining connection he has with it. Oh, all of this at the same time as applying trade sanctions to India amid continuing arguments.
Truth is, such visits achieve two things: for both men, they distract from domestic issues at the right time (helps having about six million Indians living in the US) and also try to cement mutual fences against old new best friend China, which has its borders uncomfortably close to India, as has Pakistan, too. But India still has its own ties with China, so following that should beome labyrinthian as things progress. Funny how a leader, inexorably leading his country from being the worlds largest non-sectarian democracy into a theocracy, can be embraced like that by the supposedly greatest free country in the world.
There is nothing as crazy as politics.
