Lightroom to Capture One concerns
« on: February 07, 2020, 01:44:34 pm »

I am a Fuji X system user. If I make the switch to Capture One I need a way to organize my images, to print and to make photo books. I am most concerned with the printing function. Is there a easy answer to these concerns.

I'd recommend downloading the trial and taking it for a spin as there's nothing like getting your hands dirty to get a feel for a new tool.  There are a lot of good resources over at learn.captureone.com that can help you evaluate it for your needs. There's not an explicit "Book" module equivalent in CaptureOne. It does have built-in print and soft proofing capabilities with the flexibility to use third party print tools easily if you'd like to do so (I use Qimage, for example). It's got a variety of organizational capabilities. You'll start to get familiar with the concept of catalogs (similar to LR) and sessions from an organizational perspective. It's got a lot of fairly sophisticated metadata management functions and the like too.

A quick written overview on LR and C1 differences: https://blog.captureone.com/step-by-step-guide-from-lightroom-to-capture-one/

There's at least one webinar that talks you through many of those differences as well.

https://learn.captureone.com/webinars/migrating-from-lr-to-capture-one/

There can definitely be some level of mind shift moving from one to another as C1 wasn't designed to imitate LR, for the most part, though there are obviously similarities. Best to get it, try it and explore it.

I'd add that it would be a good idea to look at the learning videos on C1 20 - the latest - after you've looked at the above webinar as there are a few notable differences in the UI and functions with the new version (HDR is different for example, and scrollable tool panels too).

Cheers,
Ray

Import and organising are similar to LR.
I switched because of the vastly superior raw conversion in C1. It took a while to arrange the interface to suit my workflow, learn the terminology and personalise the shortcuts.
I'm still learning the subtleties of the software but the results have been worth it.
I can't speak for C1 20, but I think LR is still the best printing software in terms of the balance between quality and ease of use. I still have my own copy of LR 6 and just import the print folder into LR for each shoot.

I prefer to use the best tools for the task at hand. That means that I use Capture One Pro for the initial Raw conversion process and activities that are associated with that, and for printing I use Qimage.

I may also use additional tools in postprocessing, depending on the required end result. Affinity Photo or Photoshop for image editing, and using plugins for e.g. noise reduction, tone mapping, etc. For significant upscaling Topaz Gigapixel AI is hard to beat. Panostitching (with PTGUI Pro) or Focusstacking (with Helicon Focus), create much better results than with the built inabilities of the Photo-editors.

IMHO, using specialist tools for specialist tasks may be slightly less convenient, but it can make quite a difference in the resulting image quality.

Yes, the Binartem link offers a slightly more targeted for printing application (Qimage One) for multiple platforms. The Qimage Ultimate (for Windows only, unless one uses Parallels or such on a Mac) also offers Raw conversion and Editing, in addition to printing capabilities. They are from the same author.

I don't have first hand experience with that printer, but since Qimage uses the printer's driver in a dialog with the driver, I have to assume that it does. Maybe Ernst Dinkla will chime in, I believe he has experience with that printer. A long time ago it was reported that the printer driver had a tendency to reset its settings (nothing to do with Qimage), but things may have improved over the years.

Cheers,
Bart

Hi Bart, Im MacOS only..do you know if the printing capability of Qimage One and Qimage Ultimate are the same? I do my raw conversion in Capture One and editing in PS/Affinity: is there any reason to go for the ultimate (and force need to run parallels too) in your opinion?
Thanks

Hi Brandon,

No, I don't think you will gain much. The editing capabilities of Ultimate are not as extensive as those in Photoshop or Affinity Photo, so Ultimate won't buy you any benefits. For printing though, any of the Qimage versions will do a better job than the Photo Editors can.

Cheers,
Bart
