Farm memorial
« on: December 17, 2019, 08:04:37 am »

I have been asked to photograph a memorial of a farmer killed on his farm. His brother wants a print for his home in Perth. I think the image and concept a little depressing and am trying to sell him on a general landscape of the very beautiful farm instead. Anyway here is the image of the memorial.

I would prefer this to go on a wall. From the same farm

The second image is a beauty.

The second is fine work, Martin. This kind of thing is the reason I stopped doing professional work very shortly after I started. I want to be the one to decide what I'll shoot.

I'd be inclined to darken the bright foreground grasses a bit, but you've caught the memorial in the light beautifully. Like you, I prefer the second image; but it's going to hang on his wall, not ours.

I agree Jeremy that the bright grasses may be a bit distracting. It’s a bit of a rough conversion on a laptop and isn’t fully resolved. I think I have them convinced now that the memorial image isn’t the way to go. Although it may be supplied in a smaller size to go in a home office or something.

Anyway I’m here for another three full days and I’m loving the photography. I have my partner with me and our three dogs. Tomorrow rain is predicted so that could be interesting as well. Playing with a few new items of equipment which has also been fun.

Martin, do you have the memorial shot in color?

Martin, do you have the memorial shot in color?

Sure. It’s a standard raw digital file. I generally decide before I press the shutter button if it’s going to be colour or B&W and this one was B&W. I have a decent pano in colour though. I wouldn’t put that up on my wall either.

The memorial shot is well-executed and powerful. No need to sell him postcards.

The memorial shot is nicely done, so if that is his preference, let him have it.
The other shots are indeed gorgeous, and I would certainly show him those, too, but then let him have the one (or more?) he picks.

Though the subsequent photos are quite lovely of the place, the original photo, also nicely created, will probably have more sentimental meaning to the farmer's brother. Sometimes the literal is the preference of the client so one must deliver or be able to sell them on another concept.

Jeremy

What about using a square composition keeping as much of the left hand side as possible with the sun lit monument and immediate area ?

I also found the bright grasses distracting from the monument.

I was heading out to shoot in the dark but a huge storm has rolled in. I’m not about to stand up on those rocky ridges with all the lightning about. Getting wet is one thing.

Thank you all very much for the input. I will supply the brother any image he can live with. I won’t show him anything I consider bad but if he is happy with the black and white I will process it more carefully at home and he is welcome to it.

The plan is I will supply a file and a colour proof he can then print in Australia. Anyone have any advice on where to get good printing done in Perth?

Sorry if I’m boring you all. One more. Shot this morning as a storm was clearing.

This last one is very nice, too.
But probably not for the farmer's brother.
