Sandhill Crane
« on: November 29, 2018, 08:38:01 am »

I have the same problem Hans had with his museum wall picture. This certainly doesn't belong in the street section, so it must belong in landscape.

Or perhaps: "Genre-free?"

Nice image.

Haha Russ and a nice crane shot nevertheless. I have tons of crane shots but I won't put them into landscape although there are many shot within a landscape :) Maybe I'm now tempted given you made the first move.

Plunge ahead, Hans. With our new genres the sky's the limit, as I just demonstrated.

Thanks Russ for the permission. I will keep it light in the beginning. Here is one with cranes flying over the cold and misty landscape early in the morning. It was shot April 4th 2008 with my old and sold Canon 500 f/4L IS lens on the Canon 1Ds III camera.

Here is another one shot long time ago in September 2009 and also with the Canon 500 F/4L IS lens.

Appears that way, Jeremy. Most of the stuff posted in Street Showcase under "On the Streets: an open image sharing thread" should have gone into "User Critiques." There's a bunch of other stuff in Street Showcase that doesn't really belong there. Looks as if it's now Katy bar the door for any "showcase" supposedly devoted to a specific genre. I'm afraid Street Showcase is the reason, and I'm afraid it's my fault because I pushed for a Street Showcase. I've had roughly 65 years exposure to the street genre, and I imagined other serious photographers knew the genre well enough to understand what it's meant to be. Just shows how wrong one can be. I'd love to see Street Showcase disappear so people can dump their pictures with streets in them into User Critiques. I'm afraid Street Showcase is exacerbating the confusion about the street photography genre that seems to grow with time.

You seem to have very definite ideas of what is and isn't street. Perhaps you could explain at some length your definition so people will know where you are coming from. Or maybe point us to some reference source you agree with.

Fab, you're the new guy on the block, so you evidently haven't read this: https://luminous-landscape.com/on-street-photography/

I had read it. I just found it pretty vague. Street could be almost anything according to your description. The only two stated criteria are that the photograph be unposed and that there be a story, even if hidden. Covers a lot of ground. Provides little guidance.

Beautiful shots Hans.

I think we are all civilized around here, so I really don't understand all this obsession with categorizing the photos. Ultimately, it is up to the website owners/moderators to decide where to pigeon-hole photos, and whether further forums are required.

Hi Fab, For a guy who evidently does only static landscape and structural photography you seem to have a sudden, vital interest in street photography. Why don't you grab a camera, get out there, and try it. You might like it. It's scary at first because there are people out there and you're shooting pictures of them. But considering what appears to be your active interest, in the long run you might find it deeply satisfying.

All of my images are unposed and tell a story, so, as far as I can tell, based on your criteria, I am already doing street photography. And most are poems to boot.

Absolutely. None of those buildings or pavements or walls are posing. I don't see a single human in any of the pictures on your web. Maybe you could post a couple here on LuLa.

Is a human being present a criteria for a photograph to qualify as street? I don't remember seeing that in your article.
