Terra Nudum the Book
« on: August 11, 2018, 10:06:32 pm »

With more than a decade of work, I'm glad to announce the Kickstarter for my wife and I's book Terra Nudum is live.

Terra Nudum on Kickstarter

This is what I do when I'm not helping people with medium format camera questions, dreaming up new systems for museums and libraries, or arguing on forums. All shot on Phase One cameras, of course :).

Your project looks very interesting! I wish you well with it.

My Latin is a bit rusty these days, but shouldn't your title be 'Terra Nuda'?

Congrats, Doug. Quite beautiful!

Thanks Eric. That's very kind!

Congratulations Doug!

Thanks! I'm very glad to have this project meet some milestone. Even if the project doesn't get funded the process alone in trying was worth.

Congrats Doug. Beautiful images.

I so appreciate the kind words. Especially from such an accomplished landscape shooter!

Well, you know what they say, "Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes".  ;)

Or am I getting that confused with "Clamo, clamatis, omnes clamamus pro glace lactis"?

Definitely the latter. I can offer pistachio or melon at the moment, both nice.

I found this in wiki "In poetry, -um may be substituted for -ōrum as the genitive plural ending."
So maybe Terra Nudorum got compacted into Terra Nudum. Or maybe it's just something we don't get ;)

Here we go: Nitpickers' Corner is now open for business (may I be president?).

It will have to be a feminine genitive plural, -arum. Terra nudarum. Or does Doug have some photos of blokes as well? In which case, everything is fine. It's poetry.

Nitpickers' Corner is now closed.

A few.

When I started this series it was an entirely aesthetic endeavor: the body is a thing of beauty. Accordingly the shoots often included male models, especially ones with athletic or body-builder physiques. I'm straight, but find something inherently visually interesting about the sharp edges and curves of a body-builder (of either gender).

Then my wife started working with me on the series and her eye for poses and for working with the models and engaging more of a two-way dialogue and collaborative-with-the-models process. That really changed the nature of the work. Models started reacting emotionally to seeing the resulting images, and sharing their struggles with maintaining a positive self-image and finding some very small improvement or at least inspiration to revise that self-image by participating in the series. That reaction was nearly exclusive to the female participants and really resonated with my wife and I. As a result we've used fewer and fewer men, but a wider swath of women.

We may return to male models at some point, but for now the gender of the models is tied up in the message of the art.

Doug,

Have P1 fund this endeavour and send me a signed print showing some females.

I understand that you want validation as a photographer, but I believe that a larger offset print run will probably provide decent quality at such a low price that P1 will be able to give the things away - just as Hassy did with its magazine.

Of course you'll have to shoot at least one more image, such as an advertorial showing a young lady creative sinuously cradling a well endowed camera, but I think you can take one for the team :)

Why are we talking so much about Phase here? This is supposed to be all about Doug!
Let's not hijack the thread about the Doug Photographer brand!

Hi,

I would suggest that we should look at Doug's images as a work of art.

I would suggest that Phase One sponsoring the project my be a great idea, as their equipment was used.

Just to say, the images Doug posted are great work of art.

Best regards
Erik
