Bournemouth pier in the mist
« on: February 03, 2017, 03:08:44 pm »

Just a couple of shots from earlier in the week - Bournemouth pier, south coast of the UK.  I thought I knew which one I preferred but now I'm not so sure ;)  Any comments gratefully received.

Nice shots. I like the 2nd (#3) best. The extra wave shape in the foreground gives it something extra.

They are both excellent, but I agree with Pieter: The second is best.

I think I prefer the 1st... the bright light give it a slight ominous feeling for me, a little like something from a 80s horror movie and the bridge pulls you in :)

Fine images. The burning of the borders could have been more subtle, but this is a quibble.

Very nice that first image, subject, color, and tonality. The subject is strongly directional and leading to point...that really bright wash of water (moving laterally) in foreground of the second image just clutters the frame and takes attention away from pier and its terminus - making it not nearly as strong a composition

I prefer the first. I would try to tone down the bright bar of light a little, though: it draws the eye and isn't in keeping with the muted tones of the rest of the shot. I'm not suggesting getting rid of it, of course, just dropping the brightness a little.

Both are fine images and the processing is just right.

Thanks all for your comments and compliments.  It's an interesting split of opinions.  I initially processed the first one, then went back and flashed the same settings over some other shots from the same shoot that hadn't caught my eye so much, and the second one grew on me quite a lot.

I think I would choose either for display/print depending on what it was going together with.

I wouldn't say the processing is 100 % yet - would do a little more work on them - including maybe darkening the bright neon sign (it's already been desaturated in Lightroom as it had red stuff in it!), although it doesn't bother me too much.  I just hate going out to Photoshop just for that!

Thanks Rajan.  Yes, I'd probably agree with you.  I find it looks right viewed full size, but in thumbnail form looks too drastic.  Some more fiddling to be done :)

Hard to choose: they are both very fine.

#1 for me, much more "elegant" and to the point. I like the bright light, it draws the attention, of course, but since it is at the end of the leading lines, works great.

Very batman-esque! I like #2 best but both are fantastic.
