Who did you buy from? What was his/her posting history?

I have only bought once from a reputable poster and the experience was great.

My feeling is that dealings btwn established forum members at LL are very reliable.

Cheers,
Bernard

Have you contacted the seller to find out if there are any problems?

I have purchased few times without problems even quite expensive lenses.
If you have paid via paypal you can open dispute and they will refund you back the money paid.

I've never had any problems buying equipment via the internet, never LL but various other sites.

My rule has always been to communicate a few times with the seller before the deal and see if I get a "good feeling" based on his responses. In cases where the seller is hesitant to provide details or communicates haphazardly I usually drop the deal. No guarantee of course but so far this has served me well.

Have you taken any steps to contact the seller and try to work out if it's a genuine seller and something went wrong or that you have been scammed?

I think forums should have some connection between usernames and real names.  I have no qualms with people knowing my name.  I especially like seeing people have their websites connected to their username. I buy and sell a ton across numerous forums.

I usually verify real identity of the person before transacting, whether I'm buying or selling. It's also not a good idea of cutting the corners to avoid 3% PayPal Fee, unless you know the person.

I never had a problem so far, but you never know when your luck is going to betray.

Without more information about the alleged transaction, it is hard to speculate.

Have never had problems on LuLa or GetDPI.  I go through and verify buyers though, and if they are paying with a personal check I have them understand I either need to cash it or have it completely clear.

About the worst thing selling / buying on here was figuring out how to get a Tech cam successfully shipped to Bernard in Japan.  That took a few extra days!

I purchased a lens via this website within the last week and received it yesterday. I won't mention the seller because I don't know the protocol here but he was pleasant to deal with and I'm pleased with the transaction. Getting burned is always possible; it takes effort to be a buyer of expensive gear via a forum.

I would contact the LL main people. If someone is using the site to steal, they should have an I.P address and trace the person or city they come from. It almost sounds like you set your self to get ripped off. Always use paypal and understand who you are buying from. Not posting a name or the for sale ad is also very strange on your behalf.

So far I have not had any problems of being ripped off. However, I have come across people who tried to scam me. I was taken off guard because it was a reputable username, but it appears their username was hacked.

Luckily in my case it was comically easy to figure out they were a scammer. I find that most scammers are extremely un-knowledgeable about what ever it is they are trying to "Sell". I usually ask some "trick" questions like "Is the image stabilization working on the lens" when talking about a mamiya RZ67 lens, or "How good is the tire pressure and power steering on the camera?". Somehow this stuff goes right over these scammers heads.

EBAY  JUST  SENDS YOU TO PAYPAL  AND  THE SELLER  DOES NOT RESPOND

Sad story.

First time I hear about this on LL.

Personally, I had (multiple) great experiences in selling / buying gear.

I never had any issues and i sold expensive items like IQ160 back etc. At first i didn't feel comfortable with such little security but
the experience over time showed good quality members on LULA. I hope you can sort out your sale. Good luck
