Olympus E-M1 II Capture Pro rolling shutter
« on: November 20, 2016, 05:10:17 pm »

Olympus claims to have improved rolling shutter on the Olympus E-M1 II. While someone accurately measures its sensor readout, I have assumed it to be (al least) 1/60s since the camera has a 60fps electronic shutter mode.

Will rolling shutter invalidate using Capture Pro, and electronic shutter in general, with fast moving subjects?. I have done a simulation to estimate how much it can affect: tennis!. The capture was done at 1/60s. Since the tennis racket spreads over ~1/3 of the sensor's vertical size, the rolling shutter effect will contain deformations spreading over 1/180s:

Any thoughts about this being or not fast enough?. For being a linear subject a tennis racket is a hard test for RS.

Preliminary reports are that it should be capable of stopping most motion, and exhibit minimal rolling shutter effects.

We'll have to wait until people are really using the camera to figure out its limits.

1/60s since the camera has a 60fps electronic shutter mode.[/img]
it is technically possible to start exposing the next frame before the current frame exposure is over in such mode... so it is possible that full frame readout is in 1/60 but also possible that it is not... so you can have 1/30 and simply expose for 2 frames at once (reading out 2 from different rows, from 2 different sequential frames, at once), no ?

Perhaps, but doesn't seem to be the case as the 1/60 figure appears to be accurate. At last some guy spent five seconds shooting at a neon light using electronic shutter. He did it for the E-M1, PEN-F and E-M5 II too. Here are the results:

European AC works at 50Hz so the interval between each pair of bands corresponds to 1/100 s (a semicycle):

So the E-M1 II is 4 times faster than the E-M1 and hence much less prone to suffer rolling shutter as Olympus claims.

Did you mean to include this one in your post?
