Canon Imageprograf Pro-1000 input resolution & 16bit printing

I think I tried all the media I have in settings and all combinations and was not able to achieve combination that enables custom quality setting 1.

Any updates or new information on this you guys have to share? I’m particularly curious about the differences noted between OEM media types and custom media types with regards to perceived sharpness /dpi.

I recently tested the Pro1000 on Windows 10 x64.

The drivers, regular or XPS, do not print 16 bits directly. I have not tested PSP.

Here is a naive question that I could not find the answer to because the Canon manual is quite sparse on information.  I know the native resolution is 300/600 depending on your image.  I print from LR and I know how to set the resolution, however, I come to this printer from the Epson 3880 where resolution was also set in the printer driver.  I've gone through all the possible Canon driver settings and don't see anywhere that one sets the resolution.  Does the printer automatically accept what LR sends it in terms of resolution as long as one does not exceed 600?  I'm getting ready to print out some high resolution 13x19 prints and want to make sure that if I send 600ppi to the printer that won't cause any issues.

I send all my images from Lightroom to my Pro-1000 at 600 ppi (set in Print Resolution, scaling done by LR) when my image has more than 300 ppi to offer. Works well. I upsample to just 300 ppi if image is lower than 300 ppi. Also works well.

I could wish for grain added in LR to be applied _after_ upsampling for print, but not so.

That's what I'm planning on doing.  I was used to the Epson 3880 where you had to interact with the print driver.  I don't think that is the case with the Canon

A few months ago I tested the Pro1000 on Win 10 x64 using PSP and XPS as well as just the XPS driver directly. It prints 8 bits per channel.
Version of PSP is 2.2.3

How to tell for sure:

1. Using Excel or a text editor, Create a patch set with the following RGB values:
[220.00 220.00 220.00]
[220.33 220.33 220.33]
[220.67 220.67 220.67]
[221.00 221.00 221.00]
[221.33 221.33 221.33]
[221.67 221.67 221.67]
[222.00 222.00 222.00]

2. Duplicate it at least 10 times

3. Import it into Patchtool and generate a 16 bit tif image profiling target for I1Pro 2

4. Assign it to ProPhoto RGB or just keep unmanaged.

5. Scan it in and save the scan as a CGATs file

Load it in excel and sort the rgb values so the duplicates are all grouped. Average each group and plot the L*

A 16 bit print path will plot the L* values along a fairly straight line
A 8 bit patch will stairstep every 3 groups.

And here's a workaround. Use the 8 bit dither option in Photoshop on 16 bit tif tiles. The next plot is from my Epson 9800 using the standard 8 bit driver.

What do you do when the original image has more than 600 ppi?  Sometimes I have large files from stitched panoramas.
