C1 front, middle, and back
« on: February 29, 2016, 07:25:30 am »

If you think of DAM (catalog functions) as the front, RAW demosaicing and adjustments as the middle, and output as the back, I find that C1 wins in the middle, works in the back, and is barely manageable in the front.

For the most part, output processing is fine. It's the conveniences (or lack thereof) that drag printing down. No printer/paper/ink/paper size presets, in particular.

But it's the DAM end of things that is the most frustrating. But I do see PO slowing moving C1 forward in that regard. Right now, C1 sorely needs:
Image stacking in all views (not just variant stacking in some views)
A simple way to delete an image from the catalog and the disk from within an album
Some control of metadata displayed with the thumbnails

And I'd sure like:
   Flags for variants
   Renaming of color tags
   Aspect ratio metadata (2x3, 4x5, 11x17, etc.)

I won't go into the things that apply everywhere, such as memory leaks and the many reported bugs.

Has anyone found some good "tricks" to get by the DAM deficiencies while PO works to improve the DAM?

Try John Beadsworth's Open Directly. It will allow you to use LR as the database yet send a raw file to Capture One.

Does it round trip the file such that I can reopen it in Capture One and change past adjustments?

I believe it creates a subfolder that will allow that but I would send John an email to confirm.

As long as you're using sessions - yes.
The 'round trip' is based on an exported file which is imported/synced into the Lr database. The variants and originals stay the same with all C1 adjustments intact in their respective C1 subfolder(s)
See this thread .. http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=107350.0

Dead simple but easier to try it rather than write about it.
