Associating people who are grammar fuss-budgets with a regime that murdered millions seems wrong.

The Nazi regime was without a doubt a blight upon humanity. You are right Peter.

I think the inspiration for the term "Grammar Nazi" was not directly the original Nasty Nazis, but rather the character on the Seinfeld TV program known as the Soup Nazi, who insisted that everybody follow his rules to the letter.

Entertaining though the discussion of the term grammar nazi might be, the problem with the original joke is that it confuses a spelling mistake with a grammatical error.

I just didn't understand the term in that context.
As with many catchwords, it can have different meanings to different persons or cultures.
As for the word "nazi", it is IMO just a extremely negative term used to disqualify others, just that.
E.g. translate "fkng bstrd" to other languages. It sounds childish at most, not a real invective  ;)

Not really, no; it's a pedantic but perfectly valid point. "Grammar" and "spelling" are not the same, and a mistake in one doesn't necessarily mean (and doesn't mean in the example) that the other is also wrong. It was still mildly amusing, though, I concede.

President Calvin Coolidge and Mrs. Coolidge were making a presidental visit to a farm. While viewing the chicken pens, Mrs. Coolidge asked the farmer "How many times a day does the rooster copulate?" The farmer replied "Many times a day." Mrs. Coolidge said "Please tell that to the president."

Later the president came by the pens and was told about the rooster. He asked the farmer "With the same hen every time?" The farmer replied "Oh no, a different hen each time." The president said "Please tell that to Mrs. Coolidge."
