The thing hanging on the right is an old bed-warming pan. It’s basically a brass box, a couple of inches deep, fitted with a decorated hinged lid and a long handle. They used to be filled with ashes and the glowing remains of heating fires, and then slid between the sheets in baronial bedrooms to keep master and mistress warm of a night. There was no home insurance back then, so you could do those things. Nowadays, the problem is Shakespearean: to polish or not to polish, that is the question.
If you can find a copy, I recommend reading Forever Amber. It was clearly jealousy that led to the anti-Royalist fever of the Charles 1 and Charles II century. No way somebody was gonna have a good time unless everybody else was gonna enjoy it too! Plus ça change plus c’est la même chose… ;-) |
