Title: Lighroon Cropping Advice . Options?
Post by: Michael West on March 11, 2023, 08:38:44 pm
Is the some secret arcane option to allow cropping to be done while images are displayed at a size  somewhat larger than a postage stamp ?

Thank you

Nope, but get rid of the sidebars and top and bottom bars too, and go fullscreen. This maximizes the size of your image when cropping.

Make sure you have Fit Screen selected as well.  Not sure why you are getting a small image (only with crop tool?).  I don't see a change in size when I select crop ...

Good advice re hitting tab key to get rid of side-bars… and you can also hit the “L” key for “lights out” while cropping which I find helps as well.

when Im cropping a large image....to produce one that's less than an eightr the size of the original...its like changing a tire with chopsticks....

the image remains at the FILL size....even for those instances when It will be cropped severely

Cropping in Lightroom is poor. You should be able to specify the crop size in pixels and also the X and y values of the start point on the image like Aperture and Raw Power.

Ahh yes I see that now (I don't really do crops of that magnitude).

Can you wait to do the crop in ACR?  ie do your LR processing, maybe even with a rough crop in LR, then open as a smart object in PS and then use ACR where you can re-adjust your crop.  ACR does not have those limitations.  You can change the % size and the fit works (to fit the crop not the whole image).

Hopefully those attributes will make their way to LR some day.

Specific pixels don't exist until the raw is rendered (on export). Adobe Camera Raw is no different. Neither are pixel editors!
You can specify this way:

You can specify this way:
I am not talking about export size, I am talking about crop size and location on the full size image.
You can't specify it. It is as simple as that.

You've missed my point: Pixels are only defined at Export. Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw are not pixel editors. Which is why they don't allow you to do what you're asking for. You can of course, upon export.
Or once rendered from Adobe Camera Raw within Photoshop.

No, you are ignoring my point.  Users can and do specify pixel size of a crop on almost every other programme. It is a basic requirement.
This picture proves it.
Here the full size image of some 8000 pixels is cropped to a size of 3000 odd pixels. Normally I use preset sizes and it just does it. Crops can change aspect ratio or just highlight one area of an image.
The export size may be way smaller. Exports don't change aspect ratio.
Anyway, what does it matter if you don't understand a user requirement don't worry.

Afraid not. Not in any Adobe raw converter. Until render and export.
In Adobe pixel editors yes. After rendering into pixels.

This the ONLY data Lightroom Classic knows about pixels from the raw, as shown: based on the crop.
IF you export the full size raw, (you do not alter as shown in the resize options within Export), that's exactly how many pixels you get.
Anything else pixel wise, not from the full resolution raw however isn't shown, can't be shown, can't be known until it is defined at export.
Simple.

Agreed, as I say Adobe is shit at cropping.
However any other catalogue based programme can do this.

I may put a feature request in but it would be ignored so I just keep using something else.

Cropping is a feature that could well be enhanced in Lightroom to match it's competitors.

Other raw convertors (DXO PL & CO as examples) do offer the ability to zoom in when cropping to allow higher precision than LR/ACR and they do offer pixel dimensions too. I'd be surprised if this hasn't been a feature request for LR in the past.

You can zoom in to the cropped section in ACR, as mentioned above.  Can't specify pixel dimensions though

Thank you

One, not so ‘secret’, way is to use a 2nd monitor in loupe view.  As you crop in monitor 1, the resulting crop is shown in full on 2nd.

Personally, I do not understand your, later stated, need for direct pixel size cropping (unless I misunderstand).  I crop for image content and aspect ratio, not number of pixels in any one direction.  Maybe you could explain why you need that.

there are external options of course but for those projects where I dont plan  on using photoshop ideally it would be useful if the preveiws for tiny crops could be increased in size proportionate to the cropping

Everyone does.
The issue is that cropping, unlike exporting, changes the relative size of the subject in the final image and usually the aspect ratio.
If you are doing product work for a customer and you are doing similar work successive times you need to crop the latest images the same amount and same vertical location as the images you did last month or the product this month will appear on the website at a different relative size to last months and the table will be at a different height.

So all products are cropped from full size to the same size and required aspect ratio and then you just move the crop left or right to centre it.

If your ‘similar size’ images, month to month, are identical as to distance, focal length, position, product size, etc I can see how you could use the same image size and vertical location.  While this may be your situation , I doubt it is a very common situation for many…or even for you.  That being the case, In Lightroom, you could also just copy the crop from a prior image and paste it to this months images.

Aspect ratio consistency is easy…just select common one (or define your own).  Then crop and position.  Once sized, easy to copy to subsequent images on batch….and move around

That is exactly the case. Same lens, same distance, same camera stand height. The products are bags so there are bags the size of suit cases down to handbags, wallets and belts. So I need a number of defined sizes.
Yes, there are always work arounds, but why not just display the values? It is easy enough that every other application can do it.

Yours is a one off case relative to most people’s usage, so I do not see LR committing effort on it…particularly as there are workarounds.

You have now expanded your need to a ‘number of defined sizes’, which I assume you have to determine and document for future use.  I suggest you set up (define) a set of images in a folder with each of your crop cases.  You can then go the the defined image you want, copy the crop (ctr-c, chech ‘crop’ only), paste to images you wish (in batch if you wish).

The Preview app, the most basic of editing programmes,  does not require anything to view the crop pixel size. That is the way it works. Just look up.
It even does it on raw files, but you have to save as a Tif.

Yes, it can be done with a workaround in Lightroom Classic of having to go back to something you did before, but why do we need to use workarounds. It obviously knows the pixel size, why not display it?
Why defend an obvious lack of a feature in a product that keeps on charging when free programmes can do it.

No one is defending anything.  What you want is not in LR and probably will never be there.  You have been shown an easy to use alternative (actually easier and more accurate than pulling out a box to specific xy pixel dimensions).  It is your choice to use the alternative offer, find another for yourself, or use the other programs you find do what you want.

BTW…as Andrew showed you in earlier post, the ‘Info Overlay’ has an option for ‘cropped Dimensions’.  As you crop the image, release the mouse button and it will show you the current size.  Addition x or y movement will get you close to the size you want.  Not as exact as copy/paste, but probably within about q0 pixels depending on resolution of screen and mouse/tablet

Well what he said was "Specific pixels don't exist until the raw is rendered (on export). " which is neither correct or what I am asking.
Exporting is not cropping.
Copying from another image you have to go back and find is OK. Being able to drag to a size and see that size is great. Being able to actually enter a size digitally and get that size is even better.
There are programmes that do that.

As a user, my opinion is you don’t (or didnt) know how to use it….and are trying to use it for a need that has little use for the typical Lightroom user.  If your method of cropping is so important to you, use the other program(s).  Don’t make a general statement that Lightroom cropping poor….it obviously is not for most of the users….me included.

Quite frankly, I never really understood the OPks complaint about cropping down to a ‘postage stamp’.

There have been tweaks of improvements, but there really has not been any need for improvement.  As was discussed above, there are ways to do pretty much everything (except digital redefinition), you just need to understand how it works.  The paradigm may not be what you like (outside-in vs inside-out crop and background move vs crop move) but it works.  What is surprising is that someone has not gotten use to it and understood it….it’s been around since 2006!! 😀

Just making the window zoomable and scrollable like DXO PL or Capture one would improve the usability. If Phase & DXO can do it so intuitively, I'm sure Adobe could match that functionality with their resources. The coding would be much less effort than all the sophistication needed for all the AI masking options introduced recently.

I LOVE the AI masking!!!  Would not give that up for anything.

1. You have the source code from Adobe do you?
2. Speaking only for myself (unlike some) the AI masking is an amazingly useful functionality and far more important than tweaks to cropping I don't need.

Tiny demand over a decade; nice try.
Your experience developing software (software for this market) would be???

Cropping in Lightroom is poor. You should be able to specify the crop size in pixels and also the X and y values of the start point on the image like Aperture and Raw Power.

What's wrong with you these days ? Never prepared to accept that users can want things the software doesn't do.

It's not one or other. Updates can contain multiple features.

You don't have to have a degree in software development to work out that writing complex AI code for masking must be significantly more complex and difficult than adding a zoomed view of a crop. It's easy to describe and specify and other software does it well, it can't be that hard.

Neither you nor I know how hard it would be.  Conceptually easy ideas are not necessarily easy implementations.  A lot has to do with the inherent design and existing code base.  Add to that, significant regression testing must be done to ensure that even a ‘simple’ change doesn’t cause a problem someplace else…..programming is often like a balloon….push on this side and it bulges over here.  Then you need to add up the resources and costs and evaluate the return….and weigh against other potential projects, such as masking (AI or otherwise), transforms, speed ups, etc.

What is "wrong" with me: I don’t take you at all seriously.
You make grand generalizations, and assumptions, and you can't admit your lack of experience developing software.
There are strong opinions about how software should be developed, by people (AFAIK, they can't admit their bkgnds) having no experience developing software.
No, I do not fall into that camp (http://pixelgenius.com).  8)

I haven't tried it but that sounds like exactly what I want.
Did you make this overnight?

I have 600 images to process in a typical product shoot. I allow about 1 minute on each in post.
There are 5 bag sizes and two aspect ratios for different websites.
So while having a folder of 10 past images to copy from may be a solution, having a drop down menu of crop presets is a much better one.

BTW, When i asked for this feature in Raw Power it came back in two days. It is clearly not that difficult if others can do it. It is an array with numbers in it. Aperture had it from certainly all of version 3 back in 2007.

Honestly this used to be a forum where you could ask questions and get answers. Unfortunately of late it is just a place for abuse by narcissists if you don't work exactly in their narrow tunnel.

All could be cropped in less than 1 minute in LR.

I don’t know ‘Raw Power’ but it sounds small and simple.  ‘Aperture’ died, what can I say.  Lightroom is big, complex, and has a wide, varied, complex base of computer types and configs it runs on.  You have to have been involved in programming, testing, and packaging in that environment to really understand it.

Crop in 1 minute!
If I can't crop in 10 seconds it is too slow.
"Post" is everything. Import, adjust, crop, export.

If you can't add any real life experience best to just stay quiet.

Yes, you gave a practical solution that Lightroom is capable of and so thanks.

It is real world, factual and doable.
If you have only imagined it, you haven't experienced it.
At least two of us have experienced it.

Raw power is actually quite good for what it does but it completely shackled by being tied to the Photos app which is woeful, particularly in referenced file management.
I tried to get Raw power to build their own database but that probably won't happen. Personally i think it needs to grow or it else it won't survive.

Aperture has commercially died, but still works even under Monterey.
The only issue for what I want to do is repeated crashes as the Libraries have not been updated.

Lightroom has the advantage of being commercial updated and being cross platform, albeit an ongoing charge. It is a Jack of all trades, unfortunately for me, master of none.

I was in the IT industry for 40 years before it was called IT. I have written my own software, not commercially but PHP/MySQL databases and a programme to custom frame images and display the matted and framed image with a quote. Software development takes time but is really not that difficult, especially if outsourced overnight to India. The problem is testing and in particular User Acceptance Testing. Some geeks seem to think this is unnecessary as they believe they know every Use Case and those they don't know don't matter. Cheers

Obviously not so terribly difficult as it's in the mobile version of LR

Sums up well your inability to convince at least two software developers to provide what you demand.
Maybe you should write your own raw converter that crops as you desire. Or less work, like John (the correct John), your own plugin. Doable; my partners and I did so!

Nik Bhatt, IIRC, originally developed RAW Power as iOS app. The LR plugin came later and was soon abandoned ‘cos, in his words, “ …it is extremely difficult to keep it running as Apple makes OS changes. […] All of that is required because of Apple’s sandboxing rules.”

Nice one!
You’ve just made Andrew’s point.

Mobile version of Lr is, in reality, a subset of LrC. No history , no plugins, no extended functionality. So it’s more than reasonable to assume that if Adobe haven’t implemented it (yet) in the parametric version of LR, given that it’s “not so difficult”  – there’s probably a reason.

ITM, Bob Shaw and the other 108  can still zoom and crop ad lib in Photoshop with the added benefit of an action for 600 shot runs.

The irony is Nik worked for Apple.

You could but Photoshop is destructive and also takes about 3 times as long as a catalogue programme working on previews and a database.
For that reason only images that need the background extended sideways or upwards go to Photoshop.
Also if make a mistake you have to reload the image from backup and start again. With a catalogue you just move the crop.

You can't use an action in practice for large scale cropping as each crop, even if the same size, requires a physical intervention for centring as the assistant will place the bag in slightly different spot. Even for the same bag there are different size crops for long shoulder straps and close up detail of stitching and logo.

It really helps to see all of the images for the same bag at the same time like the end user will.

Actually there is non destructive cropping in Photoshop, for like decades.
But yeah, Lightroom Classic is a better place to do so*
Just ask sir!
