Sure about the sensor ? I heard the claim it's a "new" one.

Don't really believe it as my guess is on the same sensor the rest is using as well.

No, I am not.

The announcement was hard to follow life. I will take it off for now.

I guess you deleted the previous post ?

Not sure why.  Plenty of good posts gone.

Anyway. Great announcement to those who felt it was all a pipe dream.

Hope to see early reviews by December.  Built on a great design alread X-t2 X-t1.
Very interested to see more on lenses as if built on par with current X glass this will be a great camera.
Thank fully not X-trans.  Also hope Fuji will send Adobe a unit soon as Phase One will continue their boycott of other non Phase MF I am sure.

The lenses.

You may want to edit the O/P and add the 26.4mm mounting distance to the specs... That means more than 35mm mounting space available from the nearest 6x45 mirror box MF DSLR (The Hasselblad H) and almost 50mm from the nearest 6x6...

Therefore the following should be expected to happen soon...

1. Tons of adapters coming that will allow mirrorbox DSLR camera lenses to be used on the camera...
2. Some tilt/shift adapters for the above mentioned lenses too...
3. Fuji FGX mount for Campo Actus, Arca Universallis and every other bellows camera that is offered in "DSLR" version...
4. Adapters for Canon & Nikon TS & PCE lenses as well as for Samyang (rokinon/wallimex) TSE lenses...

This camera may mean the "death" of Pentax 645 Z....

Hi Erik,

Never have figured out why folks discount Fujirumors so much, as their hit rate is close to 95%, they are really just a pre-announce site.

But this will be a very interesting camera for sure, and if mount adapters can be made, it could get very interesting very fast.

Looking forward to full specs, and early shooters, but the results are pretty much already known, as the 50Mp sensor is very well documented as a excellent sensor.

Very interesting announcement. Great to see innovation. To me this is more interesting then Hasselblads offer - mainly because of the focal plane shutter.

For those who (like me) see one of the benefits in using this with view cameras like Arca Universalis or Cambo Actus:
1. In the press conference they said that this is a costumized sensor (I think with special microlenses). Minimum back focus shall be very close. If this is true you could hope for better angular response when using view camera lenses.
2.  The flange focal distance is 26,7mm. That is 8,7mm more the Sony E-mount. Does anybody with first hand experience know which lenses would fit on an Actus oder Universalis? Digaron-W 32mm is already at the limits with E-Mount.

Same underlying sensor, slightly modified microlens design optimized for Fuji flange distance and mount diameter.

My guess is you don't say "well under $10,000" if your going to sell it at $5,000 so the dream a lot of people had of an ultra cheap Fuji MF camera seems to be dead although it always seemed like wishful thinking to me.

Actually the camera may be more "friendly" than the Sony α7 with WA lenses... It will all depend on the mount's diameter... if it is significantly wider than Sony, it may permit the rear cell of the lens to be recessed in the camera's mount and work just fine...

Of course shifts will be limited as the rear cell may hit the mount at some shift value and some makers may not recommend the lenses that recess into the mount, but I wouldn't hesitate to use the lens if that is the case.... One should then use a camera that has full horizontal and vertical shifts and swings/tilts on the front standard and only use shifts on the rear standard as to stitch within the limits that the tolerances allow...

They covered that in the press conference.  I can't remember the exact numbers but yes the rear element can be placed a lot closer to the sensor (I seem to recall 16mm but I'm not sure) and they had a graphic showing that this will allow lenses to be designed without a large angle of incidence between the light and the sensor.

Update:  The discussion of this starts around the 10:30 minute mark:

The mount diameter was something like 60+ mm if I remember correctly. A few mm wider than the sensor diagonal (55mm). There is a photo of the mount with sensor in the press material.

That is great news... If they covered it in the press conference, it means that they had it mind as a major aspect when first start designing the camera!

we're back to 7 cameras, H6, XD, P1XF, S, Alpa, Sinar and now Fuji. MF might have enough marketing money poured in to to take off again. This is good news.

Actually as Mr Oosting suggested in his interview back in January, "MF market is expected to rise by attracting newcomers out of the top end consumers of FF DSLRs...

The thing is that prices vary significantly between makers, while image quality - it being mostly based on the same sensor from Sony (Leica/Sinar group only excluded)- has very little that differs between makers and functionality as well as adaptation to different photographic tasks, favors the ...entry level products!

Therefore I don't see how some out of the Hi-end makers will make it in the near future, unless if they redesign their marketing position altogether... ALPA seemed to have realised that and turned to collaboration agreement with other than expected...  ;)

Safe to say, heavier and bulkier than the X1D, however already liking the design. The rotation on the viewfinder is very unique.

And the LCD moves, (thanks Fuji)

It weights 880g with the viewfinder, and Hasselblad is 725g.

Pretty cool stuff. I can imagine getting the camera along with the three initial lenses and calling it a day. I'd use the rig (mostly) handheld.

IMO it'll be good for the medium format market to have a player who's in it mainly for the prestige and can afford to not be cautious. That Fuji's camera division also appears to have a clue about who its customers are is also a plus.

Hi,

If you shoot macro in the real world that viewfinder rotation may be useful.

The new Fuji may be a photographers camera.

Apparently the sensor is a new one

Quote
"This sensor has been fully customised – it is entirely new and all designed by Fuji. It uses an optimised silicon optical diode process, and Fuji says it will resolve 1000 lines more than 35mm format."

Not only for macro work. I regularly find myself with my back against a wall when shooting interiors - and wish I could step back further. So I place the camera directly at the wall and use a field monitor to compose and focus. Setting this up takes time when I do paid word. With the GFX' rotatable EVF I won't need that any more. Great innovation.

This type of design, was what I had hoped Phase One would work out on the XF, or at least follow up with it, as they made the 90 degree viewfinder removeable, (sure I know they have the other style that can be mounted).

But thinking more about it, probably won't happen to the XF, as you would also have to remove the finder screen inside the camera and that's not an easy job.  The CMOS backs, would adapt pretty easily, just be in Live View all the time.  With the power share tech they came out with, which works great, the drain on the back due to Live View would not be as hard.

Good catch on video, which is a bit surprising, but as you point out, may come later.

Also curious about electronic first curtain on the FPS, and or fully electronic shutter as on the X series cameras.

Same line of bull every time Nikon announces a camera based on a Sony sensor.  It is the Sony sensor with a Fuji designed micro lens array.  It is not an entirely new sensor but they always say that.  yes it is an entirely new part number that uses the same mask set and semiconductor process as the other guys using the Sony 50mp sensor with only the final steps being custom to Fuji.

Take a look at these videos of a prototype of the camera in use (sorry it's in Japanese) - you can see how much chunkier the camera is than the Hasselblad, probably about 50% or maybe even more thicker:

Very interesting times!

In the end it will be about leaf shutter lenses vs in body shutter. If you need flash outdoors, go Hassy, if you don't go Fuji. If you want non native lenses, go Fuji,...

I would expect the leaf shutter to be a major design constraint which explains the hesitations of Fuji with zoom lenses. On the other hand Fuji, that I consider to be one of the 2-3 best lens design house in the world, will be able to unleash their creativity.

The truth is that most photographers needing outdoor strobes already shoot with leaf shutter lenses, and there is limited incentive to use H lenses with a X1D due to bulk and cost.

Overall my bet goes slightly to Fuji... and that with me being real close to investing in the H system.

Cheers,
Bernard

I think many MF users will prefer the "beefier" Fuji body with respect to X1D... The traditional analog controls too... I think the extra bulk is related to the camera having a (huge) focal plane shutter in the body (which Hasselblad lucks), as well as the work that has been done on the interchangeable viewfinder...

Fuji has already said that the camera can shoot tethered so any application that builds in tethering support for that camera will work.
Oh wait, I think your point is that C1 is working with a non Phase One MF camera...!  That would be huge.

LOL...  ;D Good point....

Serious now, lets not forget that Fuji is fully aware of the Hasselblad H latest interface (they make the lenses!) and thus it wouldn't be surprising at all if they'll present an adapter for one to use Hasselblad H lenses with full leaf shutter sync compatibility on the body... Even if one then buys HC/HCD lenses for the camera, there is still income out of the lenses for Fuji!

Unless Hassy agrees to this, and I don't think they would, this would put the relationship btw the 2 companies seriously at risk. This is most probably not going to happen. The best way to use H lenses on a mirrorless camera is going to be the X1D.

I'm not that familiar with C1 pro yet, but since it's clearly a pre-production camera, wouldn't the most likely explanation be that they were shooting jpeg or tiff to a watched folder? And isn't it possible they could have used something like an Eyefi card in the camera to send them to the computer, or the new camera has wifi built into it?

Unless Hassy agrees to this, and I don't think they would, this would put the relationship btw the 2 companies seriously at risk. This is not going to happen.

Cheers,
Bernard

There is nothing that Hasselblad can do to stop them doing so... there is no "patent protection" or "rights" for lens interface communication...

Perhaps Hasselblad's choice to address on a different maker for the X1D lenses is related to them knowing that the GFX was coming....

Lets not forget that HC lenses where also marketed as Fujinons in the Japan (and other far east) market(s). Hasselblad may of course decide to then get another provider for future H lenses, but I very much doubt they would want to do so... Lets not forget, that there is nothing stopping Fuji as to continue making lenses for the H system even if Hasselblad decides on a different provider and that Fuji is most probably aiming for high volume for the GFX (maybe 25K units annually?) and that could be very good income provider for Hasselblad as it could then widen the lens market for the H system (which is less than 1/10th for production volumes) considerably...

I think that both makers could benefit substantially if such an adapter would be available....

I'll be curious to eventually read reviews and user reports on degree of weather sealing....camera and lenses...given the announced terminology 'weather resistant'.  I hope it's as robust as reports on the Leica S and SL.

Lensrentals plans to carry the X1D for rental; I've emailed them to determine if they'll also carry the Fuji. If so, I'll be testing both in my print workflow.  Lensrentals has also been known to disassemble very expensive cameras and lenses soon after release, not just as part of servicing, but to evaluate build (and weather sealing) quality.

Good times for photographers....the hits just keep on coming.

Maybe Hassy already agreed, in the sense that Fuji has some marketing rights in Japan for the H series, as you well know

Take a look at these videos of a prototype of the camera in use (sorry it's in Japanese) - you can see how much chunkier the camera is than the Hasselblad, probably about 50% or maybe even more thicker:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHhAkirFH-Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4wvnA4iO6s

That does certainly highlight the achievement of Hassleblad making the X1D as thin as it is although I suspect Fuji's motivation for saving that degree of size may not have been as strong.

Generally what stands out for me is just how different two MF mirrorless cameras with essentially the same sensor look in terms of their intent. For all the talk of professional use I think the key market for the X1D is offering something for the traditional Leica market where as this Fuji system seems more aimed at either traditional MF users or FF DSLR users.

You could argue I spose that "crop" MF is in some ways more like ASPC than it is FF in terms of the mirrorless market. That is your not just dealing with potentially saving size via removing the mirror but also by designing your mount for the specific sensor size rather than being tied to a longer flange distance of a larger format size, look at how much thinner the Leice S is relative to the Pentax 645D/Z. That leaves more room for different levels of size saving, just as you have very small ASPC mirrorless cameras but also something like the X-T1 that's still smaller than a DSLR but with more similar handling rather than depending more overtly on menus.

The announcement just finished at Photokina.

51 MP sensor
Design as X-T2 (shutterspeed and iso dials on top)
EVP (moveable)
Screen (moveable)
1/4000 sec.
26.4 mm mounting distance

Available early 2017 :

63mm f/2.8 standard lens
32-64mm f/4.0 zoom
120mm f/4.0 macro

later in the year :

45mm f/2.8
23mm f/4.0
110mm f/2.0

Pricing "way under 10,000 $" for camera and standard lens

I suppose that the name FGX used on the title is a typo? ...Maybe it's best if it is edited to the correct GFX-50s camera name...  :o

I am at Photokina with Nick Devlin and we have a meeting tomorrow to go over this new camera.  It will most likely be the talk of the show this year.  we'll make posts as soon as we can on all we see and learn.  In my opinion it looks to be quite an interesting camera and it shows that the industry belives in medium format.  It will be interesting to see how the enxt few months as well as next year plays out.

One more thing please Kevin, I'm under the strong impression by looking inside the mount of the naked body, that the GFX can use a FF 54x40mm sensor on the same very mount... I think that this is among the most important questions that would be great to be answered.....

If not the 54X40, for sure 48X36 fits in. And I agree, that would be THE question and THE answer for Kina '16.

There is a lot to chew on here!  2017 will be a very fun year in terms of how MF market continues to evolve.  To be honest I'm not sure how I will respond to all this news.  I will have to wait to get some performance data and usability info.  I currently own the IQ3100 and love the camera - except the weight.  My plan was to buy the X1D (if I like it's performance) and use it as a backup in my pack or my solo camera when weight restrictions are necessary.  Depending how the Fuji system tests out and whether they develop a larger sensor it could be the one and only.  It's a very high class problem to have these kind of choices.  We are clearly the hitting asymtote of performance.  I guess usability will now rule the day.  It may be time to sell all my Nikon equipment to pay for all of this!

Sorry about the Typo that's what happens at 2AM in the morning.  Spent some time with the GFX today more will come in our show report.  It feels good in the hands, is light and lenses were lighter than expected.  It is mechanical shutter only now with 125th sync speed.   The shooting specs sound good around 4fps and the ergonomics is well thought out.

That the camera has a focal plane shutter, doesn't mean that it won't be able to work with leaf shutter... Lets wait and see... Lets not forget that leaf shutter on their MF products is a tradition for Fuji...

The short answer to much of what we asked is that a lot is still under development and what we saw today was a developmental camera. Also, this is the first camera in a series of cameras.  Yes, Fuji is looking at adapting other lenses to the G series. when and if they do it is up in the air. We had dinner with their engineers and managers and they are all ears and taking lots of notes.  I think we need to see where things go and what develops over the coming months. We will try to post a report tomorrow but internet, connections at the hotel as well as the press center are painful.

We also looked at a lot of other stufff today.  We will do our best to get something up by morning.

Best not forget, that Fuji unlike any other company until Phase and the XF, has managed to pass on significant advancements to existing cameras via Firmware.  This was seen with the X-T1 and the electronic shutter, (plus massive AF improvements).  And will soon be done to the X-Pro2 (adding significant improvement).  I have never seen this type of rolling improvement from Nikon or Canon and especially Sony.  And with Canon, what could be added is huge (just look at what Magic Lantern can do).

It's safe to assume (IMO) that Fuji will continue this mind share into the MF world so that even after 1 year, you can expect improvements to the 1st body of the GFX.

They have already stated (in a round about way in statements around lens design) that they are planning to also have 100MP in this body at sometime.  But that won't be by firmware.  :)

Even though personally I am not a fan of x-trans I love their product support and company focus on the photographer.  This will be a well thought out camera.

My impression is that the camera won't be available until a year from now... ("in to 2017" is anything but specific for an announcement), but when it comes, it will be the "photographer's dream"... Well, it's a Fuji isn't it? ... the company that is known to revolutionize whatever task they are after!

I really expect the body to be compatible with 54x40 sensors (2.67mm flange distance? ...why? 33x44mm sensors require considerably less than that... and then the mount is too wide for a 33x44 sensor...), I expect it to work with leaf shutter lenses, (at least certainly with the HC/HCD lenses that they also make), I expect it to be the ultimate "back" for bellows cameras... (16.7mm minimum distance from lens rear element!), I expect it to have a version with multishot "true color" captures and then... detouchable finders, rear screen, revolutionary tethering abilities and perfect ergonomics with "built like tank" quality seems to be what completes the picture...

One system, one series of lenses (not necessarily "dedicated" to the camera) for all tasks that a photographer may face... and then all with "fuji" image quality... ;)

Well, my 2017 shopping list just got a lot more interesting!  ;)

Great that we have a range of different systems to choose from now, each with strengths and weaknesses. I'm interested in the Fuji, but the draw of Hasselblad colours and leaf shutters is considerable.

The longer I use the A7RII, the less bothered I am about EVF vs optical... and the lack of a bloody great mirror going clunk before every exposure certainly helps hand-holding.

Really, we are absolutely spoiled. There's hardly such a thing as a bad camera on the market. I can see selling points just for my own photography for the 5D Mark IV, the 1DX2, the GH5, the H6D, the X1D, the Pentax 645Z, the GFX, the OM-D E-M1 II, and I'm sure the smaller-frame Fujis have their appeal too (as do Nikons and whatever Sony will come up with after the A7RII of course).

Actually my main hope is for a bit of convergence, so I can rationalise my lens collection. I've got the equivalent of 28 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm, 105 mm, 70-200 mm zoom and standard zoom in four different lens mounts already, not counting the case of "junk" glass M42 thread lenses I use on my RED when I want a softer film look, and a whole case of more exotic speciality glass like 180 mm macros and the like which I'm sticking to EF mount for, for the forseeable future (they're usable on the RED, and the A7RII with Metabones).

... and that's probably the number one flaw in the GFX for me as announced- yet another lens mount to collect. A lot will depend on the price when they finally arrive. If they are circa the same as the Hasselblad lenses, I'll probably just stick with Hasselblad.

Cheers, Hywel

Just this alone would a great spot for me

I hope to read something related to the viewfinder experience, which is my initial priority for considering any system. I was underwhelmed by the X1D VF at the demo I attended, but that was admittedly a prototype version.

As far as the viewfinder it is not finalized.  They smile a lot when asked about it so they have something up their sleeve. Simply they won't share specs yet but when pushed they smile which is as good as saying they have plans they aren't sharing yet but should make us happy.

Certain lenses in the roadmap are marked "late 2017" so I'd imagine the body and the first few might well be in the first half of the year.

In terms of flange distance and mount size my guess is that it will be limited to the existing sensor size but that Fuji have given themselves a bit more space to work with in order to make lens design easier.

2.64mm flange distance on a mirrorless  doesn't make lens design any easier... It only makes compatibility with bellows cameras harder and thus it is not desirable. It is only desirable if one has a larger sensor in mind for future use....  ;)

Having just experienced yet another complete failure of a modular medium format digital system (Hasselblad body with Phase IQ180 back), my priorities for my next medium format system are on weatherproofing and size/weight. Fuji's decision to use a detachable viewfinder is a red flag to me. It creates a connection point that exposes the camera to moisture, and for what benefit? I am also interested in how the weight and size of the Fuji camera and lenses compares with the X1D and its lenses. I wish they would publish that information.

Yeah,

We're back in science fiction territory with the Fuji; by the time they bring it out, chip costs will be 40% under the present point so it will be very profitable.
In fact the budget should allow for a really decent EVF.
I wonder whether the lens mount is dimensioned for sensor stabilisation - the last unclimbed mountain of the medium format move to mirrorless?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the most important feature of the GFX. In the video they have posted of the fashion shoot, the photographer is quite clearly shooting tethered to C1 PRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they use a firmware similar to the APC Fuji Cameras. As they do for the 645z Phase One will build an active restriction to Block the FGX.

I've seen the GFX at Photokina yesterday. Like it very much. Some observations and calculations concerning the use with other lenses:
1. After looking at the datasheets from Rodenstock (maybe someone can crosscheck): wide angle view camera lenses won't work. Digaron W-32, 40 and 50 need shorter distances to the sensor than 26,7mm and would protrude into the camera. And the diameter of the rear housing of these lenses is too large for that.
2. Canon lenses on bellow cameras like Cambo Actus and Arca Universalis: the Canon lens boards of both systems take most of the difference between the flange distances of Canon EF and Fuji GFX (44mm - 26,7mm = 17,3mm). So it's a very close game. Both companies said they want to check if it could work. For the Universalis the Lens board interferes with the grip additionally, probably not possible to work around that. But the Cambo lens board is not very wide, it will probalby not collide with the Fuji grip. See attached image, where I tried to scale all to the same size.
3. I very much hope for an adapter with control of the electronic aperture of the Canon lenses.
4. With a Jasring adapter (Contax 645 to Canon EF) you could problably even use Contax 645 lenses. Depends on if the narrower mount of the Canon would cause vignetting. Anyone ever tried to check that?

Hi Marc... lucky you being there...

1. The rear element of the lenses may protrude in the mount, but the mount is too wide (it looks around 70mm judging from the pictures).... several mm of shifts will be allowed... but other than that, lets not forget that Fuji also makes the Hasselblad HC/HCD lenses (of which the series go down to 24mm) and then there is the Canon TSE, Nikkor PCE (the sharpest out of all) and Samyang TS lenses...

2. One would expect the camera not to be mounted on the rear frame of a 6x9 camera, but instead, "directly" on the bellows of it... just like with all other "DSLR" type of cameras... so the grip won't be a problem....

3&4. Kevin already reported that Fuji aims for lenses of other makers to be used on the camera... I would therefore expect all Canon TSE & Nikkor PCE to be directly compatible with it on a bellows camera, without the need for one to use dual adapters in series... (only external wiring for direct mount communication). It may take sometime... but like with the Sony a7 series, it is natural to expect an "army" of adapters targeting the customers of the camera.

I even expect the camera to be able to work with leaf shutter lenses (at least with HC/HCD for sure...) via official adapters...

Hi Theodoros,

1. the mount is not that wide. The foto by fuji shows the front of the camera with the sensor. Sensor diagonal is 55mm. So the inner red circle in the image (with dots) is 55m, the outer one about 67mm I estimate. So generally you're right, it's close to 70mm. But keep in mind that the bayonet part on the lens side makes the room narrower. And you should not touch the lens contacts with the lens housing. The diameter of the rear housing is listed with 56mm for Digaron W 32 and 40. The 50 is a little smaller with 51mm. If the lens housings fit in at all there will be nearly no room for movements, at least not in all directions. How sad.

2. The grip will only a problem with that specific canon lens board that arca has (announced at photokina 2014, they said they finally start to deliver). It has to be very close to the body because of the small difference in flange distance. So close that you get near to the grip.
Regards -
Marc

So far, this seems like the camera I have been waiting for. It seems like the future of cameras also, as 35mm sensors crammed with pixels gets problematic and this gives some more room for that. I'm really excited about it and how it could be used, adapted and so forth, for example with 645 speed boosting adapters etc. Fuji lenses are beautiful, I've been using them a long time since my GX680 and they are incredibly sharp. That 110mm f2 looks like a total future classic and has me salivating. The finder is a work of genius also. I can't see a reason why I won't be buying it at this point.

Theo,

Even though camera bodies mount on the view cameras via the bellows, the grip can be a problem with the FRONT standard.  I noticed how the A7r2 had more of an issues with this than the A7r1.  The A7r2 just barely works on my Universalis with Canon lenses.  If the Fuji does indeed have a deeper sensor to flange distance, then I don't think it's going to be compatible with view cameras using Canon lenses.

This is all moot until we have real world testing, tho...

Hi Chris...  I was thinking about you paying particular attention on this camera...

But since I'm personally involved on a project about a "perfect" camera (which I will ask you -among other photographerss- to test soon) I can comment on the following...
It is really important how the lens mount it is designed to be on the front standard... in my design, there is an adjustment where the frame can be adjusted back and forth on the front standard, so that one can adjust the entrance pupil of the lens (any lens) as to be positioned exactly at center of the entrance pupil... Now, because on retrofocus designs the entrance pupil of the lens is several centimeters inside the lens barrel (lens focused to infinity), this means that (depending on the size of the surface of the standard - mine is 6.4x6.4cm) usually, the mount of the lens will be positioned outside the projection of the block's surface and into the bellows area...

Thus, if one takes care that the lens mount is on the back of the lens frame, there should be no problem with any lens that has flange distance of more than 42mm, no matter the amount of tilts/swings used... Note that there will be no problem with near symmetrical designs either, although the entrance pupil is usually in the center of the shutter... this is because the rear cell of the lens usually protudes considerably behind the lens mount, but on my design, one will be able to slide the camera towards the bellows area and compensate for the rare case that the lens rear element doesn't protude enough... Then, he'll only have not to use tilts or swings on the rear standard (but only on the front) as to retain a completely distortionless operation...

Besides... on Fuji's design, the lens mount has been designed to protrude outside the camera body... Thus, it is taking space that would be lost from the grip size anyway... The grip's extra length added (from the lens mount) is much less than one should think of, if he judges the distance from the body...
Ι would dare to say that it is no more than Sony α7 II and that the maximum sensor to grip protruding from it distance, is not that much more than what it is with an α7ΙΙ Sony...
After all, one must notice the generous space that Fuji engineers gave as for one to use circular disks instead of square shaped frames... Lets not forget that the 85mm front frame hole that the Rollei e-xact2 & Novoflex Balpro uses, tends to be a "standard" (much like the Arca plates) as it can take all shutters in it.... ALPA uses the same on their new "Serpent" camera (I also use it in my design)... What is stopping someone to use circular "disk" front frame with 85mm inside and 95mm outside diameter?  The Fuji will definitely recess the grip by a 95mm diameter disk...

EDIT: Even if one uses a square frame with 85mm hole mount, any of the Nikon, Canon or other DSLR mounts can be designed as recessed boards... it won't matter to the geometry of the camera if the frame can be adjusted on the standard for the entrance pupil of the lens correct positioning... The lens will still be in the same position, it's the frame that will get "out of the way"...  ;)

Many of us shoot tethered, so I see tethering as a giant weakness for this camera. I doubt PhaseOne will support it officially in CaptureOne and dedicate any time to optimizing the RAW files coming out of it. What else does Fuji use for tethering if not CaptureOne? Writing their own software? We all know how long this takes and how hard it is to get right. LightRoom? Sure, support will certainly be there but speed has always been secondary when it comes to tethering with it.

Good luck with your tethering solution Fuji.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the most important feature of the GFX. In the video they have posted of the fashion shoot, the photographer is quite clearly shooting tethered to C1 PRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin, can you ask about this tomorrow?

Regards,
Jason.

Rico Pfirstinger just posted a worth reading detailed analysis on the GFX-50s https://fuji-x-secrets.net/2016/09/21/inside-the-fujifilm-gfx-50s/  He confirms in the article (after talking with the Fuji people that are involved in the project at photokina) that the camera will work with leaf shutter lenses...

The exact words in the article are these:

"There will be a range of adapters to connect third-party lenses to the GFX 50S, including leaf shutter lenses for studio and flash work. For example, there has been reports about a Hasselblad HC adapter with leaf shutter, electronic aperture and autofocus support."

Also... I'm now sure that the mount is able to accept a FF 54x40mm sensor... I'm sorry I can't share the source, but it is a result out of careful calculations made by an engineering team that is researching the use and compatibility with lenses of various mirrorless cameras (FF too) as to be used for image area with shutter on a bellows camera.

EDIT: In Rico's article, it is also mentioned that the camera will be available "in spring" and that with the camera's entrance in the market, specification will include "HQ 30fps video"  and "at least 51200 ISO range"...

These reports probably being your postings in this very forum... ;)

Anyway, I will soon be invested in the H system, so I would love this to be true, but I still doubt it.

Rico is reporting the specifications and project aspects he discussed with the Fuji people Bernard, I'm sure Kevin had a similar conversation and can confirm... I've also have information from other people that are in Photokina that Fuji people confirm that it is a company policy to make the body adaptable with third party lenses... So much more for HC/HCD lenses, which are not "third party", but rather... "family".

There is a "volcano" explosion happening at photokina because of this camera and it seems that it is justified too... I have to say, I try my best to find a way as to be among the first consumers....

The idea with exchangeable viewfinders is very good - and taken from old rangefinder cameras who could exchange theirs - only they were optical.

I just wonder why it has to be an EV? There are classic rangefinder cameras like the Plaubel Makina - I'd love to see such a concept on a digital camera (not the fixed lens thing, of course)

Why not stick optical viewfinders on top, right at the optical axis, so you have only one kind of parallax to deal with?

Hi Chris,

One of the main reasons that I don't want a larger battery on the A7rII…

Best regards
Erik

Chris refers to the Universallis (only) use with the Sony α7 and short flange distance lenses made for mirrorbox DSLRs... The "problem" clearly is with Arca insisting to use square boards on the front (lens) frame which then comes too close to the grip when one uses the lens focused near infinity... If Arca would use circular frames, like the Cambo Actus or Actus XL does, there would clearly be no problem, no matter the size of the grip... I guess they will have to redesign the lens frame of the Universallis if they want it to be compatible with Fuji GFX and lenses made for Nikon or Canon... No big deal... Don't know why they didn't do it in the first place.

According to Rico's report, the GFX will have an EVF with higher 1280 x 960 resolution (similar to the Leica SL, just in 1.33/1 instead of 1.5/1 format) at 60 fps, not the lower 1024 resolution EVF that it used in the Hasselblad X1D. And with 0,85x size it is larger than all OVFs or EVFs in the 0,77x to 0,80x range, that are normally considered to be 'large'.

The Fuji GFX makes a lot of my dreams come true.

What would make it absolutely perfect for my needs: if somebody would build a kind of „universal“ shift adapter for it. With a feature set like:
   •   Horizontal and vertical shift separated. Like a very small pancake camera. Geared shifts as smooth and self-locking as for example the ones on an Arca Swiss Rm3Di. I wouldn’t need tilt very much.
   •   Making use of the 12 electronic contacts of the GFX to control electronic aperture of lenses from different manufacturers and to record used lens in exif.
   •   With interchangeable front plates for different lens manufacturers, including the mounts and - if necessary - additional electronics. You could start with one plate and make it an open platform so that others could add front plates for other lens systems.
   •   Record the amount of shift in EXIF! That would allow to apply lens correction profiles without guessing (which lens was that? Fuck, I forgot to note the small amount of horizontal shift I added, not to mention the vertical shift)
   •   Make it thin enough that Canon Lenses can be used too.

I would pay thousands for such a solution. It would turn the GFX into a dream camera for architecture. Of course I want too much. But since Fuji suddenly brought up something so amazing like GFX…
If I want too much - just give me a fixed adapter with aperture control for Canon TS-Es fast - a much smaller dream :(

An interview about the GFX with Toshihisa Iida, Fujifilm's General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Group) at https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/7988407692/interview-fujifilm-explains-the-gfx-50s-medium-format-mirrorless  (video and transcript):
Thee is ambiguity about the "new sensor", which might be new in the same way that Fujifilm described the X-Trans sensors as their own new designs: new as a whole, by combining newly developed toppings (micro-lenses, CFA's) and related processing changes with a "bare chip" provided by Sony:
Quote
This sensor is a big sensor and you have to you know capture the light as straight as possible. So, in order to do that, we optimized the microlenses on the surface of the sensor. So the microlens and the signal process is also optimized.

I also see further evidence – with some waffling and/or imperfect English phrasing – that once the anti-alias filter can be removed, X-Trans is not worthwhile:
Quote
. . . this is a Bayer sensor.
. . .
So X-Trans, you know, works perfectly well for APS-C format. For this large format, although we eliminate the low-pass filter, we found the sensor is large enough without X-Trans CMOS sensor.

And fairly promising news about the arrival time:
Quote
So all we are targeting release of the body and the three lenses together

It is particularly interesting that the RAW processing of the images is mentioned... I wonder what Fuji has up on their sleeve on the matter... Tradition suggests that they leave nothing without attention and then, that they have the technology to compete up to the top...

The "aperture ring" on the Fuji lenses is not a traditional design is it?

As in, it communicates electronically with the Fuji GFX only and would not be able to be placed on another smaller format camera and have the ability to be able to adjust the aperture?

Just another quick one...

I always heard about "16 bit color" when discussing MFD but as yet I have not seen this in any of the Fuji press.

Does this exist?  Or is this a Phase One invention?

Fujifilm has not said anything about its new 44x33 format GFX mirrorless system being compatible with a larger sensor format like 54x40; nor has Hasselblad or any other maker of a new system and lens mount being compatible with a larger format.  But Theodoros has assured us that the GFX mount can handle this.

Whether the current lenses cover the larger format is far less clear. Sony launched the E mount in APS-C format and then super-sized to 35mm format and "FE" lenses: do any of the "E" lenses originally released for APS-C format "NEX" bodies work without vignetting on 35mm format E-mount bodies?

Some overlays of other sensors that may help, albeit the ray path on this new camera will angle under the mount it seems after some Fuji lens demo's

Making and/or using a 16-bit A/D converter is one thing. But making a sensor that, when its photosite voltages are quantized post capture, can deliver 16 bits worth of proper image data is another.

Hi,

Photoshop is 15 bits, at least for the time being, so would there be a 16 bit file Photoshop wouldn't be able to handle it at full DR.

As Telecaster says, it is one thing to have a 16 bit converter and an another thing to have 16 bit clean data. Modern CMOS on DSLR can deliver about 14 bits of information. The 44x33 sensors seem to deliver around 14 bits worth of data.

The IQ3-100MP sensor seems to deliver close to 15 bit of data.

The 16 bits of data Phase One was bragging about was very questionable, mildly speaking. A smart guy known as 'Torger' found out that raw data was just 14 bits, with the IQ3-100MP Phase One now actually have 16 bits coding in the raw file.

Best regards
Erik
