Dear Forum members,
I have been following the Hasselblad camp for a good number of months, and trying to see what if anything 2016 will bring in the shape of a successor for the H5D. A very positive sign of things to come was the interview with Hasselblad CEO Perry Oosting (https://luminous-landscape.com/interview-with-the-ceo-of-hasselblad-perry-oosting/) back in February on this very forum.
As it happens I have been hearing a lot of recent chatter from various sources, to what could amount to be the arrival of the next generation H series the H6D.
It is no secret there will be a H6D-100 at least to me from a competitor perspective (Phase One), however there are indications there will also be a H6D-50, possibly sooner than expected :-)
Reliable sources are telling me the camera will be an upgrade to the current H5D and will include the following:
- Higher frame rate > 1.5 frames a sec
- High resolution touch display similar or better than Phase, so that focus checking can be done easily
- USB 3.0
- Dual memory slots (CF and SD)
- Possibly video (720p or 1080p or 4K)
I guess only time will tell if my sources were right.
Has anyone else heard anything? your thoughts? I am expecting the H6D to continue to sport the good looks of the H series family :-)

This would all be very exciting for most MF shooters. I know that the dual card bit is a constant ask, and the H backs lack of a better screen and USB3 has been hurting them. The -50c chip can do 3fps, and I would actually suggest they do dual U3 SD cards, as while CF is nice, it's not mandatory, and the second row of pins would allow for a much faster data dump from the brain.
Add in an improved wifi client, and they're back in the game.
I would actually ask that the do an H back, for all the 'open H' bodies still out there. Include a battery slot, but come on and give everyone who's shooting an H body with H lenses the ability to shoot with the -50c chip. I would go so far as making it compatible with the H3/H4 bodies as well, just need to keep the pricing inline with the CFV-50c plus a touch (say $12k?).
-
I am looking forward to the high resolution touch screen back. Curious to see what if any changes in the menu system this might bring. The current back has buttons...
For me and my style of shooting, I find the screen still too small to accurately redetct sharp focus. If I wanted to check focus I would tether or wirelessly connect to a larger screen in the form of an iPad. Just my opinion.

Looks like Phase One has now announced H support for their IQ3100. Only H no V. But I guess good news for Hasselblad shooters.

Phase One IQ3XX support for H backs - That's a good sign :)

If I was a betting man, which I think I am, I don't see this coming under the H5D sale price. 20k and up for a higher resolution back and an extra card slot?
Edit: by higher resolution I meant LCD screen on their 50C back. A close friend told me the 100 back with float right around 30 grand.

DT will have a H mount 100mp at WPPI.
V mount has been stated as a no from PhaseOne. Hasselblad could do up a back, but it was discussed earlier.

Are they gonna have a 100MP back and then a new camera, or do it all at once?
New camera gives them a chance to bring in the 50 at a higher pricepoint while making the H5D50C an entry-level 10K substitute for the H5D40.
Marketing is complicated - look at all the contortions and feature-cutting Phase go through to keep both the high end IQ and more reasonably priced Credo brands next to each other, so as to extract maximal moolah.

I have no idea, crazier things have happened.
We shall see.
I don't know how the 100MP back influences the development of a new body. In reality it's such a niche market that's not something that would sway someone to buy one... "Oh wow, it has video now" "oh wow it has two card slots". That's not going to change the mindset of someone willing to spend 40 grand on a camera.

But ... DJI might want better video for their drones :)

Updating the aging digital back platform is long awaited and the new CMOS possibilities with video and the very high resolution now with the 100MP made it critical I guess. It's good to see that Hasselblad actually has money again to do fundamentally new development and not just fitting new sensors in their old backs.
Hasselblad has showed some indications of lower prices but as said before it will probably only affect the entry level packages. The 44x33mm CMOS will become the new entry level, and the fullframe 100MP will hold the traditional high price. There's really no price pressure on full-frame 645 as only Hassy and Phase One has it.
It seems likely to me that Hasselblad will go all CMOS before Phase One. I would not be surprised if the H6D will only have the 50 and 100MP sensors, with or without multi-shot in various combinations, and hopefully there will also be a V-mount 645 version but I'm less sure about that. It would be super-cool if the could re-introduce the 49x37mm size inbetween so they had three steps to differentiate, but thats very unlikely due to the difficulty in getting a custom CMOS size.
-
Every time I hear "it's coming sooner than expected" sort of rumours, it ends up false. There has not been one time this sort of rumour has been true and I do not expect it to be different for a niche high end company, except for, perhaps, in people dreams.

Haha but it's true. That's why they call them RUMOURS...lol

Andreas,
Going Sony CMOS means they have a drop-in digital device and probably a reference SDK from Sony. The imaging part becomes much easier. A bright 13 year old could build a functional back with a CMOS sensor, although I guess some of the postprocessing still needs skill.
CCD is more expensive to make: CCD tech is a pain with complex analog electronics, signal processing and of course careful manufacturing.
Last, not least, a lot of the industry is now using the Sony sensor family, and this means subcontracting and hiring engineers and getting code is much easier.
Hassy are suddenly in camera-designer paradise: Drop-in electronics, mirrored body a segue of the existing well-loved mechanics, mirrorless body a box with a lensmount, a family of existing lenses from which they can cherry pick what to replace first, this is impossible to get wrong, unless Phase cut their pricing to the bone, which would have Doug and Steve protesting in the streets.

Anders, getting "custom sensor" (therefore "custom size") is much easier for Hasselblad to do than P1... This is due to them having contracts with Arri & DCI while P1 is still "trapped" to the "open" market solutions... Hassy does now have access to other than open "market sensors"... Leica also (and therefore Sinar too...). Don't know if P1 has access to those (very few) W/W labs as to have a custom sensor... but I'm sure they are working on the subject... I'm not sure that the future path for P1 is as easy as with Hassy though... (near) future will tell... Hassy has promised "lots of new products" for this year....

USB3! Oh happy day! I have long been putting off upgrading my aging H2D-39 because of Firewire (and an old experience with Imacon discontinuing software support for SCSI scanners even after customers purchased what was advertised as an upgrade to Firewire).

USB3! Oh happy day! ....

And why not usb 3.1? for that is now the standard and with 100MP files very welcome...

Here's a review for you ::) : Nice to see one of my images on the home page of Hasselblad's website! I've also had a further peek at their new generation camera. Incredible!

It's coming this month of March...(i guess*) ; )

With Hasselblad, Fuji, a possible Sony, and a possible Pentax refresh, I guess somebody will make a break first and preannounce. My guess is it will be Hasselblad, they really need to counterbalance the 100MP from Phase and the rumors of financial issues. The problem, as always is avoiding the Osborne effect - moving inventory of the retiring milk-cow when the next one is known but not yet ready to sell.
Edmund
-
The Osborne effect won't apply as the 100MP plays in the IQ380 space in Phase, but the -60 or the -50c Hasselblads aren't really in the same space.
-

I think they would be crazy to do a new body in 100MP at first, that is where focus and tolerances are toughest. Start easy ...
-
OK.... forget about the H6 (it's old news)... let's talk about the H7... or 8... or there after! ;D
-
They'll skip the H8 cause otherwise everybody'd be H8n on Hasselblad again.
-
Just back from London.
Heard the same. A H6D50 and a H6D100. Both before the Photokina.
We will see .....

If there was one thing that H5X is missing, I reckon it is a focal plane shutter to replace those "closets" that Hasselblad is traditionally using to block light from "hitting" the sensor (or film)... I guess it's about time that Hasselblad goes "focal plane" too as everybody else has... Other than the leaf shutter not needed at all in UWA lenses, it also makes lenses bulkier, slower and more expensive for no reason at many focal lengths... I think Leica's decision to only have 4-5 lenses offered with leaf shutter as an alternative is the correct one... One that needs leaf shutter, doesn't need it in more than a couple (maximum three) lenses... It will mean that new lenses without leaf shutter build in won't be compatible with older bodies, but one has to start from somewhere as to make things right...
Don't know if an H6x is coming, don't care to discuss that either, but I do know that a Hasselblad with focal plane shutter, faster lenses and compatible with the leaf shutter lenses that one only needs, would be very tempting for all C645, Rollei 6xxx & HY-6 and older H1 & H2 Hassys to replace their platform for a modern one... Especially if somebody will offer adapters as for these people to keep their lenses by adapting them on the new platform (Hasselblad has by far the shortest lens mounting distance out of all MF cameras that can use 6x4.5 film).... which, (meaning the adapters) fingers crossed will be available soon (but only for leaf shutter lenses if things stay as they are and Hassy doesn't incorporate a focal plane shutter in their future bodies)....
-
H5D-50c is listed for $16,500 - pretty much saying there will be a new releases soon.
A focal plane shutter would be nice, but they're not going to redesign & re-release all their lenses to account for it, so why bother?

I just checked with my shop, getting a H5D-50c Wifi with 28/50/100 would cost about 4000€ less than a IQ150 with 645DF+ and Shneider LS 28/55/110. With the Credo 50 I save 3000€, bringing prices much closer. That's with the old H5D-50c pricing of 21k. If they update their pricing to be closer to the new listing, it's going to be way cheaper.

Too bad you guys don't have a EU store and import taxes would just kill me!

At this stage if you are not in a hurry to buy I would just sit and wait a bit. It will be interesting to see the new Hasselblad pricing and how that may have a knock on effect on others...either way there is a new Hassie coming out which will address all the concerns the 'Other Manufacturer' was using as ammo to sell. Best to compare like with like right ! :-)
-
Agreed! I have to wait anyway for financial reasons, but this year could be interesting.

You are right, Sinar will doubtless release a product for archival and museum use, in due course. :)

An H6D-50c wifi with dual card slots, usb 3.x, and a higher rez screen would check major boxes for me. I just invested in some more HCD glass so will be sticking with the cropped format Hassy for the foreseeable future. I hope they can keep the pricing structure similar to the current 50c wifi pricing, or that at least more rental houses would pick them up. My two local dealers don't even have the H5D-50c wifi in their rental inventory. An H6D-100 would be very welcome as well.
This should definitely be an interesting year for MF and Phase kicked it off with a bang with the IQ3 100. Current pricing on the 645z/H5D-50c wifi/Credo 50 is attractive, but the 645z/H5D-50c are both ~two years old and probably due for a refresh, the Credo 50 is newer but probably due for a refresh as well (althought it just got new life with XF compatibility). Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing what Hasselblad has in store for us in the future re: H series cameras.
-
Too bad you guys don't have a EU store and import taxes would just kill me!
Duty or import taxes would be based on country of origin - Phase One (Denmark) and Hasselblad (Sweden). So buying from the US and importing into EU should not attract import duty, only local VAT.
-
Well, let's hope something new comes out and prices get lower, because by reading only this forum one could be led to assume that medium format has become an exclusive preserve of art institutions and very successful individuals who use Phase One. It is not clear whether this is an effect of pricing, or of 35mmm finally becoming "good enough". However, what makes the situation even harder to read is that there are zillions of old Hasselblad/Imacon, Phase and Sinar tethered backs for sale on ebay around $1K, and an old Mac tower computer configuration to drive these comfortably would be $500 or less. So if medium format tethering is so wonderful, why don't studio shooters buy old trucks (old MF) rather than new cars (new 35mm)? Or are these guys getting the info about old model Hassy filter fungus and legacy firewire arcana, "elsewhere" ? Or are they frightened by the fact that nobody would repair an old back at reasonable cost?
Maybe MF pricing and modularity has really created a chicken and egg problem. Most shooters have never used digital MF and have written it off as too complex, too expensive. In a way, only Leica and Pentax have managed to buck this impression, and they have released very modern understandable cameras that are in fact oversized SLRs.

In EU anything below 1000€ is either a very old Leaf that requires some weird cables, or old Phase One backs that can only be shot tethered. While someone in the studio might be fine with that, they will also end up with something that costs quite a bit as a complete system (back + body + lenses + Mac) and that still has a 24x36mm sensor (or a weird 36x36mm).
Imacon backs start from 1400€ for the back alone in H mount (which means spending 2000€ to 4000€ more for body+lens in good conditions), or a complete V system with a 150mm Sonnar. All Imacon solutions are based on the Imagebank (or can be tethered directly to a Mac), which grounds them in the studio. At least those have sensors bigger than 35mm cameras.
Anything more modern than that, and you're looking at spending something between 4500€ and 8000€ (without going to the various IQ/Credo and H5D stuff), at which point you are much better off paying a bit more and getting something new OR investing all that money in a complete 35mm system with two bodies.
Prices on the used market haven't changed much from last year and they look less and less interesting as very old stuff is being sold at quite high prices. Leica S is even worse than that, as it loses value slowly and the difference between used and new prices isn't that much to even bother. Pentax used is pretty much just the 645D, if you can even find one. But good luck with the lenses.
Then there is the odd Mamiya branded DM or ZD back, which may come in wildly differing prices because some people don't seem to have a clue what the value should be. Oh, and the rarest of them all, a Kodak back! I've only ever seen one and it was gone in a few minutes, but it's not like you have that much choice.
Probably the best of them all has to be finding a good H3D kit. You will be stuck with an old back, but it will have at least a better screen than the H2D or H101 solutions.

Probably because the studios needing them already have them. You would not believe the number of studios shooters who still use old backs.

You are probably not using the right second hand sellers. Prices are significantly lower than 4500€ for H3D-31 or even H3DII-31 (for example) and the first versions of the Leica S (CCD) have gone down quite a bit in price.
Probably the best of them all has to be finding a good H3D kit. You will be stuck with an old back, but it will have at least a better screen than the H2D or H101 solutions.
Actually, the H3D has a small screen with weird colours (it is a 2.2" OLED screen, but they were quite poor at the time). The H3DII has a larger LCD screen, which most people prefer.

I should've made it clear I was talking about the II version, sorry.
As for the price, I'm considering a usable kit (which means accessories, body, batteries, back and lens). If you want a lens other than the 80mm, you have to rise the price a bit.

Yep. That's how I got here. A nice H25 for the equivalent of $US900 with a big 37x49 sensor, a few hundred dollars for a 503Cx and few more for each of my four Zeiss lenses (50/80/120/150).
My 2013 MacBook Air was another $300 and it powers the H25 without a problem as long as I use the USB cable trick. Oh and C1 version 9 is wonderful, and totally free of charge.
The whole lot fits in a relatively small shoulder bag and is a pleasure to use in the field. I carry an external battery just in case, but rarely need it.
Capture Pilot on an iPhone is my chimping device.
Medium format cheap happiness. :)
-
It's all about support as well, my H1 still receives firmware updates from Hasselblad, enabling the new battery etc, and if it really breaks they are super cheap and plentiful or even upgrade to a H2 !!
My Phase One back, as noted above, seems to receive automatic upgrades with each Capture One Release, which cost me nothing.
Cost wise: more than a D500 but less than a D5 ;)

Yes, London Bridge also found a buyer. Doesn't mean it was useful :)

They're referring to Capture One DB, which is only capable of tethering with digital backs, no DSLR's.
Hi,
Capture One Pro, MFD edition is free for Phase One backs.
Best regards
Erik
It supports all Phase One files, not just tethered capture. It also has ALL the features of the paid version, but only for Phase One images.
Gotcha. For the purposes of this, do Leaf images count as Phase One images?
Thanks!

yes
When you select DB during the licence setup it states....
"The full package of Capture One Pro, free to use for Phase One or MamiyaLeaf users only."

Good to know. Thanks!
Sorry for derailing the Hasselblad discussion...

Looking forward to flash sync at 1/2000s ; )

Now that would be nice but somehow I feel that may not be on the list of upgrades for the H6D :-(

I would actually encourage Hasselblad to build a Broncolor RFS 2.1 trigger into the H6 body. It would allow for cleaner use when using a waist level viewfinder. I'd add they need to make a speedlight hotshoe adapter for their system, price it on sale for $100 each, and ideally make it so you can manually control both/either Nikon/Canon lights.
-
Faster sync would require new leaf shutter design (thus new lenses).
I don't know if it's mechanically possible to make one that is accurate and reliable as the current one but at 1/2000, or even big enough to allow the apertures of the current fast lenses. Even if you use new and expensive materials to toughen up the shutter leaves, you'll still need bigger coils for the added speed which will make the lenses slightly bigger (or the shutter smaller, reducing the maximum aperture possible). Lots of compromises have to be made, but maybe they are already working on the next gen lenses that will make this possible.
-
The sync speed can be cheated by using an electronic first curtail shutter, which is what Phase does to get 1/1600th, and even more so if it required f/8 or smaller opening. The biggest hurdle to doing the faster sync speeds is the whole trigger/remote timing, thus the builtin transmitter.
While I'd love a line of cheaper f/5.6 - f/11 glass, there's not enough money to be made to make up for lost revenue from the existing glass.
-

why not? new Phocus, H6D with touch screen and usb3, sync up to 1/2000, 100c and perhaps some new lenses, the list goes on. Hope they will drastically improve the Phocus software.

from my experience even with leaf shutter lenses you start to loose light with shutters faster then 1/500. Significantly so starting at 1/1250s. The issue is the triggerin as mentioned by Joe Tower. Maybe there are solutions, I didn't find one. Also the cable triggering is to slow. I never tryed the V grip from P1.
Of course with HSS you will loose even more light and very uneven in many cases.
-
The solution is to use constant light source. Or wait for another few years till all the lights get shorter flash duration. ;)

Phase One V Grip Air or the Profoto Transmitter built into the Phase One XF can sync at 1/1600th. Most pro lights flash duration is short enough that you either lose no light or only a little light. But some light kits (including a few pro models) are slow enough that you'll lose a couple stops of effective power, simply because not all of the flash has fired by the time the shutter has open and closed.

BTW, the H5D-40 is $8K now, probably your last chance to grab one if you want one...

Nice price...The H5D-40 is not wifi is it?

I think the price keeps dropping for a reason. Probably the dlsr IQ has caught up and makes the h5d40 less relevant?
It would be much better of getting the 50c instead? Once the h6d50c gets announced the h5d50c will continue lowering the price and becomes the entry level?
I see h5d40 has no future proofing. But if that's what you shoot then theres no better time than now to purchase it. ; )
-
The H5D-40 is not wifi-enabled. It is a really nice price and B&H even has (or had) a couple used for even less than $8k. I got an email last week from Hasselblad US saying the H5D-40 sale is "while supplies last". As others have said/conjectured, I'm guessing it is in the process of being discontinued and they are selling off remaining stock. It is still a very nice camera capable of taking very nice images.

Hasselblad will apparently make an announcement on April 7th:

The only thing that would put over the moon is if they resurrect the V system. Or a bolder super exciting move would be the announcement of Hasselblad's purchase of the Hy6 rights and tools! I know, I'm daydreaming or I just still have some leftovers from yesterday news. :)

You forgot the digital X-Pan! :)

Actually I think this cam has slightly more possibilities to come back. It was not my kind of thing then. But nowadays I could consider it. 8)

photorumors.com is also expecting an H6D50, and an H6D100.
something is coming, and a lot of dealers are going to be dumping their H5 demo units.

" a lot" worldwide total may be a lot but these days I call them thin on the ground, in the V days most large cities, UK, had a dealership, unsustainable obviously given the buy in price now but it sure was handy for a dark slide when you sat on one, again.

We are certainly in interesting times again for cameras. Though, interestingly, I have never felt such an urge to hold off buying anything to see how things develop.
-
I think the really interesting time starts ones Sony brings out their 70-80 MP sensor for 35mm which will probably be in the next d800 and Sony a8 or so.

I guess this was my point. Not a good time to rush into buying anything when things are so interesting. There are more and more downing their Medium Format kits for the D810 at the very top level of the industry and a 70-80MP model would put, I think, a nail in the coffin.

Please cite some form of numbers or non anecdotal evidence for this. It's said here often but the only actual evidence in aware of points to a different story.
If you look at Team Phase One revenue - which is public record - it is up year over year since the Great Recession 8 years ago. Nearly every day we hear from someone that is a small format shooter looking to get into medium format for the first time (in addition to those who are upgrading an existing medium format solution).
I'll grant you my point of view will have an inherent bias; I'm more likely to speak to someone moving from small format to medium format than vice versa, but the public sales numbers would seem an objectively fair place to look.
-
Doug,
Glad to hear you are doing well.
We are seeing existing users bleeding away right on this forum. Many of us have an aging back or second-hand MF digital somewhere in the bunch of 10 systems we each own, but it is less and less being viewed as *the* primary kit.
I'd say that for every new shooter who thinks of using MF, there are two older shooters who notice they haven't charged the batteries on their Phamiya for a year. At equipment renewal time, the contrast between the small light $3K A7R2 @ 40MP and the heavyweight $30K XF IQ 250C @ 50MP is stark, whatever the upgrade deal you offer.
Now if you want to tell us that you have *not* being selling systems right and left to museums and institutions and this reflects positively on your bottom line ... :)
Edmund

Doug, FWIW I am a medium format proponent.
Much of my industry (fashion) is downing medium format for the Nikon D810 and more recently 5DS R. I mean people at the very top like Peter Lindeberg, Craig McDean, Glen Luchford, Steven Meisel, to shoot the most lucrative and relatively significant mega brand campaigns such as Gucci, who have always traditionally needed and demanded max IQ. These people are a barometer of the industry and have a further influential effect over the industry.
If you want non anecdotal evidence, go look at something like Interview magazine and read the metadata of images, where it is plain to see that instances of medium format, or anything over, or younger, than a P65 are very rare.
I am not wishing doom on anyone, but I can not personally see how Medium Format Digital can last without some serious innovation/evolution/revolution something of substance beyond marketing and numbers.

I hope the next step will be bellow 60mp. Going higher could compromise the noise levels and dynamic range, unless we have a very significant technological leap.

I will be surprised if they achieve that (new lenses required, posible with high power electronics).
An alternative will be to have native ISO 25.

70-80mp in a FF sensor ehhh...? Definitely last thing I need or any other photographer ever needed...

You would need to upgrade the shutter (not the whole lens) to get the faster speeds.

Really? Seems to me more and more client briefs are looking for video to go with stills.
