You have an app for the security system at your place ?
Maybe turn off or disable that app when not needed ?
Or
you might be able to turn off WIFI in Settings and then turn on when you need to access internet or accessing the security system. Existing connections will come back automatically. If you have to use "find me" sometimes to find your phone, turning off WIFI will make that more difficult.

Either way, notice the strength of the WIFI connection and the CELL connection (LTE ?) as you move around . If either is sitting at one bar, then that will use more battery charge than if both are at 3-4 bars.

Thanks again, degrub, for your continued help!

Going through the process you outlined, the security system shows 69%; WhattsApp 20%; Home & Lock Screen 7%; Settings 3%; Messages 1%.

I don't normally make political messages, but this is something I feel needs to be shared.  Some of the wildest, most amazing landscapes in the western US - 250 million acres of undeveloped public land in America, are proposed to be sold off in the Senate Reconciliation Bill (Bureau of Land Management Land, And National Forest Land) to fund the proposed budget.  Much of this is land with few local residents and few visitors, so it is easily forgotten.  Remote, unrepresented areas are being targeted.  We need to write our representatives to amend this bill and strip out these land sales.

This land is our birthright, and consists of places of full of biodiversity, stunning beauty, indigenous history, deep cultural significance, and fresh air.   It will be rapidly and irreversibly sold off to the rich and companies with deep pockets.  Best case - we are kept off this land or need to pay to access land beyond it.  Worse case - devastating resource extraction (hello Alaska).  Not to mention the roads needed to access this sold property, which will need to go through existing private and public lands, fences that inhibit wildlife movements, access cut off to remaining public land, and pollutants from mined areas flowing into outside watersheds.  Either case - American west changes forever for us and our future generations.

In the United States, public lands are areas of land and water collectively owned by the American public and managed by government agencies. These lands are intended for the use and enjoyment of all citizens and serve various purposes, including conservation, recreation, and resource extraction. They are distinct from private lands, which are owned by individuals or non-governmental organizations.

We need to protect your ability to go hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, backpacking, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, bird watching, RVing, offroading, rock climbing, photographing, surfing, swimming, whitewater rafting, canyoneering, etc.  in the states of Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, and Alaska.   Not to mention lands where cattle grazing has been permitted for decades, established migratory routes, etc.  All sold out from under us.

The battery is healthy. No need to replace. When it starts showing maximum capacity less than 80 %, then consider replacing the battery.

So your issue is usage.

The phone is always contacting the cell tower and any wifi it is linked to. Normally, this does not consume much. That's how Apple and others can claim "one week on a full charge" of usage. The real world is different with the phone trying to connect to weak cell, wifi, bluetooth, etc. If the cell signal is 1 bar, the battery will be used faster.  So maybe sit at a table with a window looking straight at the cell antenna  :D ;)

There can also be apps that are active even when phone is not being used.

If you scroll down further on the Settings, Battery page, you will see  a list of apps from highest usage to lowest. So if this was a recent change in battery usage, look for a new app or updated app on that list with a high usage. For example, when i play Solitaire on my phone, it consumed 86 % of all battery usage. My battery will go from 85 % charge to 40 % charge in a couple hour session of Solitaire.

Also, to keep the battery as healthy as possible, only use an Apple charger and cable or one that is certified by Apple. Anything else, many times, will not regulate the charging rate very well if at all. For example, i have a car charger, that will charge my phone in 10-20 minutes from about 30% to 100%. My Apple charger takes more than an hour.  Using quick charging or poorly regulated charging will degrade the battery over time. Best time to use it is to charge between 30 and 80 % charge, if you use it at all.

In general, avoid letting the battery get below 10-20% and more than 90% charged. Going below or above, can reduce the lifetime of the battery by up to 10 % according to Apple. Going below 10% charge is likely to shorten the battery life significantly if done repeatedly. The upcoming IOS software is said to implement further charging optimizations and controls to extend battery life as much as possible.

Your battery does not benefit from charging over 86 %. You may get a little bit of usage out of it by charging above that, but it is degrading the battery faster to do so.

Look in Settings, Battery, Battery Health : Maximum Capacity . Reply with the % it indicates.

You may have been in a weak signal area for cell or were on wifi and had wifi signal issues. Bluetooth will also drain a battery, but a bit slower in my experience.  Both wifi and cell will run a battery down quickly.  You can change a setting on the Settings, Battery  page to Turn ON Low Power Mode which will help extend your battery usage time on a single charge. It also turns off the screen very quickly.

If you need to replace the battery, and that phone is still on the Apple support list, an Apple battery will be available. Should be, according to US Apple website,  about 89 USD equivalent in Euros.  Battery should be good for at least 2 years . If not on the Apple support list, then a generic battery replacement should be around 50-70 USD equivalent and would be expected to last at least a year, maybe,,repeat, maybe up to 2 years. The Apple batteries are expected to give about 3000 full charge cycles from new. Takes 1-2 days at Apple store when in stock. Maybe same day if not busy. If using a 3rd party, make sure they are an official Apple certified repair shop.

EDIT - best i can tell it is still supported so an Apple battery should be available.

Maximum Capacity: 86%

Last night, midnight: 56%

This morning, 9a.m. : 48% (Not used between these readings)

I put it back on charge, and, at 10.30a.m. : 100%.

I’ll leave it alone until later (waiting for a plumber to call!) and see if it might have been something I did or just a freak experience. I can’t understand why it says it can now only do 86%, yet still indicated that it had received 100% charge. Maybe that means 100% of 86%…

Thanks for your help; much appreciated.

Rob
