It's a mess! I pointed out on the ColorSync list that 1.3.1 was released three years ago, today we get 1.6.1. The new Patch Viewer is a UI mess with bugs like color patches that don't appear in color, no ability to appended loaded targets, and apparently Windows users can't download the product. This is a weak beta release at best. Another embarrassment from X-rite Engineering and QA. At least they fixed the HASP software that crashed every 5 seconds on Mac.

Andrew - it's quite weird, but I can't see any trace of the above mentioned issues... Out of curiosity, I even downloaded the Windows version as well...

The Windows download issue was reported on the ColorSync list. Maybe X-rite fixed this since?
Sorry, the UI bugs are in the new Target Editor, not Patch Viewer.

Load a target of a couple hundred patches. Some appear showing the color on the left hand side of the UI, many do not. You can load but not append more data, if you want to add a patch, it's one at a time. The UI on my Mac is filled with graphics that are not fully drawn (Red, Green, Blue). The asset area always defaults to closed and isn't stickly like the other modules. You must open them every time you visit the module. It takes forever to load patches. Click on a patch where no color appears on the left, press the Up or Down button, the color appears out of nowhere. You can delete a patch but you better want to, no undo. You can click on a column and it highlights some area, not others depending on which you pick, the action of the buttons has no effect either way so what's going on? Select patch 1, click on the Up button, that button grays out. Now pick another patch, still grayed out. I can go on and on, this is a beta of a release if that based on just this mess of a new module.

Windows users can't download the product.
No problems with that here.

Still looking around at it to see what's new. As ever zilch documentation that I've found yet.

In Profile>Measurement workflow, double click on a patch, you'll see the new UI of info seen in the first post.
New Patch Viewer, comments about it's sickly GUI.

Yes, found all that courtesy of the read me thanks, but things like the 'Measure Chart' are totally cryptic.

Using the Windows 1.6.1 version here.

I also noted that the amount of paper has been reduced in the newest version.  Default of my older was 4 pages of patches on 8.5x11 inch paper.  New one is only two pages (Default was Medium) of 800 patches.  The Higher amount was only 3 pages.  No selection on the number of patches or the size as with the older one.  The old one made around 2,000 patches I think on four pages by default (I usually pulled it down to 1,100 or so to fit into 2 pages as I hate scanning 2,000 of the things.

Also, the diagnostics software has also been updated.  Couldn't find my i1 head at first, but seems fixed with the update.

Test and verify. On the ColorSync list, Terry Wyse wrote:  ran into a few custom charts that I formatted for the i1iO2 that when opened in the test chart module are no longer the correct format…..patch size is not preserved from the original file making the chart useless.

Nothing has changed other than the default, so as patch sizes remain the same, for a given number of patches you'll still need the same amount of paper.

They still haven't allowed the creation of small charts for profiling event printers at 6" x 4"

I just used it (Version 1.6.1) yesterday in profiling and it only took two pages in the three selections it now presents in the Medium (Its default.) over the older version which took 4 pages which was tiresome and slow to scan on the tray.  Less number of rows too.  New patch set was 800 and the older was around 2,000 by default setting of Medium (Small is one age.  Medium (default) is two pages.  Large is three pages.).  Patch size is 0.315" x 0.315" by default and can be adjusted in Patch Layout.  I used the manual scanner plate of the i1 PhotoPro 2 in Windows 8.1-64, fwiw.  The old patch set may have been be more rectangular (taller?) than the two new patch sheets I made as these new ones appear more squarish (I threw out all the old ones since rebuilding with the new version so I can't compare to the old.).

The gamut is still the hideous x-rite "same-color" wireframe for comparison once the profile is made.  That wireframe needs to be in the full-color gamut for the L*ab color wireframe display, imho, and not the same color of green, blue, or red for comparisons between profiles.  The new icc profile with the i1 PhotoPro 2 was 'slightly' larger than my old one made with the ColorMunki too when I checked in their wireframe comparison.  Probably not something anyone would notice to be substantial though.

I agree that a small paper size of 4x6 inches would be nice for the small portable printers as I have one of those too.  Smallest size is A5 (5.8" x 8.3").  I should contact them and ask about that as well as the one-color wireframe thing.

Has anyone got any further updates to this new version?

Does it work any better than the previous version on Windows?

The previous patch size default was 7.0mm x 9.0 mm (width x height).  The new default patch size is 8.0mm x 8.0mm so the default patches are now square.  When you start a new workflow with an existing Test Chart, you get a popup which warns you that the patch layout will change.  In my case using my typical 2033 patch target, I have more rows per page but fewer columns, but still 4 pages in total.

Why on earth would they have a taller patch as the old default considering how instruments that scan read the patches? I'd consider this a bug or design fix. And smaller is often not better but worse depending on the output device and instrument so again, be careful and test.

Is the previous patch size still possible?  I am contemplating missing this release.

Just uninstall if you have the latest version, download an older version and use it. I am still on V1.3.2, after discovering problems with the color engine since the V1.5.X release. I've written long emails to X-rite over several months last year, and while I did eventually receive some useful replies, I have more or less given up hope on the new software releases. I don't have the time right now to go remind them about bugs in their color engine which was working quite well some years ago.
