Wide angle zoom lens for 20D (under 28mm)
« on: January 28, 2006, 11:22:46 pm »

Hello all!
So, I am planning on buying a 20D. Just have to fill in the gap under the 28 mm range as I have a 28-105 lens. What lens would you suggest me, the one with the best money/value you can think of? The EF 10-22 is sparkling, but wont work on full frame and film, the Sigma 10-20 might be problematic and the EF 17-40 is good but cover little of the UWA...Some one has an idea of another lens?
Thanks

Do you really care if your ultra wide lens is usable with film?  A 20mm prime would work pretty well for a wide lens on a film body.  The 10-20 range is really something one buys to cope with their crop factor camera.

I'd get the 17-40 and worry about covering anything wider than that if it proves to be a problem.  Or shoot the really wide shots on film.

I went with the 12-24 tokina.  But as mentioned in another thread it wasn't like I put any thought into it.  (Other than I had heard that it was decent and that the tamron 11-18 wasn't.  Not sure how it stacks up to the 10-22 or the sigma equiv.)

I'd buy the 10-22 and enjoy it NOW. If and when I'd go FF, I'd simply sell it.

That's an interesting and revealing review of the 10-22mm by Bob Atkins, if you read between the lines.

Bob gives the impression this lens is equally sharp in the centre from f3.5 to f22, with just a slight increase in sharpness when stopping down to f4 and then f5.6.

However, it beats me how this lens can be considered sharp at f22. Well, it doesn't quite beat me   . If it's as sharp at f22 as it is at f5.6 or f8, then it's clearly a soft lens, considering that the 20D is Canon's highest resolving dslr and also considering that smaller formats perform worse at large f/stops.

I don't see any other explanation for this lens being sharp (a relative term) at f22. Maybe someone can help me out here.

If you want to use it on full frame it looks like the sigma 12-24 is okay.
