The introspective gaze is awesome, in this case I'd crop even more to get all the attention to that right (left) eye, the light spot on the right next to its head is distracting, it does look like you were dangerously close to this giant though. The limited dof is not working for me, but hardly a subject to do a focusstack on I guess  ;D
Best Regards, Sander

Sander, thanks for your input - I will be fascinated to see what others have to say.

I would crop it much close and maybe use a square aspect ratio. Other than that, it's terrific.

Experimental - yes - and well-conceived. There is just enough of the rhino to tell us what it is, but the close-up takes me off-guard for a moment as my brain sorts out what I'm looking at - which is why I like it.

The yellow cast seems like an unnecessary distraction, but certainly adds to the mystery of the photograph.

Closer cropping would help to focus the viewer - 4:3 or 1:1 - take off most of the right blackness.

Thanks for sharing!

At first glance I thought it was a closeup of part of a tree trunk. It took a couple of seconds to parse the image correctly.
To me, the color seems to impart a kind of Hieronymous Bosch look to it, which fits the Rhino very well.
Good experiment.

Thank you everyone for your comments - much appreciated!

The yellow cast present was just the setting sun about a minute or two from sunset.
I will experiment with a different crop and possibly repost the result.

I'd consider a crop where everything is in focus. For me the out of focus parts are distracting.

Excellent, Tony. I like how this light makes everything different and fresh.
