A cool little spot about a half hour away outside of Zion NP in Utah.

Nice subject and location. It would require a diferent light direction to really show the colour and texture of the rocks?

I've often the problem when I shoot very late.

What to do?

Give the viewer what I really saw even if it was dark, or lighten the image (to obtain a good histogram), or something in between?!

Sometimes, it's difficult to have the best compromise.

I like the shot a lot.
It should be possible to lighten it up a bit while still preserving the dark feeling of waning light.  Your call...

Either lighten it or don't post? The problem is that you know something is under exposed and you anticipate it will be criticised then why post and risk that some people will think that you are lacking in competence? This isn't aimed at you personally. You have to try and second guess the viewer's reaction which is difficult, or impossible, if someone is going to criticise for the sake of it.

The problem with the image isn't that the foreground is underexposed - which it is - but the sky is also underexposed. If the sky was lightened then the image would be more balanced. If that doesn't work then it is possible to isolate the foreground and lighten it and apply a grad in post and lighten the foreground where it meets the trees whilst keeping the bottom of the foreground darker. All in all a tricky image to balance out.

Thanks for the all input. The image doesn't appear too dark on my Mac, but I understand that the sky is probably underexposed.  Here's a reworked version. I hope it satisfies most of the processing tastes of the community :)

I agree, the new version is much better, the sky becomes very luminous.

I'd consider isolating the reflection and adjusting it to match the sky (increased color balance, vibrancy, or highlight adjustment) as they appear to be slightly unbalanced (in the new image).

They would be unbalanced because the water is darker than the sky?
