Raw histogram to become available for recent Nikon FF DSLRs?

That's my take as well.  I'm wondering how they calculate 3 years.  From date of camera introduction, date of consumer purchase or some other manner.

Most probably 3 years from camera market availability.

This is still just a rumor at this stage, but it seems to be a pretty credible one.

The key one is of course RAW histogram.

This would probably be one of the most significant firmware upgrades ever if true.

Maybe the rumor is too good go be true. It is now Jan 19 and there does not appear to be any announcement.

Unfortunately not. That download is to correct some minor problems with the D810 and does not appear to offer a raw histogram. Since I have the D800e, not the 810, I didn't download it. The promised update with raw histograms was said to apply to FX cameras released within the past 3 years.

Yeah, like Nikon is ever going to provide firmware updates for any but its latest cameras....  I've got a bridge in mint condition....

No.  The firmware update program "I am Advancing" was supposed to start 19 January 2015.  I have yet to see an official announcement and the website has not been activated.

Maybe it was a hoax since they released a new version of VeiwNX2 but nothing in the way of firmware.

Two weeks ago I posted online a leaked Nikon USA press release about a new “I AM ADVANCING” program for Nikon DSLR owners where photographers will be able to download advanced firmware updates and add new functionality to their cameras. The official announcement was supposed to be on January 19th but it did not happen. Here are the reasons why I think the press release is legit:

Nikon 66.11.133.41 IP address

The leaked text was obviously received from an email with an IP address (66.11.133.41) that can be geo-traced to the Nikon office in Melville, NY. The email server is also listed as srvmailbox1.nikonimaging.net.
The content and length of the press release is consistent with previous Nikon announcements. I seriously doubt that this was a hoax created by a prankster. Over the past 8 years I have seen many fake press releases and this is not one of them.
The people quoted in the press release (Kazuyuki Kazami and Jay Vannatter) are real Nikon employees.

I think the press release was real and for some reasons Nikon decided not to publicly announce it or possibly delay it till the CP+ show in February. On Tuesday Nikon released the official D750 service advisory and maybe they thought that any other "positive" announcement on the same day will not be perceived well. We may never know, but I still believe we will see the new firmware program in the next few weeks.

Of course, none of this matters until there is an official announcement and actual downloadable updates! 

It is my sincere hope that this will come to fruition and, more importantly, Nikon sees the software side as a ripe area of differentiation for their products.  That will have positive benefits for all brands as they try to compete.  Having worked in military systems, I can tell you that once the processing capabilities went up and power requirements for that capability went down, it made all the difference in both what could be achieved.

How many of us have focus tools on our phones?  Why?  The camera already knows the aperture and focal length of lens and can determine the focus distance.  It should be reporting Hyperfocal distance and DOF.  There are tons of way software capability can improve how we use our equipment.
