Sigma Quattro DP2- new viewfinder attachment
« on: January 05, 2015, 03:24:31 pm »

About the Sigma DP Quattro :
Has anyone tried the new dedicated view finder attachment ? ( LVF- 01.)
Curious to know how it fits onto the camera, how well you can see the cameras LCD, and if it's comfortable for viewing.
Thanks,
Richard

I don't think it is available yet, at least not that I have heard.

Six days later, the LVF-01 seems to now be available at:  sigmaphoto.com  .

I have not yet burdened my credit card with the $230 required, but would be glad if one of you would like to and report back.

Issues with highlight recovery - they clip the highlights very easily indeed -  and the false colour in-fill between backlit tree branches with the Quattros have compelled me to revert to using the Merrills, which suffer from neither of these issues.

It is all very, very disappointing.

With the new VF attachment the quattro is sexy. But... as you said (and many other said) the Quattro is not up to the Merrill quality, even if some peps try to prove the contrary by wasting hours in PP and denoisers and sharpener or whatever. I do not count the funny denial propaganda of some illuminati over DPr...

Sigma should listen really hard around this part. If the upcoming DP3Q and SDQ produce such grainy noise at base ISO (which is freaking ugly, disappointing and gruesome) this experience will be a total fail (it is already a fail), period.

Sigma won a lot of passionate photographers among the years with the DP line, the pinnacle was and still is the Merrill series.  Now they lose clients, lost their international evangelists and, above all, lost credibility by a large margin (because yes, a lot of Merrill users are professionals or even MF users and when they see a poop on the floor... they know by fact it is a poop on the floor).

Why waste your money ?
You can get an equally effective one from Kamerar for less than half the price.

Quentin-
I just dial down the exposure comp quite a bit to make sure I do not blow out the highlights. X3F fill light seems to work just fine from there
to recover shadow detail.
The other artifact is more troublesome.
Have you tried the DP2Q in B/W ?

As I have pointed out before, a Hoodman (or equivalent knockoff) and two large rubber bands work very well on the Merrills.

I used to use the Hoodman but found the Kamerar about the same cost, made better, and more versatile.

Hi The

Not tried in B&W as yet.  Maybe I should.

Noted about dialing down exposure - but that just increases shadow noise.  And my goodness, the noise......

Too many issues, too many alternatives to waste more of my time - Merrills being the most obvious.  The Merrills occupy the sweet spot.  I know their limitations and I can work around them.  The Quattros are a car crash in comparison (and initially I was favourably disposed towards them - I wanted them to be a step forward, not the ugly sister.  I was wrong).

I've ordered a couple of fast M-mount primes to use on my A7r.  I get the first one tomorrow - a Leica Summilux 75mm F1.4.

Good luck w that Quentin. So far I use a Zeiss 55,and a Samyang 14.
I cannot afford Leica glass.
Waiting for the new FE 28 w adapter, or to see the new Sigma 24.
Also going to have a whole slew of new hi-MP mirrorless offerings
to look at.
Doubt I afford those though. I can just drool like I do w your Aston.

And so you should be.  Any true Aston fan know the DB series are the only true Astons  ;D

Cmon The Ute ! You can't compare an English hand-crafted master piece of automotive with ... this !

@ Quentin : Your a lucky Sir. I would have liked to own such a marvel but I would be too afraid nor have the infrastructure to drive it in peace :) Anyway I'm concentrating on another well crafted British products ;)
