Price?

And how does it compare to the NEC counterpart which will sell for $3199 at B&H? In the past, NEC has offered a better value. The 4K screens offer sumptuous viewing, but ones's prints will be no better than with current wide gamut monitors. I would spend my money elsewhere.

So true. From what I read around the web, this idea of 4K appears to many to be so appealing but why the “want bumps”? IOW, I’d take a standard resolution SpectraView or similar reference display system than a 4K that can’t produce the kind of color control I need to make multiple printing output match my display. Now 4K AND a reference display architecture without paying through the nose (because it’s ‘new’), I’m OK with that.

I’ve got a Retina display and can’t see anything at it’s max resolution (too tiny). More isn’t always better or necessary.

Precisely.  I think the killer application for 4K monitors is as a very-high-dynamic-range display medium, hanging on a wall.

I agree! But it will likely be a 4K TV, much larger.
I have a client I recently worked with that is doing just that. He’s got an 84”4K that he drives from a new MacPro. The slide show he had me view was stunning. It almost made be believe in the ‘print is dead’ motto we hear. It was immersive, just stunning.

Yes, 4K screen are great for display and questionable for editing. This being said, I now use a 4k LG screen as second monitor for thumbnail navigation, PS palettes,... and that makes some sense.

For display purpose, 55inch class 4K screens, especially from Sharp, are impressive. Waiting till 8k may be better though.

Cheers,
Bernard

You might be waiting quite a while for an 8k screen......

Personally, I am in complete agreement with Dog. Wide Gamut Spectraview is everything I need for making prints and its here now.  ;D

I'll upgrade to the new 4k SpectraView some time next year because its nice to have - not because I really need it. Its just nicer to look at  - we can have our cake and eat it too!  ;D

We never really needed better, wider gamut, larger, higher resolution displays - they're simply more convenient ;)
