DNG Recover Edges
« on: December 19, 2005, 01:06:56 am »

I recently tested the DNG Recover Edges utility from the recent article.
For my Digital Rebel (6.3 mp) raw files, I can recover 53.1 thousand edge pixels.

For everyone that tries this utility: what's your model, and how many pixels did you recover?

I'm very curious!

With the Canon 20D, it is reporting a recovery of 84.3 thousand edge pixels.

I am interested to know from those that have tried this tool if the pixels recovered have usable data? I have not had the oppertunity to try this out yet.

Maybe the manufacturers "clip" the edge pixels because of sensor mounting tollerances.

What has been your experiences with this?

Can anyone think of reasons why the edge pixels would be hidden in the Raw files?

Yes, they are usable in most cases. Manufacturer crop "border" pixels because Bayer demosaicing can give non-optimal results on these pixels.
