T/S-E 24mm How to focus?
« on: December 14, 2005, 05:24:42 am »

I am proud owner of a Canon T/S-E 24mm lens but having difficulty with focus in tilt-mode. Reason can be my bad eyes, the small and dark viewfinder in my 20D or wrong technique. Could you kindly state your way of focusing in tilt-mode? Do I first focus on the nearest subject or on the farthest?

Gerald,
You can consult [a href=\"http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=191&hl=tilt]this thread[/url] in the discussions.
Additionally, there's some info here.

You need to focus in little steps. First, focus in the center of the range, the mid point of what you want in focos. This give yourself a little tilt. Then refocus. Tilt some more. Focus again. Each time you refocus, check your depth of field. Keep repeating the process, focusing, adjusting tilt, focusing again, checking depth of field.

It can take a while to get the shot set up the way you want. And remember, it may not be possible to get everything in focus that you want in focus. There are limits to what the lens can do.

The important thing is to take your time. You can do amazing things with these lenses.

First keep in mind that wide angle lenses require far less tilt to adjust PoF than longer lenses do, so with the 24 you usually will only use a degree or two of tilt unless you are focused very close to your subject.  Without getting too long-winded, start by simply focusing the center of your frame approximately 1/3 of the way between the closest point you want in focus and the farthest point you want in focus then crank in a degree or three of tilt until those close and far points pop into focus.  At this point you will be very close, but probably not perfect, so a few very slight touch up changes to focus and tilt as described above may be in order.
