The Times They Are A Changin
« on: October 31, 2014, 07:46:59 pm »

This is at Cumberland Falls State Park in Kentucky. I was there a few days ago to capture a waterfall nearby. The diffused light was perfect for the falls but the river scene was not good. I drove the 2hrs yesterday when we had all this fog. It was a perfect day.

Pretty capture Walt but it sure does look "dank" as my father used to say. Isn't Cumberland Falls the one that has a moonbow certain times of the year?

Later,

Absolutely stunning.  A lovely, moody image.  Well done.

Very nice. I like the repetition of lines on water and rock, among other things.

Wonderful atmosphere and movement. The log on the bottom right is somewhat distracting. Otherwise, I have no suggestions.

In Scotland they would call it dreecht. Imo, a little more contrast but as it is.... a fine image. :)

Thank you all for commenting. I really appreciate it. As the morning progressed, and the fog lifted, I got plenty of bright fall colors and blue skies. I only take them to please the art fair crowds. To please myself, I guess I'm a "dank" "dreecht" kinda of guy. I really do like darker, moodier shots.

oops, checking in late..great image Walt, Dank or Dreecht, over here in the southeast of the Netherlands we'd call that "Diezig". It is certainly a mood I prefer and try to catch where possible. I'd just have one very minor question about this here image: would a slightly longer exposure have done something more for the water part ? I'd be more than happy however to shoot something like this anyday.

Regards, Sander

Thank you Sander,

Yeah, I would have liked to have exposed longer, but unfortunately I was at my lowest iso and at f22. I am weak in the area of filters. I guess it's time to get a few ND filters and maybe the big stopper.

Walt, I love this image.  Absolutely love it.   I don't know much about the art fair market, but is there really that much less of a market for an image like this vs. a more typical blue skies/bright foliage shot?

Thank you James, Here in Kentucky the Art Fairs are unpredictable. There are those who appreciate quality photography and would love this image. But then there are those who come for the kettle corn and a cheap day outdoors. Those are the ones who want something bright and colorful.
I have been doing the art fairs for 4 years now and am trying to appeal to a broader section of people. Shoot for myself and shoot for what others want. I'll see how it goes.

Subtle tones and light, really work well. I like the way the eye is driven towards the fog, adding to the sense of mystery, as if one would be going "up river".

I have looked at this image a number of times and will continue to look at it. Evocative, painterly have been used. All I have to add is that I would be proud to hang it in my home.

Best Regards,
Dale

If you'll forgive the pun, it has a lovely watercolour feel to it. I like it!!
