The Bird is Back
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:30:15 am »

Great Blue Heron on a fishing expedition. These birds are clever, fast and ruthless hunters. While I did not get to see the ensuing great swallowing act as he flew away to avoid a thieving neighborhood Heron bully, this size fish is easily swallowed whole by these guys.

I like them all but the second one is my favorite (The Hit). One can see the eyes of the captured fish, it adds a good deal of drama.

Well done!

Very nice! GBHs are fun to watch and to photo. Plus, if you just sit there not doing a thing near a good hunting area with GBH nearby, eventually they may come close and you can get great shots. They are not particularly timid as long as you are quiet. I once watched a GBH grab 6 sunfish in 8 tries over an hour - pretty efficient. Better hit rate than my BIF photography  ;)

Great sequence, Chris. Are you planning a book on your neighborhood herons? You seem to be finding lots of good material.

Great series!

But I am betting he didn't get this mullet down his gullet. I have seen more than once Great Blue's take fish they can't get down.

Later Larry

A remarkable sequence of shots and it tells a nice story. You must have been a happy man when you clicked the shutter?

I am generally a happy man whenever I snap the shutter...it's just that happiness doesn't always translate into a great shot.  ;D
